I'm in my early 20's and white. Does that make me a racist if I think that this is just a funny look alike parody doll? Or does it make me ignorant?
Honestly.
These days, racial prejudice and injustice is CREATED more than it is CAUSED these days, imho.
But then again, I can't say anything. I'm in my twenties, and I'm white.
I'm in my early 20's, and I'm white, and I still know that this was wrong. So yeah, it does make you ignorant. Even worse, you seem to be proud of it.
Consider, for as long as it takes: Yes, this doll is a parody, and very much so. OF WHAT? Answer that question in light of Black American history and you've got it!
Revs. Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, and others still strike many uninformed whites as over-vigilant. They might overreact in some cases and still have things to learn. (Rev. Sharpton learned his--and reasonably well--about the LDS some time ago.)
Yet in many cases, they're informing us that prejudice is still alive and at work. And IT IS. Open your eyes, and you'll see it.
YOu obviously have never lived in Michigan. I still know people who have stories about police stopping them soley because of their race, police following them to make sure they leave town and on and on.
However true it is, there are still many people in the city of Detroit who feel if they go into the suburbs they will face discrimination. Utah has no monopoly on racism. It was in Nevada where I met the people who were complaining about how there housing values would crash if black people moved in next door. It was a lady raised in Montana and recently moved from Idaho who said she felt unsafe surrounded by a bunch of black people in Detroit. Utah has no monopoly on racism.
It was in West Virginia where a large number of oters admitted that race was a primary factor in their decision on how to vote in the election. This is despite the fact that studies have shown that people will lie about how they will vote on racially cahrged issues.
Over-vigilant??
Rev. Sharpton, Kean College 1994; White folks was in caves while we was building empires ... We taught philosophy and astrology and mathematics before Socrates and them Greek homos ever got around to it."
Black Entertainment Television/Network? Black Church? If they were White Entertainment or White church it would be racist.
Most of the other channels ARE the white entertainment networks. Do you know why there are black churches? Because white people made the black church members sit in balconies, and didn't let them participate. Because white "Christians" didn't recognize the humanity of their black brothers and sisters in Christ. My father preached at a black church one Sunday when their regular preacher was out of town; everyone was very kind and welcoming to us.
And incidentally, I have never compared President Bush to a chimp. Just the south end of a north bound horse!
Here's the sentence you quoted, but sorry to say, I think you missed its true significance:
"They might overreact in some cases and still have things to learn."
Well, there you have it! We still have to think critically about what these men say. They, as many other experts in other fields, can sometimes be wrong--and very much so. Excellent point!
On the whole, however, they should continue alerting the public to the fact that racism and prejudice are still alive and well--WHICH IS TRUE. The Obama sock puppet is direct and compelling evidence of that!
I honestly do not know how to communicate to people the fact that white privilege is alive and well in this country - and because of it, people of other races and ethnicities are often disadvantaged.
Exactly. When, in the history of this country were white people enslaved enmasse for generations? Lynched based on the color of their skin? Subjected to laws the prohibited them from buying homes in certain areas of cities? Kept from voting because they were white? Made to sit on the back of the bus because they were white? Kept out of elite colleges and universities because they were white? Denied full membership in certain religious organizations because they were white? Used by researchers in highly unethical medical research programs because they were white? Made to attend segregated schools because they were white? I could go on and on.
That's right - none of these things happened to white people. But, as a white person myself, I can tell you that you can EDUCATE yourself about the history of both white and non-white people in this country. When you do, I think you will find that as a white person, you have the benefit of privileges that people of other colors and ethnicities are afforded. Please - use that privilege for the betterment of all around you.

I would NEVER endorse all proposed "liberal" solutions by any means. Some of them, particularly on the left-wing extreme, ARE scary and shouldn't be considered. For that matter: Same on the far RIGHT wing, too! But "Liberals" aren't the Red Menace. We do ourselves a disservice by closing our minds to other points of view--as others do when they close their minds to ours.
The Democrats have managed to strike a more resonant and humane tone on racism and prejudice than the GOP. That's why they're drawing the greater share of minorities. Anybody interested in a kinder and more compassionate GOP--as opposed to one that strings us up by our thumbs at the gas pumps, etc.--should be learning from what the Dems are doing in this area, not raising some reactionary hue and cry about PC-ness, the ACLU, fascism, and so forth.
