Good for David. He is bound to go a long ways in the music world. Can't wait for his CD to come out later this year.

Sounds like somebody's jealous!
@ Anon | 4:18 p.m. June 10, 2008
You've done it now....Look out for the comments headed your way.

I think the same thing, but I know better than to say anything about it here, some of the people on this site would eat their own pet before saying such a thing.

Good luck, nice knowing ya.

I love so much of the positive information that I have read about David. He has a wonderful voice. It has been fun to see his upbeat, positive attitude! Congradulations David!
This should be good | 4:38 p.m. June 10, 2008
It will be interesting to see how little archie does when he can't sing songs that are already hits. All he did was found songs that were already popular and that had a lot of emotion and sing them. I guess we'll find out if he can do more than just sing someone else's stuff. Good luck to him but I wouldn't be suprised to see him disappear after 2 cds.
Pets | 4:39 p.m. June 10, 2008
Pets really can taste good and just like David Archie they are often under rated. Go doggy! Go horsey! Go piggy! Go Davidy! I hope your music takes over the world and liberates captives of poverty the world over!

Good for him. I hope a mission is in his plans
Re: This should be good. | 5:47 p.m. June 10, 2008
Yeah, he did found songs and sing them.
an admirerer | 5:49 p.m. June 10, 2008
I don't think he needs a mission, he just neeeds to sing and set good examples!
Pro-Mission | 6:14 p.m. June 10, 2008
Every young male if worthy should serve a full time mission. This is the counsel LDS members have received. Take it for what it is worth.
Anonymous | 6:28 p.m. June 10, 2008
I think David is already on his mission. He is affecting people worldwide in a positive and uplifting manner. His fan base grows daily and I can understand why. He not only has a gorgeous voice but is a sweet, unassuming, humble young man who already is a role model for millions. His likeability factor is off the charts. I for one cannot wait until his full-length CD comes out!

Go Archie!

Sorry, Pro-Mission: As a life long Church member and a returned missionary, I believe there is more than one way to reach out and spread the Message. David A. can "touch" more people in just one concert or one CD than the rest of us during a full time mission.
P.S. I hope I'm not "cursed", but I feel the same way about BYU athletes.
R. Spencer Robinson | 6:47 p.m. June 10, 2008
I lived in Riviera Apartments in Provo when the Osmonds lived above the office. I also worked for the Donny and Marie Show. I did not know the Osmonds well, but did have occasion to talk with them from time to time.

One of the problems they had with serving a mission was they were so well known and popular in most of the world that the LDS Church was concerned they would be a distraction and that young girls would be baptized for the wrong reasons.

Whether David Archuleta should serve a full-time proselyting mission is best left to him, his Bishop and Stake President, and the LDS Church.

Well, my young music lovers, here is one from an old man. At 70 years of age, I too am a IDOL fan. The Mrs. and I watched every week and we voted too. After six somewhat weak seasons, with only a few excellent singer, season seven has to be the best yet. The top 10 this year were great. Personally I am a ballad man, having grown up with Frank, Dean, Sammy, Johnny , and even Elvis at times. I don't like "screamers". If you have a good voice sing, don't scream. As for youthful David Archuleta, I think he will go far if managed correctly and gets the proper advertising. Patti and I plan to add his music to our "good old listening music". That goes for Cook, Johns, White, Mercado, Hernandez, and our fan favorite, Chikezie. Best to all you young people.

WOW GUYS !!! Let's tone down the jealousy and give the talented kid an atta boy. He's young, got a ways to go but the guy has the high hand and he will put it to good use. I wish him the very best in whatever he does. I also plan to add him to my listening pleasure whenever he honors us with a new CD. #1 FAN All the way. The kid melts my heart.........GO DAVID....KNOCK EM DEAD !!!

