Utah Utes, BYU football: Utes, Cougars ranked among top 20 in preseason poll
287 comments | Read story
The dramatic improvement from the 3 losing seasons immediately preceding Bronco taking over the reins:
5-6, 5-6, 5-7 (15-19, 44%, no MWC championships)
to Bronco's first 3 seasons
6-6, 11-2, 11-2 (28-10, 74%, 2 MWC championships)
is indisputable.
After back-to-back top 20 finishes, and with most of their key offensive players returning, no objective fan can seriously question the legitimacy of BYU being included in pre-season top 25 lists.
Compare Bronco's record with Kyle's,
before:
5-6, 10-2, 12-0 (27-8, 77%, 2 MWC championships)
after:
7-5, 8-5, 9-4 (24-14, 63%, no MWC championships)
and it's easy to see why an objective fan could question the legitimacy of Utah being included in pre-season top 25 lists.
I think both teams are legitimate top 25 teams. BYU should be about 15th in the polls. Utah should be lower in the polls, around 23rd, until they've proven that they can win more consistently throughtout the entire season.
More likely to lose to a D1AA team this year is BYU. Kewg fans keep mentioning 'how tough' they are, and they were ranked last year. BYU could very possibly come out taking them lightly, then, BAM! Right in the kisser. Panthers 35 - Kewgars 32
Michigan by 27? That's exactly the kind of thinking the Utes hope your team has. I'm a BYU fan, but Utah will be returning many good athletes from a year ago. Michigan should win being at home, but you'd better not take Utah lightly.
Running QB, yes.
Passing QB, maybe. A low completion percentage, less than 200 yds/g, and more interceptions than TDs belies the great passing quarterback claim.
Jake has the stats of a below average Air Force QB, great runner, below average passer.
Jake Locker

Chalk that down!
GO UTES!!
BYU will be extremely lucky to be 2-1 after the first three games!! and some of games gets even harderin the stretch. The sucess of the BYU season depends on quickly developing the outside pass rush and cover corners/Dbacks. The cougars have the talent to win'em all, if they can just get the right combination of the field from the start.

Gregory Cox of TheFootballExpert.com has compiled top 25 polls from The Sporting News (Matt Hayes), Rivals.com, ESPN (Mark Schlabach), CNN/SI (Stewart Mandel), and College Football News. Once a team is mentioned, they are in. If they are not included in someone elses poll, he gives them a rank of 30 and then averages out the results.
19 teams, including BYU, were listed by all five sources.
#1 Georgia
#2 Oklahoma
#3 USC
#4 Ohio State
#5 Missouri
#6 Florida
#7 LSU
#8 West Virginia
#9 Texas
#10 Wisconsin
#17 BYU: High (12) Low (22) Average (17.40): This is your BCS buster out of the Mountain West. If they can handle a pair of Pac-10 teams (at Washington. vs. UCLA) in their OOC they might go undefeated.

If you're the expert in Preseason rankings why dont you post your Top 25 and we'll compare yours to Steele's at season's end. Sound Fair?
A good passing QB, whether in the PAC 10, MWC, SEC, or any other conference should have at least 60% pass completions, 200+ yds/gm, and a 2-1 Touchdowns to Interceptions ratio.
Locker may be dangerous as a runner playing quarterback, but his credentials as a passer, based on his first season, are highly suspect.
A 62.8 QB rating won't even get Locker into the top 50 in QB rating, and certainly won't have many football fans around the country declaring him to be the #1 quarterback.
It sounds to me like BYU will be preparing for an Air Force style triple-option attack early this coming season.
Byu had the #1 Defense last year and still lost 2 games and could have lost the UCLA/TCU/Utah games and could have had 5 losses! They only had 2, but with only 3 returning starters on the defense are they going to outscore their oppenents? Probably not, see: tulsa '07 and TCU '05! 50+points and a still lose!
Byu struggles when they face good defenses like UCLA, which held them to 17 points twice, Utah which held them to 17 points, and Arizona which held them to 20! Basically that "great offense" can and has been stopped!
Byu's defense won them those games but this year when they only have 3 coming back, and one injury away from losing one of them, WHAT ARE THEY GOING TO DO? THAT IS WHY PHIL STEELE PUT UTAH AHEAD OF THEM!
Utah has 16 of 22 starters coming back on their team and 17/22 if Casteel is counted. They the best special teams in the conference and probably the country.
Utah 56 UNLV 7
Utah 34 BYU 21
Chalk that down!"
Please don't bet the rent money on your predictions. Caring BYU fans don't want to see you homeless after the season.

