Yes, lets get all of them out! Its time to start new. Unfortunately for
President, I dont like either candidate. I guess we can start with the Congress
and hopefully we can get an Independant in office soon as Pres. The two party
system is destroying our country.

Cannon was the better one of the two. What a shame on the people of the 3rd district in Utah. Maybe the Utah stereotypes do have some truths to it.
In the general election the democrats will win. I hope they win the senate and house too. I'm a republican and I'm very disappointed.

Good move, repulicorps, but really you are just trading one dogmatic
conservative for another. Members of political parties are so tied to their
dogma that they can't see problems that will bite them in the nose and
therefore can't find solutions to them.
For eight years we've had a republicorp president who, at the start of his term (until 2004), had majorities in congress. Look at the results: two wars, trillions of dollars spent, from surplus to record deficits, millions of manufacturing jobs lost, inflation way out of control (despite official numbers), millions of illegal aliens, no border control, tax cuts for Bill Gates and Warren Buffet, 1 in 6 Americans waiting for bankruptcy due to inability to pay for a hospital stay, this list could go on and on... Why do you support this party? Abortion seems to be the only issue you care about. It remains legal. Apparently no one is going to change that. Now, on the other hand, being objective, I experienced great prosperity under Bill Clinton (notwithstanding his moral flaws). I got the two best tax incentives I've ever got (tuition and child tax credit), and we had surpluses. What am I missing here?

You know I think this primary is very telling about where the nation is at.
American, at least for right now, values style over substance. We really
don�t care who you are or what you really stand for we just
want someone who can give a good speech. So enjoy 3rd District
you�ve got your orator. Too bad I think you will find that
he doesn�t really represent your values or ideals. As for
his influence I give him 1 or 2 speeches really this session before the rest of
the house blows him off as just a hot-head. So good luck Jason, as a freshman
congressman from Utah, in your fight to dissolve the Department of Education,
single handedly fixing immigration, and all the other things
you�ve promised you�ll do that you
have no chance of doing. Also enjoy it in two years when people attack you for
your inabilities, it will be laughable to hear you say that
you�ve only had 2 years to work and you need more time to
build the influence you need to get those things done.

The normally-reliable pollster Dan Jones sure blew the call on this race. He had
Cannon up by four with a week to go. In May, he had Cannon up by two.
The 20-point margin of victory was far outside the margin of error for the June poll. This was more than an election - it was an uprising. And polls don't capture that type of development.
All lawmakers should take heed.

It wasn't ANY of you. It was angry anti-incumbent voter sentiment. Many of us who voted aren't anti-immigration, either; we are just fed up with a do-nothing Congress, with the status quo in Washington, and with the way this country is headed. We just want a reasonable person to bring change.

Good one.. Joe Cannon isn't the Publisher.. man.. read the contact page. I
don't care if they are related.. Cannon didn't come out smelling like
a rose.. I'm just glad the DNews didn't gloss it over. The article
sure doesn't read like a thank you letter from the editor to his brother.
Chris Cannon has gotten lambasted in the comments.. you don't see them
getting censored.. So Mark.. is the paper biased now? Read the comments. I think
those of us living in Utah County who disliked Chris Cannon feel good this
morning and are now celebrating and the DNews is letting us be heard.

I've known Jason for a long time. He is bright, hardworking, and honest.
I trust him.
Because of the re-districting, I could not vote for him yesterday.
I've had many dealings with Mr. Cannon. All I can say is I'm very pleased that Jason won the primary. Continued hard work by his team is important. I was very impressed with Jason this morning on the Doug Wright show on KSL. He kept saying "We" and "Our". Great job Mr. Chaffetz and team.

To whatever extent that is true, he used his influence for negative purposes.

This guy was a college democrat who has become whoever he feels he needs to to
gain power. He was a categorical failure in the governor's office. Everyone
knows that. He says anything, becomes anything and will do anything to gain
power. The republicans in this state are really struggling (I am one) and the

One other paper labeled Chavetz no different that Cannon. I haven't seen
enough difference between Cannon and Chavetz so I'm supporting Bennion
Spencer for Congress.

Sorry, lance sjorgren, I�m not a Cannon Staffer. Just a
software engineer who did his homework as a delegate and tried to look not just
at what Chaffetz was saying but who he really was and what his values were. I
personally found him wanting. It was just too hard to tell when he was saying
truth and when he was twisting things for his benefit. So I supported Cannon,
because I found he was true to his word. Maybe if you actually tried to
understand the issues you would have seen this too.