Let's just hope his "daddy" doesn't screw it up anymore for him. He is young and has had some issues already with his voice box so let's not get too excited. He needs to grow up first and enjoy being a teenager. As for the mission, not everyone needs to go out for two years, some are on a mission for life and having served one myself, there were too many out there for all the wrong reason, family and community pressures. David can make the choice when he gets to that age. David is talented but so are thousands of others and my question if he wasn't from Utah or a mormon would many of you rally care just like the cheerleaders at Murray High never bothered with him until he got his fame -- Good luck to David
mom of four | 7:48 p.m. June 10, 2008
Why can't this kid enjoy his success and just prove all the critics wrong. I don't understand the correlation between obtaining a record deal and going on a mission. I wasn't aware that American Idol was supposed to be about advertising for the LDS church. Let's not put so much pressure on this young kid...how about he gets a little freedom to see what's out there in the rest of world. He's got the rest of his life to sell his religion.

I think David has a lovely voice. I was allso impressed by his humility.I am old enough to be his grandmother and am concerned about where is his mother? We see nothing about her and someone his age needs their mother to be with him to give him advice and her love.He is still a child and needs to finish school. I am looking forward to buying his cd for my neice and for myself.
Give the kid a break!!! | 9:41 p.m. June 10, 2008
Unless you are his bishop, mother or father, back off about a mission. That is nobodies business and it is not our call. This is about his singing, keep your comments in support of his musical life and what he is doing at age 17. If in two years or so an article comes out about him going on a mission, then you can say congrats, otherwise, back off people. Good luck David on your CD, I look forward to getting one, I love your voice and your sweet gentle spirit, stay kind.
A mission? | 10:23 p.m. June 10, 2008
Of course David can do both. He can serve a mission and he can sing. How would it be to have him use his talents as a missionary? What would it be like if people recognized him when he stands on their door steps? Yes, a mission is the right thing. There is time for both. Some day music will fade and be history, but the things learned in the mission field are lasting. Fortunately, everyone who has expressed an opinion on the matter has no say. It's his decision.
Nathaniel | 10:37 p.m. June 10, 2008
I agree with the going on a mission. How can we make exceptions for talented young men. We let our best LDS football players play on sunday, we let our actors act in beer commercials and praise these as representative of the faith??? If these double standards are representatives of the faith well I guess I am about done! It is about Heavenly Father not about talent or athletic pride but serving the lord. I wish this paper would get back to real stories!
re; pro mission | 11:38 p.m. June 10, 2008
Where have you been? It hasn't been "every young male if worthy should serve a full time mission" for at least 5 years now! Be grateful that their are young men like David out in the world setting better examples than some of our missionairies! It wouldn't be safe for him to go now.
Good luck on the career David, You have represented Mormons well. THANKS!
Marion | 1:00 a.m. June 11, 2008
For Nathaniel: "we let footballers play on Sunday?" "we let our actors act in beer commercials???" What's with the "we let?" Have you forgotten all about freedom of choice/free agency? We are fortunate to have many LDS members in the public eye who show the world a positive image of our church and it's members.
All of us are at different levels of understanding and we should try not to judge others who may look at things differently.
Figure it out | 1:33 a.m. June 11, 2008
To This Should Be Good: He will still be singing someone elses stuff, doubt he will write all the music for his new CD. Maybe the songs for the CD will be better suited to his style that what he already did on AI.
Carol in Punta Gorda, Florida | 7:30 a.m. June 11, 2008
American Idol was the best this year. I am 68 years old. I enjoyed the show so much. It is uplifting. It lets you see the possitive side of young people today. There is so much negativity these days. David is a very humble young man. I just hope he continues to stay that way. This is what makes him so likable. He made it this far because of the way he was and the way he sang.
I think his hair should be worn the way he wants it and his clothes what he wants. This trying to make over a person just doesn't seem right to me.
We love him the way he is, no changes, unless that is what he is comfortable with. He is such a wonderful example. I agree that a Mission is a decision that he should make, if he so chooses. No outside pressure. The most important role he can play, is the excellent example that he is already. He is genuine. He knew who his friends were before his American Idol experience. He won't be fooled by those who decide now to be his friend. David, Stay true to yourself.
KDZuch | 7:38 a.m. June 11, 2008
I am amazed and concerned that people are passing judgment on David and others who should/should not serve a mission; participate (or watch) Sunday sports; act in movies or commercials; etc. The church is not in the business of "letting" people do certain things. It is, however, in the business of allowing people to act for themselves and apply the principle of choice and accountability.

