I thought the same thing, Europeans that play in the NBA I'm sure have all played soccer, faking fouls is in their blood. If he would have even attempted to get the rebound we might have had a chance. The over doing it on the foul was even worse refs are not going to fall for it.
Small Market? | 1:17 p.m. May 15, 2008
People claiming Detroit and Cleveland as small market? Please, they both have football, baseball, basketball, hockey for Detroit. The Tigers have one of the highest payrolls in Baseball. They by no means are small market teams like the jazz. If you remember, the jazz had to share their team with Vegas. Thats small market.
PurplePeopleEater | 1:17 p.m. May 15, 2008
I thought Deron showed he's still got a ways to go to be a mature NBA point guard. He's still not under control as much as he should be.

I watched all of Stockton's career and don't remember him having Deron's lapses as often as Deron seems to. It might be because John sat behind a point guard for awhile while Deron was basically thrown to the wolves earlier in his career.

In time Deron will mature into the best in the NBA--he has that potential. But, sadly, it won't happen in time this year.

I'm sticking with 60-40% chance of winning Friday night. If the Jazz do hold home court, I'll give them a 51-49% chance to win on Sunday in L.A. If THAT happens, then they should go all the way.

Hmmmm. All the way with this current team? Not likely to happen, but we can hope, can't we?

GO JAZZ!

I'm a Lakers fan here in LA, and I will admit that there is no way we would have won last night if it wasn't for the refs. I was pretty ashamed of the two fouls called on Kirilenko and Boozer in the final minutes, one avoiding a turnover, and both resulting in three freebies for my Lakers. I do think the league wants a Celtics-Lakers match-up, but I'm not complaining too much.

Also, did anyone notice TNT only shows Lakers highlights going to and coming from commercials? They and the NBA definitely know that without the Lakers in the playoffs, ratings would drop probably 20-30%.

Finally, I'm a Jazz fan and I hate the Lakers. I'm waiting for a Lakers fan to just admit that the Jazz get ripped off everytime they take the court in Staples. 8 on 5 is a pretty sweet home court advantage, yet my Jazz almost overcame it. Jazz in 7. I still believe, and will never stop.
REFS | 1:25 p.m. May 15, 2008
lets face it the NBA is a franchise, they want to make money, so they are going to help Boston and LA on their way to the finals so they can make bank!
dubbs | 1:29 p.m. May 15, 2008
stop whining Jazz fans, you had your chances to take the lead and take the game, you missed shots, turned it over, don't blame one play.
Commissioner Stern | 1:31 p.m. May 15, 2008
Jazz fans,
I would like to apologize beforehand for helping the Lakers, and consequently the association, for not allowing Utah get past the second round. It's just that the league needs some more fire and better ratings. So, I am trying my best to get L.A. and Boston into the NBA Finals. If Garnett struggles or if Memphis' gift to L.A. (Pau Gasol) can't seem to do enough, then my referees may have to bail me out. I may not have to resort to this for game 6 in Utah because that would jeopardize the lives of my referees with all of you in attendance, but don't count on beating Kobe and the refs in L.A. for game 7. I'm sure that you all understand and I would like to thank you for being such loyal fans to such a small market team.

Sincerely,

D. Stern
Re;Sonics fan | 1:30 p.m. May 15, 2008
So just because your a Sonics fan you are supposed some kind of expert opinion we are all supposed to bow doen too. Your team is a looser too, deal with it.
Jazz fans give it up | 1:34 p.m. May 15, 2008
The only fan base that wants to change the entire structure of the NBA when they lose.

GOOD BYE!!!!
Boston/LA | 1:42 p.m. May 15, 2008
The media was talking about that series before the playoffs even started. Certainly CEOs would do the same.

Needs to get out of basketball | 1:51 p.m. May 15, 2008
All you Jazz fans that hate the NBA so bad maybe you can get a petition up to get the Jazz out of Utah. You don't deserve an NBA team. You can't cry your way to a championship.
TheMagicontinues | 1:51 p.m. May 15, 2008
If Okur doesn't realize by now that the ref's don't call jack in the closing minutes of a game, he may start to figure it out now. He should have manned up and boxed out Pau and he would have got the rebound, game over, Jazz win. Instead, he flopped and took the "euro" way.
Re: Refs | 1:53 p.m. May 15, 2008
Awesome it will be a much better series than a Jazz-Celtic finals.
D Fish? | 1:56 p.m. May 15, 2008
First you say your a Laker fan in LA, then you say your a jazz fan? LOL split personality coming out?
Lakeshow | 1:55 p.m. May 15, 2008
Exactly Worst Foul.