There is an enormous alumni of folks who have worked for Cannon. Very few had a
positive experience. He is a very odd person. Downright strange.
Manipulative. Conspiratorial. Flits from issue to issue. Believes he is truly
important when most of his colleagues think he is plain nutty. And, he was
downright mean to his staff, often pitting one against the other.
This all said, he was pretty classy today on Doug Wright's show. He'll figure something else to do. And, he'll be pretty upbeat about it. I actually feel a bit sorry for him today. I hope he finds a path that works for him and his family.

This is a big victory for everyone who is fed up with the same old promise one

immigration and sign on to the SAVE act he needs to go too.

I agree with Jason. Let's rid the congress of Hatch, Bennett, Bishop and
Matheson. Let's get fresh, new blood, new ideas to help us all out. I
firmly believe that there should be term limits met by congress. Kennedy has
been there forever, and even though he was effective, I do believe we could all
use a change. Not just in congress, let's clean all the houses!

I never worked for Cannon, but I have worked for a Congressman before, and I
have known quite a few former Cannon staffers, and it is nonsense to say that
most of them had bad experiences. Most of them I knew actually liked the guy.
Maybe it's like my Mom says - "there's no accounting for some
people's taste" - but he can't be all that bad if most of his
staff liked him (unless you're so blinded by political hatred that you
think that everyone who liked Cannon was just fooled or naive).
For example, my own experiences with Jason Chaffetz tell me that he is extremely dishonest in his campaigning, and that he is a bit of an opportunist. I also don't believe I have any idea what his real beliefs are. However, I have no problem accepting that his family and close friends see many good things about him that I don't. I am also sure that many of his supporters have rational reasons for voting for him. I won't, but I not a foaming-at-the-mouth partisan, so I can accept that there is a good side to him that I just don't know.

Maybe the real problem is that you have to have such seniority to have much

I didn't vote FOR Jason Chaffetz. I voted AGAINST Chris Cannon. I know
Chris personally and have been to his home. He's a very nice guy that is a
disaster as a politician. Chaffetz may be no better, but getting rid of the
status quo is a good thing when the country is so far off course.

It's interesting to me that the issue of Chris Cannon's brother's
position has arisen. Not the first time something like this happens, however.
Jim Kolbe, our many, many times Representative in Congress from my district in
Arizona also has a brother--who was editor of the Arizona Republic--good brother
kept Jim's sexual orientation from ever being mentioned--until the gay
movement brought him out of the closet when opinions had changed enough that
they didn't figure it would hurt him. I knew party workers whose lives
were threatened earlier if they let the info slip--friend of ours thought the
electorate had a right to know--he shut up quick when his family was threatened.
Best kept secret in AZ for years--meanwhile, groups of gay activists led the
fight against a conservative governor--helped by "liberal" republicans
who later were tried for major illegal financial acts. The governor was
exonerated--too late. Lots of stuff gets covered up in politics--and much of it
shouldn't.

The 60-40 victory for Chaffetz is nearly IDENTICAL to the numbers at the state
convention. Cannon and his staff tried to make it seem like just a bunch of
"overzealous" "uneducated" convention delegates. Sorry
Cannon! I don't like the idea of Chaffetz in Congress, but we need a GREAT
overhaul of the state and federal legislatures, and in Utah that means
exchanging one republican for another because democrats arent a viable option in
a district that includes utah county.

Truly another politition who is in it for himself. How 'bout those gas
prices and our economy going to pot...all this has happened while you were in
office. I think just about anybody could have run against Cannon and won.

It was Chris Cannon's election to loose and he did his best to make sure he
did. From his unpopular stance on illegal immigration to his frequent misteps
when speaking to the public. To be honest in talking to my neighbors most
didn't vote for Mr Chaffetz, they were voting against Chris Cannon. I think
Mr Chaffetz had better realize it and try to represent this district rather than
represent himself.

I have been working for this for 4years now. I actually think the Church should
call Mr. Cannon on a mission like they did Wayne Owens after he lost to Sen
Garn. Since Mr. Cannon was so concerned with the illegal aliens from Mexico and
So. America, perhaps that would be a good place to send him. Just a thought.

Reps, the same can be said of Rep Rob Bishop. Hopefully if Jason Chaffetz is elected in November he will go back to Washington and listen and learn the system and then really put forth a work ethic that will set him apart from his fellow freshman legislators. Utah really needs a statesman in Washington and not just another politician. Senator Hatch has had a distinguished career in the Senate and is highly respected by his peers. Utah's representatives in the House have done little for the people of Utah whom they represent. They have enjoyed the perks and salary and yet have not been leaders or sponsors of significant legislation. With the Democrats likely to remain in power, it might be time to serious consider sending qualified and capable Democrats to Washington where they will have more of voice in a Democrat controlled House of Representatives. Or if not, lets send some different Republicans that will really do some work.
