These are not good kids in any sense of the word. Their parents need to pay for all losses and damages, if the idiots are under 18. If over 18, they should pay all costs plus $10,000 or more for being criminals. Then after serving at least 5 years in prison, they should not be aloowed to ever drive or own any tools that could be used in any type of crime. A violation of these terms will result in a 50 year prison term.

burglary tools can be anything from a crowbar to a drill. They get the desigation as burglary tools by how they were used, not by what they are designed or intended to be used for.

I think you are way off base...making the parents pay fines does not teach the juvenile delinquents anything. They need to do communinty service and pay off their spree with hard work and discipline.

I do not understand why anyone would say that the parents should pay it off. That sends the message that no matter what they do their parents will just bail them out. Wrong, they need to learn how to take responsibility for their own actions.

How much community service does it take to pay off a house they've destroyed?
Ouch.
Agreed that the kids need to take responsibility for their actions. How about community service, and then require them to get jobs where 50% of their paychecks go to the victims of their crimes?

As punishment a game of "Survivor, Antelope Island" sounds good to me. Only changes: no TV crews, no audience, no return. No kidding.

I agree...It could take them a life time to pay off the house they destroyed.
Parents not responsible? | 2:01 p.m. June 23, 2008
How come so many right-wing Utahns are so soft on criminals?

Parents ARE responsible - and the sooner they realize it, the better. How many kids do you see run rampant, and the parents just shake their heads? "Boys will be boys"? Nah.

Your kids don't learn to be criminals in decent homes.

If the neighborhood kids are criminals, MOVE! If your kid has a car and gets into trouble: end of car.

And notice: four kids ARE a gang.
