Shame on you Dave! | 9:49 a.m. June 17, 2008
It is a shame to hear of all this, and to see that you will profit after all. And Liz by your side to help you. I know now that you gave no consideration to us.

Give me a break! What a disingenuous comparison to Bush being called a chimp. And those who make the comparison know it's ridiculous. Historically, blacks depicted as chimps was done to dehumanize them. If the doll was of a weasel or an animal with a long nose, horns and a tail and it was called Joe Lieberman, the insult would be the same.
Timj | 10:23 a.m. June 17, 2008
Thanks for the comment, Jon Dorry.
I actually think some of the stuff posted here is due to ignorance...but people who post it should do a little homework on racism before they post.

"Also, where are Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson? I would have expected them to be protesting on these poor folks front lawn by now...."

Those people are racist to the core. They are saying nothing because their boy is about to launch onto an important career. They don't want to ruin his chances by calling attention to the fact that they haven't protested that the pres has been called a monkey, and worse.

To those who are confused about the difference between a racial slur and GBW's cartoon imagery"

The reason why it's ok to make a sock monkey puppet of GWB is that he is a puppet of Cheney and the neo-cons. He apes whatever they tell him to do. Wonder why gas is going to be $5 a gallon soon? After W finishes his banana reward for lining Cheney's pockets AGAIN, maybe he'll ape throwing grenades at Iran. Has the man ever had a single coherent thought of his own?

Only 217 more days until the zoo exhibit shuts down. Then we clean out the cage we used to call the White House and let either Obama or McCain restore dignity to the Presidency, value to our dollar, and respect to our nation's image around the world.

"Has the man ever had a single coherent thought of his own?"

No only a thought of his own but action as well. Think.. has your house been bombed lately? Has anybody's? Read Ann Coulter for the details.

Are you stupid? Obama will destroy this country worse than Bush. Obama is a completely incompotent idiot worse than Bush. Look at Obama's views and you will see that he is one of the worst presidential candidates in the history of the USA. The only reason he is where he is is because he is half black. If it weren't for that he wouldn't have gotten 3% of the delegate votes. I guess he is better than the pathalogical liar Clinton. She was worse than awful but I am afraid of what Obama will do to this country if he wins.
Malcolm Y | 11:19 a.m. June 17, 2008
>>"Wonder why gas is going to be $5 a gallon soon?"<<

Gas prices have shot up since the Dems took control of Congress. You can thank them. They are so concerned about getting re-elected that they cower in the corner at the first sign of real issues to solve. Except issues like, has Roger Clemens used drugs,? or, the Gonzales firing of US attorneys.
Samme | 11:25 a.m. June 17, 2008
"Are you stupid? Obama will destroy this country worse than Bush. Obama is a completely incompetent idiot worse than Bush."

Not only is he incompetent, he will have an incompetent Democratic Congress to do his incompetent bidding. A perfect storm is brewing.
TC | 11:25 a.m. June 17, 2008
It's not OK to depict Sen. Obama in that way because of the history of racial violence and hatred centered around the supposed similarities between black people and monkeys. This history never led to the lynching of white people or to assaults against white people. And by the way, Sen. Obama can also argue that he is white. And I'm white. The makers of this doll are completely historically ignorant.
ok . . | 11:33 a.m. June 17, 2008
i am going to manufacture a offensive doll depicting the lds religion. i want to see how it sale. I am sure it wont though because that wwould be a big no no in the big bubble of utah people here are stupid.
Curse of Ham | 11:34 a.m. June 17, 2008
Nice going, Utah. You continue to portray yourselves as an ignorant, backward state which is largely out of touch with modern reality. I just hadn't seen racism at the forefront in a while---how nice to know it's still alive and well behind the Zion Curtain.
Maggie | 11:36 a.m. June 17, 2008
The George W. Bush caricatures are based entirely on the man himself as displayed by his performance in office, a record of which we have a clear and dismal history. The Obama representation is something else entirely.
Anonymous | 11:43 a.m. June 17, 2008
Ken Goddard if you are an 'investor' and you want to invest in ridiculous sock puppets - you need a real job!!!