Some of the 15 are minor polls, but hey, this is all about the debate, right?
BYU also "could have" gone undefeated!!! A couple of breaks in BYU's favor in each game "could have" given BYU a win in both games they lost.
In hindsight, the only thing that counts is what they actually did, which is 11-2, back-to-back MWC championships, and another bowl win.
Phil Steele is welcome to his opinion, but he's way out of sync with the concensus of most of the other preseason polls that have BYU ranked around 15th, and Utah and Notre Dame not listed.
Personnally, I think Utah should be in the top 25, somewhere between 20 and 25.
Jamie Hill will have BYU's defense well prepared with players who, although they didn't start last year, had significant game experience as backups.
P.S. Where did I get the background information? PHIL STEELE's Magazine. I provided my opinions, the mag provided the facts.
Utah bowls:
Pre-1992 -- 2 bowls (1939, 1964); Utah went 28 years in a row (from 1964 to 1992) without even going to a bowl; they only went to 2 bowls in their first 100 years of football.
1992-2007 -- 11 bowls, almost all of them against unranked opponents:
Bowl -- Final Record -- Opponent
Sun -- (6-1) -- New Mexico
Liberty -- (9-2) -- West Virginia
Copper -- (6-6) -- Washington St.
Freedom -- (7-6) -- USC
Freedom -- (10-2) -- Arizona
Copper -- (8-4) -- Wisconsin
Las Vegas -- (9-3) -- Fresno State
Las Vegas -- (8-4) -- USC
Liberty -- (10-2) -- Southern Miss
Fiesta -- (12-0) -- Pittsburgh
Emerald -- (7-5) -- Georgia Tech
Armed Forces -- (8-5) -- Tulsa
Poinsettia -- (9-4) -- Navy
I doubt many recruits are beating down Kyle's door for the chance to play in a minor bowl as a runner-up in the MWC.
Lets get 'em UTAH!!! BCS here we come!!!
Even when everyone and their dog is going bowling, BYU STILL has an awful bowl record!
Why is it so important that BYU bust the BCS? the Utes, Hawaii, & Boise have already done it.
The last 2 BCS winners have come from the only conference that really matters.
Bowl games used to be a reward for having a great season.

Utah 1963-1991 (0-0-0):
none
As a BYU fan it was so much more fun watching Jim McMahon leading BYU to their Miracle Bowl finish, watching Steve Young CATCH the winning touchdown pass against Missouri, and watching Robbie Bosco on a gimpy knee lead BYU to a National Championship.
Even some of the losses, to Oklahoma State (1974), Navy (1978), Indiana (1979), and Ohio State (1985), were exciting and memorable.
Watching my team play in 16 bowl games, win or lose, was head and shoulders above staying home in December watching someone else's teams play.
It says a lot about BYU's program that they could win the WAC so frequently but lose bowl games so frequently too. That is why BYU has the reputation of being a paper tiger; their records during the 70s and 80s looked far more impressive than the teams actually were thanks to playing a bunch of creampuffs. It's also one of the many reasons nobody likes BYU, they would inflate their record in a weak conference and say "why can't we get any respect?"
YOU HAVE TO EARN IT! And losing to AZ, Tulsa, BC, and UCLA won't give you any.
FYI: Since 2003 Utah is 10-4 against BCS teams, BYU is 5-11 during that same time.
Fine!
Now...
Since Bronco and Kyle became the current head coaches:
BYU is 2-1 vs. Utah, 28-10 (6-6, 11-2, 11-2) overall, with 2 MWC Championships, 2-1 in bowls (all vs. BCS teams)
Utah is 1-2 vs. BYU, 24-14 (7-5, 8-5, 9-4) overall, with NO MWC Championships, 3-0 in bowls (only one vs. a BCS team)
...and Then
The 1974 Fiesta Bowl would have been a great game except for the Oklahoma State headhunters who intentionally knocked Gary Shiede out of the game with two very questionable blindside hits early in the game.
I'll trade the disappointment of losing the first 4 bowl games for the excitement of winning the 1980, 1983 and 1984 Holiday Bowls anyday.
For one of the biggest comebacks in NCAA bowl history, see BYU.
For one of the most dramatic game-ending plays in the NCAA tournament history, see BYU.
Both, by the way, happened during the same school year, 1980-81.
Has Bronco ever won on the road against non-conference teams? That powerhouse Tulsa seams to be getting in the way. At least byu might beat Utah State and get that road win.
FYI: Since 2003 Utah is 10-4 against BCS teams, BYU is 5-11 during that same time.
AS for UNLV, Utah lost to them for the first time is 17 years! Byu on the other hand is 4-2 against them the past 6 attempts and just a few years ago byu lost at home against UNLV, at home!
By the way congrats on winning the Vegas bowl against a 6-5 team with NO Coach, NO QB, NO RB by one and being favored by 11 points. If I remember: Hall: "We need to make a statement for the BCS next year!".....right!!!
AS for the NCAA tournament: One and done, byu in 100 years hasn't gotten to the sweet 16, see BYU.
Utah/Kyle has two: Georgia Tech #21 and UCLA #11
Good luck to all the Utah teams in the coming season. The better they do, and the better all the teams in their conferences do against teams from other conferences, the better chances two or more local teams will be ranked in next year's pre-season poll.