Birdman | 7:53 a.m. June 11, 2008
Nathaniel,
What's with the "we" talk. Do you have a mouse in your pocket? "The Church" doesn't "let" anybody do anything. We all make our own choices.
"Teach them correct principles and they can govern themselves."
Serving as a full-time missionary is not a public opinion poll. It's personal. Let David decide what's best for him.
Are you kidding | 8:26 a.m. June 11, 2008
Haven't we all seen or heard stories of the many members of the church who joined for the wrong reason and are now completely inactive with no interest in the church. They often go around saying, "I was mormon and they do these weird things and believe these other weird things..." Of course half of what they say is untrue.

The point is, putting David on a mission would be more of a distraction than anything. He is way too well known and would end up teaching and baptizing like crazy because the people would all want to be around a celebrity. Once he was transferred or finished, the majority of those people would likely go inactive because they only joined for David and not with any real abiding testimony. I think it would be crazy and counterproductive for David to serve a mission.
Dude | 8:34 a.m. June 11, 2008
I won't waste my money on his CD.

Now I would pay money for a Brooke White CD. She has a great, unique voice, and in a recording studio they can take care of the problems with forgetting words!

Go Brooke!
Church won't send him on mission | 10:02 a.m. June 11, 2008
I would be more than willing to bet that the church won't be allowing Dave to serve a mission if he becomes famous. Do you realize how much more he could accomplish through stardom if he stays on the straight and narrow.
It is a new era. After Mitt Romney mormons are on the map, and its a harsh reality that people don't like us. There not going to send David to the Phillipines where no one knows him to teach for 2 years. They will ask him to set a good example, and his mission will be his career, where he will have a much bigger impact.
What the heck! | 10:30 a.m. June 11, 2008
Why are you people even discussing this? Who cares?! He will decide for himself what he feels his best and it is none of our business what he chooses. I would understand this kind of talk if the article was about his choice to serve a mission, but it is not! It is about David getting a record contract. Leave the poor kid alone.
Derek Zoolander | 10:35 a.m. June 11, 2008
Hi - I'm Derek Zoolander, and I'm a big David Archuleta fan, but I really, really, really wish he would stop trying to look so much like me. We can't all be the world's greatest male model. Or maybe he could open the David Archuleta Center for Kids Who Can't Sing Good, and teach all those poor children to sing as good as he sings.
Record Contracts Binding | 10:43 a.m. June 11, 2008
He entered into a record deal, and I'm sure it has clauses that would make it very hard to leave on a mission. Let alone the distractions to the missionary work his fame would cause, I doubt it would be in the cards for him.

But, if he decides to go it would be the most humbling, spiritual experience he could ever have. The church could also give him a special calling within the missionary department, etc.

I also can't wait to hear him sing with the Mo-Tab at a future Christmas program.

Congratulations David and Family.
Boring | 11:04 a.m. June 11, 2008
David Archuleta = boring. Dont waste your money on his CD's
Confused | 11:19 a.m. June 11, 2008
I think that this article was to inform the reader that David Archuleta signed a record contract. It had nothing to do with his faith or his choice to serve a mission. It's funny, how one silly filler article can be taken as an opportunity for debate about who should or should not serve a mission. David has served many people through his voice, and walking around China, standing on people's doorsteps to preach his religion will not likely impact so many people.
greg | 11:21 a.m. June 11, 2008
He has already said he would like to go on a mission, but fame could change things. He could go to Mongolia or some back woods place, I suppose. The great thing is that whether he serves a mission or not it would be a good choice.
He has a great voice, great attitude, great example.
STAY TRUE | 11:54 a.m. June 11, 2008
I Love American Idol...I have bought more albums (CD's...now I gave my age away!!!) of the artists that did not win as the American Idol. Like Chris Doughtry, Clay Akin, and a number more that I can't think of at this moment(I wish Chris D. would record Johnny Cash's "I Walk the Line"). I will buy David's CD's and hope to also see a Christian themed CD soon! To David I hope that the publisity and the music industry will not tarnish your beliefs. Stay close to your family and your church...keep your values. Because you are so young and have not been out into the so called real world (which isn't all that great) STAY TRUE! STAY STRONG! But know the example you will be setting and how you will be judged (not always fairly)and some people strive in looking for and broadcasting any little mistake Mormons make. BEST OF LUCK SHOWING OFF YOUR GOD GIVEN TALENT!
Time | 1:54 p.m. June 11, 2008
What's American Idol?
Who's David Archuleta and why is everyone going nuts over him. You Mormons out in Utah need to get busy. You have way too much time on your hands.
happy happy joy joy | 2:00 p.m. June 11, 2008
Remember when everyone was so positive, saying how great it was when David lost AI, because then he could sign with anyone he wanted, and not be tied down by that restrictive 19 Recordings company? Remember when they were saying that is was even better that he finished second, so he could work outside of the heavy hands of Simon's company? Remember that?