This is yet another ridiculous idea by ridiculous racists who are stuck in an era that doesn't exist. The world has changed folks - either get onboard or get left behind.

Regarding the blogger who said Obama would 'destroy the county' - well, we are in a RECESSION, at WAR, Gas prices are THROUGH THE ROOF, FORECLOSURES are devastating families, UNEMPLOYMENT if rampant and FOOD is getting scarce (see corn crop report).

I doubt if ANYONE can do worse than your beloved BUSH
sadie | 11:57 a.m. June 17, 2008
I wouldn't buy the Obama sock monkey. I won't vote for him either. I don't think we should have an unpatriotic president.
Re: Curse of Ham ster | 12:00 p.m. June 17, 2008
Nice going. Bigot. You continue to portray yourself as an ignorant, elitist wannabe who is largely out of touch with the true nature of the vast majority of the citizens of Utah. How nice of you to sit in your bigoted ivory tower casting aspersions on an entire group of people you know nothing about.

Why do you think being a bigot is more honorable than being a racist?
right-wing is offensive | 12:04 p.m. June 17, 2008
I see the lunatic right-wing has found its way onto another subject to spew their Limbaughesque venom and anger. (have these people ever considered therapy?)
Failing in every social and cultural section of society except being #1 in offensive.
Just Curious | 12:05 p.m. June 17, 2008
Would it have been funny had Gov. Romney been the GOP candidate, and an anti-LDS group marketed a Mitt doll? Wearing nothing but garments, with the Mitt doll holding a hat and a seer stone?

Suppose then the Mitt doll used his hat to transcribe the "New Book of Moron - Play Book for the Future of the GOP"? Would that be funny, or would that be considered hateful and mocking?

Or doesn't it matter? Would that just be free speech in a free market?

It hurts when it affects my family and my friends.
PatL | 12:24 p.m. June 17, 2008
Racism is evil and those who promote racism are evil. This sock monkey promotes racism. I've seen a lot of lame excuses to justify this product but that's all they are - lame excuses.
Jack from Ark | 12:38 p.m. June 17, 2008
Hey everyone look what I found
"Congress shall make no law ...abridging the freedom of speech", .
If congress can't do this who died and allowed some weak kneed blogger the right to stop or start someone making any political statement they wish.
If you think its racist then don't buy it. The vote with your pocketbook is far more efficient than a bunch of un-named thugs threatening someone to stop their right to free speech. We need to get some back bone and we need to stop all the name calling.
We as a people (all of us) cannot survive this on going litany of partisanship dividing us along so many different lines. This is more destructive than 911 by far.
striking resemblence | 12:38 p.m. June 17, 2008
Obama does look like a sock monkey - politically correct or not. It's interesting how political cartoons depict George Bush as a donkey with big ears but the first cartoon type character that surfaces about Obama and we are all screaming "racism".
Hating is evil | 12:53 p.m. June 17, 2008
Hating an entire group of people -- because of their race, religion, gender, nationality, state of residence, etc. -- is evil.

"The thing is..., you cannot judge a race. Any man who judges by the group is a peawit. You take men one at a time."

Boycott This Embarrassment | 12:58 p.m. June 17, 2008
What a bizarre business--apologize for the problem, acknowledge its racial overtones, and then TURN AROUND AND MAKE THIS OFFENSIVE ITEM ANYWAY. Good job! Way to stand up for what you believe! Show everybody just what you're made of! (Which you're doing, believe me.)

What's next, Lawsons? Minstrel shows? You know, by your logic, those public expressions of free speech have long been suppressed by reverse discrimination and left-wing pressure, too! To be consistent, you should be defending and producing those next!

I'm absolutely appalled that the Lawsons know full well that this item offends people--yet they're bound and determined to make it anyway. I guarantee I will never purchase any products their company makes, since I can never support what they stand for.

I encourage every fair-minded citizen in and out of Utah who believes in equality, tolerance, and the abandonment of racial prejudice to do likewise. It's an embarrassment to the state of Utah. Boycott it and every other product the Lawsons sell.