If there was a officating conspiracy against the Jazz, why was Sasha V. called for a possible game changing techincal for trash talking Korver at such a critical juncture? The Jazz have season-long (Sloan's whole career) reputation for fouling physical play. The Jazz leading the league in fouls given is not a new trend.

The only riot in SLC will be if the state has a shortage of Jello and Prozac (leading per capita consupmtion in both products).
PowerHouse | 2:10 p.m. May 15, 2008
I am a Jazz Fan - This was the best game called so far in this series. The game does not come down to one missed or made call.

The Jazz played great, Lakers just beat us this game, we need to be a little tougher boxing out.
This is the play-offs, and should expect more pushing, shoving with no calls.

Here is what I have liked about this series. Each game could have been won be each team. This series is not over, and hope to see a game 7

Now with that said, it is SAD to read Laker fans on here claiming all the Jazz fans are crying and whining.

Come back down to SoCal dudes, you guys have been crying and whining so much it is pathetic.

Kobe wanted to be traded, Laker fans start blaming management, whining and crying and blaming Kobe for getting rid of Shaq.

Before you start accusing others, take a good look at your own fans....I live down here in SoCal and witness it first hand. This happens for every team in the league. Get past it!

Now watch out, Jazz win game 7.

Your rules...Don't Whine when you witness this!!
Utah lost!!! | 2:11 p.m. May 15, 2008
Please stop whining Utah Jazz. Lakers did not complain about the lack of calls when they lost to you in Games 3 and 4. There were so many holding calls, pushing, illegal screens and the Refs did not even bother calling them. Call it more like Home cooking... When the Lakers play in Utah for Game 6, see how many calls go Utah's way....It will just boil down to how well Utah Jazz or the Lakers play. If it is a close game, Utah will win due to the refs being on their side. Count on that. If Utah plays lousy, well of course Lakers win even with Refs calling fouls like crazy on Lakers. Go figure how Fish can have fouls like crazy in Games 3 & 4.. Games 1,2 and 5 hardly any foul for him... What Conspiracy are you talking about....Stop Whining and deal with it..
re: Boston/LA | 2:40 p.m. May 15, 2008
How cares? The media talks about different scenarios all season long. The reason they talked about this series is because the Celtics got Garnet. Had nothing to do with conspiracy.
kobe bryant | 2:39 p.m. May 15, 2008
jazz fans are whiners.
ID Jazz | 2:42 p.m. May 15, 2008
The funny thing about the Lakers fans calling Jazz fan whiners and cry babies when we show factual calls where the Jazz were robbed is that they can't even show or tell us of plays where they were robbed and thats because they haven't been yet. Point out a call where you have been robbed by the refs faker fans. You only call us whiners because you have no argument to bring to the table.
Just decided | 2:45 p.m. May 15, 2008
So I've just decided that I could care less what the Spazz fans on this board think. I've wasted enough time on this board. You guys all have a small-town inferiority complex. And to be honest, you're all more arrogant than you claim the Lakers fans to be. The assumption that the only way you can lose is if the refs take it from you is pretty overboard. On top of that you are all ignorant of statistical probabilities. You all assume that there needs to be an even number of fouls called each game or it's not fair....If the refs were going to just give each team the same number of fouls they should just give each team 25 FT to start the game and then not call any fouls at all. On top of that you sound like a bunch of shut-ins. You constantly refer to people from LA "the big city" as in the movies, drinking lattes etc but what you don't realize is that you sound like you all belong on the farm milking cows.

