would have been to develop both at the same time. Otherwise they wouldn't be perceived as being what they are. Yet being what they are, they wouldn't have thought that through.

No. Depicting people of color as monkeys is verboten, period. It was only a few years ago that conservative former Sen. George Allen lost his seat because he called an Indian-American 'macaca,' which is a French-derived word for monkey. How quickly some people forget. The point is not that the Lawsons' need a way to 'get away with it;' it is that they should not produce the SockObama.