And hey, now everyone is so happy that he HAS signed a contract, with...Simon's 19 Recordings!!! It must be so great to be so happy and positive all the time, even when that happiness contradicts that other happiness experienced in the past. The anti-depressants are working in Utah. Everyone is happy!! ALL the time!!

Good luck, David, and I hope people aren't too crazy around you...
LDS Lady | 3:48 p.m. June 11, 2008
It's no wonder, people think mormons are the most judgemental people. I am born and raised in this religion and I am ashamed how there are so many members who think it is their business to tell people how they should live their lives..... get of Utah and into the real world. Live and Let Live- Judge Not for ye shall be judged...
Gal50 | 4:02 p.m. June 11, 2008
If the music David is handed to record is anywhere as good as his singing talent, he will have lots of hits.

All he needs to be a success is good music and that is in short supply these days.
Famous EVERYWHERE? | 4:10 p.m. June 11, 2008
C'mon, David A. is so well known that he'd be a distraction as a missionary? I bet most people in Zimbabwe, South Africa don't have hardly a clue who he is.

Good grief, 90% of America has the attention span of a piece of toast, so in 3 - 4 years when he's eligible to go, unless his CDs make him a millionaire (very possible...) he could serve just about anywhere in the U.S. and be OK. And again, if Americans know him well, send him to a third-world country where they don't know him.

Yes, it's his choice to serve a mission or not and, true, you don't HAVE to serve a mission to get to the Celestial Kingdom, but you can learn so many things FASTER on a mission because you have so few things to distract you from the work. My mission was a GREAT opportunity to grow.

I hope he serves one.

Even if the "every young man should serve" isn't touted in our meetings (which, I think, it still is) that would certainly be the Lord's desire; every CAPABLE young man SHOULD qualify himself to serve.

Why would He want anything less for His brothers?....
Rich | 6:52 p.m. June 11, 2008
Let's not forget the advice of Jesus Christ: Judge not that ye be not judged. Also, you will be judged by the same standards by which you judge others. I say David will receive the inspiration to live his life as he should. It's nobody else's call, and that includes past LDS leaders. This is totally between him and God.

Kudos to the Archuletas for raising such a humble and likable young man. His dad should be commended for giving him such excellent advice that has led David win one nationwide singing contest and come in second in another. The kid has a fantastic voice and will go far if he desires.

I hope his new company keeps him from offering $1 concerts. David needs to value himself more highly. Too many people in Utah are used to being taken advantage of and don't value their time, talents or resources enough. If he wants to contribute to charity, the best thing he could do is to make as much money as he can and then contribute to the causes in which he most believes.
get real | 7:51 p.m. June 11, 2008
David has been blessed with the gift of music. He can do alot to represent the church by simply keeping his standards and being a good example.
What is he going to do, walk down the street with body guards all day.
Where ever he would be sent, he would be at risk of being kidnapped for ransom.
Good Job! | 7:57 p.m. June 11, 2008
So glad to hear that he is signed, though I never doubted that he would be.
Mary | 9:08 p.m. June 11, 2008
David, You sing like an angel.....can hardly wait to hear the 19 songs.....stay humble, kid!!
