Newly split Jordan districts select school board members

Tracy Cowdell, currently a member of the JSD Board on the east side, also retained his seat.

I hope the new boards of the two new districts will exercise prudence and collegiality in attending to the job they face. Many interlocal agreements will need to be structured in the next year to insure our students have access to the programs they are counting on. I wish all of them the best in this endeavor.

Congrats to the newly elected. They have a major job ahead of them - and a lot of elbow grease will be needed!

An attitude off cooperation within the new boards and with the existing JSD board and the other new district board will go a long way to making that job easier.

With twenty-seven percent of the smallest voter turnout in years, can one expect much? These guys and gals do not have to listen to the voters because the voters didn't care to vote.

So much for the public wanting to be more involved and wanting a say in their child's education. I guess parents don't want to be as involved as they said they did -- yesterday showed that. Their chance to truly be heard was yesterday -- in the voting booth!

Since the old school board members will serve on two school boards at the same time, does that mean they will get paid twice? That doesn't seem right to me.

It was absolutely ludicrous to schedule the school board elections during the primary elections in June, rather than during the general elections in November. However, this does not excuse the low voter turnout. If you can't be bothered to go to the polls, don't start complaining about school board policies next year.

I think the school board elections were intentionally scheduled in June. Senator Carlene Walker wrote the bill that way, knowing full well there would be low voter turnout during a primary election. That way, the vocal minority on the east side could get elected by a few of their friends and relatives.

County clerk quit publishing the precise turnout per district, but if you look at the votes actually cast Jordan East had 2-3 times the turnout as the county in general. Not bad for June...

@Paid Twice - well if they're doing twice the work (a gross underestimate given start-up requirements for any organization) I don't have a problem with it. They'll be doing a lot more than their getting paid for....!

@Z - not at all - June was the first reasonable election to run with. If you wait until November you WASTE precious time in getting things going and making the transition as smooth as possible. If you truely beleive the only time you can have an election is Nov, then you don't understand the time it takes to do things.
