that an alert individual saw the items and notified Police. I think it would be a very wise investment to train tenants to learn how to notice suspicious items for safety purpose...

It's sad our economy is so bad that professionals would have to resort to such conduct because they are in a bad financial situation. Let's all pray that our economy improves, that good people won't be driven to resort to such conduct and that our Heavenly Father will judge those who have caused this country and the world to be in the crisis it is in now where thousands are dying from starvation and where innocent children die from lack of health care coverage.

Let's pray for this man and his family that they may be able to heal and let's be thankful that no one was hurt or injured and that this Dentist was able to find the explosives before he and his patient were killed. This news should compel us to speak about the economic crisis this nation is in. The Tax Stimulus package isn't enough.

Obviously this man has probably already received his rebate but he still was desperate enough to plan to blow up his building for the insurance.

Containers of gasoline, rigged up with fuses doesn't seem suspicious... It seems to be downright obvious.

Training for this type of rarity may be more of a waste.

"good people" aren't "driven" to destroy other people's property and risk destroying their lives to solve their own financial problems (or more likely, satisfy their greedy habits).

And please provide some support for your ridiculous claim that thousands in this country are dying of starvation. Poor people in this country die of diabetes or heart disease from too much McDonald's. No one in the U.S. dies of starvation.

A four-hour seminar explaining that one should call 911 if they see jugs of gasoline hooked up to fuses and a timer. Because otherwise people will just think it's normal.

It's sad that people who appear to be intelligent and well-educated can be both foolish and so self-interested that they don't see any problem with what is obviously (to people with a moral compass approarching normality) criminal behavior. No difference between the guy who does burglary to feed his drug habit and this man who was prepared to commit arson and insurance fraud to solve his personal financial problems, whatever they were. In both cases, they don't care who is hurt if they can meet their own needs or wants. I don't get it!

For a man who was such a good dr, (knowing from personal experience) my heart breaks for this mans wife and daughter. It's sad to see a intelligent, driven, personable Dr. throw his life and career away for money. I hope somehow this family will be able to recover from such a dramatic event. I can't imagine actually coming to the decision to actually try to pull some dangerous stunt off like that. It's unruly desperation.

Mr. Reavy, when you were gathering your facts and wrote this article are you sure you are quoting people correctly when they stated sodium hydroxide was used? Sodium hydroxide is simple lye and mixing it with water will not produce an oxidizing agent. I�m not a chemical engineer or a hazardous materials expert but I�m wondering if you didn�t mean hydrogen peroxide instead. Perhaps someone with the proper credentials can lend their expertise in a later comment. I might as well throw this in too, Mr. Reavy; sodium hydroxide is a chemical name not the brand name and therefore requires no capitalization.

I feel terribly for this man's family and hope that the community will rally around them. His desperate actions have taken him away from his family, and I imagine that they may be in difficult circumstances.

Anonymous, thanks for your kind heart & uplifting words. Those of us who know & love him are horrified & shocked... His poor family needs support. I am deeply saddened that Matt felt so helpless/overwhelmed in whatever situation he's made or found himself in, that he would risk so much...

And I agree, the Heavens need to be thanked for keeping this situation from becoming a devistating catastropy for many more families.
