No ammount of studies, testing or evaluations will ever placate the archiologists.

Dave should have added: "unless the study proves their point of view." In May of last year the BLM/RAC committee visited Nine Mile Canyon. My wife and I went along as representatives of OHV users, U4WDA and USA-ALL to observe. Durring a sit down lunch in a shady shelter my wife asked why they didn't pave the existing road or build a new road
into the area. This would get rid of the dust and/or make a shorter route for the trucks to follow. You would have thought she had set off a bomb from all the negative comments. I was surprised that some of them came from the BLM.
Save the rock art, produce gas | 10:52 a.m. June 2, 2008
Let's do what we can to protect it. Pave the road if need be. Let's also get busy producing more NG from the location. Seriously, these rock huggers need to get some perspective.

Wow. You people ever get out much? Everybody who recognizes the importance of th preservation of these rare resources is not just some whacko. You need to get some perspective. Go walk down into Grand Gulch or Range Creek. It'll help you understand why all of these 'whackos' are concerned. Tourism dollars are drying up in Carbon for a reason.

So long as the petroglyphs are photographed, surveyed and recorded, their worth to archaeology and anthropology is done. Nothing more can be gained for science by simply standing there and gazing at them.

The scouring effects of dust and wind will eventually erode them away, but that was already happening. It will simply happen at a faster rate.

Similar things could be said about throwing a bottle of bleach on the Mona Lisa.

It would be different if these panels were written in reformed Egyptian.
So what? | 8:34 p.m. June 2, 2008
Science isn't the only reason to preserve these images.

We are stuck with oil and gas until something better is developed. Since Nuclear Power has been vertually banned, gas and oil cannot be drilled off shore or in wilderness areas we should just buy all our power from countries that don't like us. That way we can pay high prices and have all the wilderness. It seems stupid to me that China can drill for oil off the coast of Florida and we can't.

Trucks drive past petroglyphs in Nine Mile Canyon. It's unclear how increased dust in the canyon will affect the rock art.