BTW: I'm neither a Obama supporter nor a "liberal." Just some guy who believes in being fair-minded and tolerant more than politics.
Sorry | 1:02 p.m. June 17, 2008
People are way too sensitive. I do not think these people where trying to be racist. Bad idea? Judging from the criticism they received yes. It just seems that most people spew hate and negativity instead of actually getting to learn who these people are. I do not know these people so I will not cast judgement on them.
re:Jack from Ark | 1:02 p.m. June 17, 2008
The First Ammendment protects free speech.

It's up to the sensible Americans to act upon racist speech.

It is Constitutional for the KKK to march and speak through Skokie, but it to "We the People" to illuminate hate speech as well as stupid speech.
PatL | 1:06 p.m. June 17, 2008
I think the people who are making this sock puppet have every right to do so -- that is political freedom in America, and I'm sure the ACLU would defend their right to make the thing. Still, as a Christian and an American, I think that they are evil racists.

This is very different from calling Bush a chimp, which is offensive but not racist. It is the historical context that makes it racist or not. It looks to me like some people don't want to understand the distinction.
A plague o' both your houses | 1:08 p.m. June 17, 2008
To those defending the Obama doll on free speech grounds --

shame on you!

To those painting all Utahns, and by extension, all Mormons, with the same broad racist brush --

shame on you!

btw, the Lawsons have said that the creators of TheSockObama are not of the Mormon faith.
Big Tex | 1:33 p.m. June 17, 2008
"Why is it O.K. to make a monkey caricature of George Walker Bush, but not Barack Hussein Obama?"

Because there isn't a history in this country of white people being compared to monkeys in an attempt to portray them as racially inferior. This doll was obviously intended as a racist caricature.
Frank | 1:39 p.m. June 17, 2008
Its funny how this is an item that should not exist because it came out of a racist world. Yet if this were a world where racism didnt exist then this sock monkey probably would.
Uthaclena | 1:42 p.m. June 17, 2008
People don't really understand the term "RACIST;" It's about a POWER relationship, to inflict upon or deny a group something based on their shared characteristics. George Bush as a chimpanzee suggests that he's a goofball, but make no mistake, he's a ruling member of the majority race! Characterizing an African American as a monkey implies that they are not really human, and it's OK to deny them our human rights. And, it's always been so, but frankly, racism is a self-justifying belief, and most racists aren't very big into history, either.
Denise Velez | 1:50 p.m. June 17, 2008
I do not think that this reflects on the lovely state of Utah, which I visited several years ago, and where I was warmly welcomed. I think it only reflects on the crass commercial bent of these two people who saw a quick way to make a fast buck. I hope they lose their shirts - and learn a lesson at the same time. They should stay away from "monkey" business.
Bush and Chimps | 1:50 p.m. June 17, 2008
For people who pull out the "Bush as Chimp" cartoons as justification for this sock puppet--got a news flash for you: BUSH IS WHITE.

Obvious, no? Well, not to people who are so locked up in their own racial mentality that they can't--or, better said, WON'T!--see into anyone else's.

If White people had a historic legacy of a more powerful group treating them like animals, and even socially defining them as if they were little better than monkeys, dogs, or cattle, it'd be easier to see why the Bush-as-chimp image is so offensive to Blacks.

The Black experience in America has been 100% different than for Whites. Because of the prejudice, differences in power, violence (both threatened and carried out), and so forth, there's historical baggage there that most White people--especially in Utah!--haven't even begun to understand.

Step into the shoes of a Black person sometime. You'll understand much better why the "monkey" label is so much more offensive to Blacks than it is to Whites. And yes, that's "sensitivity training." Many of us could use more of it.
Perpetuation of Racism | 1:51 p.m. June 17, 2008
From my perspective, its likely that the incensed outcrys about racism do more to perpetuate racism and its accompanying divisive emotions than any insensitivity or stupidity does. Creating a sock monkey who resembles a presidential candidate may be insensitive but its a long stretch to consider it racist. I often wonder if its not the egocentric behaviors of the Jesse Jacksons, Al Sharptons and the NAACPs of the world that keep the racism fires burning so brightly when most of us just want to get along with each other.

If insensitive actions/remarks are directed a fat, blonde or short person, people shrug it off as insensitive and move one. However if the same thing happens in regard to persons ethnicity, all tolerance is thrown out the window.

My own circle of association includes all walks of life - diverse ethnicities, religions, races, sexual orientation, etc., but somehow we all manage to get along because we see each other as individuals, with our own individual strengths and foibles.

Maybe we could put away the racism card and focus more on people as individuals.

Isn't it illegal to send death threats via the internet? If not, there should be one drafted soon.
Ironic Irony | 2:09 p.m. June 17, 2008
Anyone besides me find ironic humor in the comments of those who lambaste the entire state of Utah and anything to do with the Mormon church in these posts?

Are bigotry and racism brothers or cousins?
RE: Racism at its extreme | 2:20 p.m. June 17, 2008
>

I read about this discovery in college a few years ago. Seems that monkeys are a racist symbol against whites as well. I think I understand now.
Arnold Ziffel | 2:26 p.m. June 17, 2008
Can`t make one of Bush, he`s not as smart as a monkey
Black & White | 2:28 p.m. June 17, 2008
Some whites need sensitivity training to understand why many blacks are so sensitive to racism.

Some blacks need empowerment training to understand that they don't have to remain victims of racism.

The Al Sharptons and Jessie Jacksons of the world make a living perpetuating racism.

Most people just want to get along.

" Obama is a completely incompotent idiot worse than Bush."

I'm wondering if someone who can't spell "incompetent" is credible on assessing the abilities of the editor of the Harvard Law Review.
RE: Anonymous | 2:29 p.m. | 2:44 p.m. June 17, 2008
If there's anything worse than this sock puppet, the polygamy dolls are pretty darn close. Good use of sarcasm and irony.
The Monkeys Are Insulted! | 2:49 p.m. June 17, 2008
This just in--the chimpanzees at Hogle Zoo are in an uproar. They're pressing against the bars of their cages, angrily screeching and waving copies of George Bush chimp drawings.

Maybe we'd better not insult ANYONE? Just a thought.
Re: Anonymous | 2:29 p.m. | 2:51 p.m. June 17, 2008
Congratulations on demonstrating the essence of racism and bigotry in four little words.
Mike Richards | 3:29 p.m. June 17, 2008
So, what's the issue? Did someone make a monkey out of Mr. Obama? Did someone say that Mr. Obama was a monkey? Did someone say that Mr. Obama looked like a monkey?

Mr. Obama has a white mother and a black father. He is no more black than he is white, and, he is no more white than he is black.

For him or anyone in his campaign to keep playing the "race card" whenever they can find an "offense", meant or unmeant, is vile and offensive.
Glad I don't live in West Jordan | 3:29 p.m. June 17, 2008

Wow! Some of these comments make me fear for our nation. Let's face it folks we are a country full of racists, gor fearing, church going racists. George Bush is an idiot, a liar , and a criminal who has doen more to harm our country using the age old technique of fear and greed. He should be prosecuted and pay the price for creating a mess that will take decades to fix.

Obama may be younger than some, but I am willing to bet all on him at this point. We have lost our souls under the leadership of the religious right. Open up your eyes. Stop thinking about your selfish racist greed and start thinking about your childrens futures.
Bubba - Duh | 3:45 p.m. June 17, 2008
So anyone who makes fun of or disagrees with Obamakins is racists - yep; I guess we are in 08 Politics and the race card has been thrown out already. One again the Demos are splitting America into groups and camps. Supporters of Obama and racists.
SLMG | 3:58 p.m. June 17, 2008
Regarless if it was not intended to be racist the sock doll was. I am not a blogger nor are most of the people that post comments here, we just have an opinion and want it heard.

Enough all ready! The doll is gone never to be seen again (at least we hope so)lets move on
Oh yeah | 4:04 p.m. June 17, 2008
I don't know from racism, but I for one am seriously offended that someone out there is seriously running for office, while trying to look like a sock monkey. Sock monkeys deserve a little dignity and happiness, yet someone has seriously impinged a sock monkys ability at any chance at happiness by mocking their appeariences.

Sock monkeys deserve happiness too!