I'm through with this board-your team is losing in Utah. Have fun watching the Lakers vs. Celtics.
hey talk about rigged?!? | 2:55 p.m. May 15, 2008
did anyone see that charge when pau ran into harpring at the end of the game that the refs let slip away?

how in the world could they have missed that!!!!??? matt had been standing there and gasol charged at him.. you could tell that the ref was about to call the charge, but then he remembered who was paying him (lakers/stern) and didn't want to upset them, watch the replay... it tells all.. this series is rigged... i hate the lakers.. GO JAZZ!!!! win in 7!
A fan | 3:04 p.m. May 15, 2008
I'm not worried about the calls. How about the fact that the commissioner didn't step in and block what might have been the most lopsided trade in NBA history. The commisioners of football and baseball have done it in the past, why couldn't Stern? I hope the Grizzlies' front office enjoys the playoff bonuses they're probably going to get under the table from the Lakers.
Meowmix | 3:18 p.m. May 15, 2008
All I have to say is, reguardless of how the game was refereed, I'm tired of WHAT is called in the NBA anymore. How is an offense player allowed to create contact and it be called a blocking foul? All players are guilty of this, I'm not going to say that the Jazz are not. Boozer is probably the worst. But it's of my opinion that the Jazz lead in fouls per game because they don't play that type of game as much. Jerry won't allow it, he plays team ball. Sadly, other teams with their superstar know how to play the game of the NBA... Basketball is no longer a sporting event, just, entertainment.
HOLD IT | 3:29 p.m. May 15, 2008
Lakers fans: don't talk about a bunch of fans who whine... Gasol argues EVERY call... even if it's a call that benefits the Lakers. How classy is that?
MADRYBEG | 3:35 p.m. May 15, 2008
No whining and complaining or conspiracy theories about the refs or the NBA....blah, blah, blah. I am a Jazz fan. Have been since I was in the fourth grade (I am now 32 years old). The Jazz had their chances and blew it. Boozer needs to show up. Plain and simple. The offense is setup for Deron and Carlos to do their thing. If only of the two are competing then the Jazz lose. So, the refs made bad calls. They did on both ends of the floor. Watch the calls Utah gets and will get at home tomorrow. It goes both ways. Refs are not consistent and never will be. They also made good calls and bogus call in FAVOR of the Jazz. Wake up and realize it is not the refs!!!
Who cares!!! | 3:36 p.m. May 15, 2008
There is nothing we can do to change the way games are refereed. The Jazz just need to go out there and win. There is always some home-cooking, but when it is at the end of the game on several calls. That is messed up. Jazz, please crush the lakers. I am so sick of hearing Kobe this, lakers that, on and on and on.... Lakers have a great team, but so do the Jazz. It is interesting how TNT never replayed questionable calls that weren't called against the lakers. JAZZ HAVE THE MOST LOYAL FANS IN THE WORLD!!!
Satisfied | 3:36 p.m. May 15, 2008
I can say honestly that I am pleased with this Jazz team. I'm sure management will tweak the roster this off season, and with the development of Fess and Almond I don't see anything but positives for us in the future. I definetly would sign Hornacek up to a good coaching contract because I think he is our coach of the future. One last thing is--- how many teams are still in the playoffs? How would you complainers like to be one of the fans of these teams and be fishing now? Things could be worse you know.
Bob Cardon | 4:04 p.m. May 15, 2008
I have read both the laker and Jazz fans comments about the refs the cold hard fact is that in the 3 games played in LA the lakers have been at the line 131 times to the Jazz 65 times at the line. I know the LA fans are not very smart when it comes to math but this a no brainer the refs should be proud of themselfs it really is Refs 3 Jazz 2
Anonymous | 4:07 p.m. May 15, 2008
Hey,"Just Decided", don't let the door hit you in the butt on the way out.....why are you here anyway? I'm proud of the Jazz "whining". We love our team and our sport here in Utah. We support them and stick with them through good and bad, unlike you Laker fans who support when winning and act apathetic when losing. No area backs their team more....some show it by whining....so what?
4 or 5 | 4:28 p.m. May 15, 2008
Its amusing that most of the lakers fans are saying that they predicted a 5 or 6 game series, when before the series started, a few said 5 and most were declaring a sweep before we played a single game. And if they lose will see who will be whining. All you will here about is poor Kobe and his back. On second thought they will do just what the Houston fans did, disappear and then tell all their friends they knew the Lakers were going to lose, because after all they need to show everybody what great basketball knowledge they have. Most of them are band wagon fans, because they need somebody to worship, as in Kobe.
Bigjazzfan | 4:38 p.m. May 15, 2008
It's obvious boozer must go.

one person thinks lakers is a bad machup for him,
but he has had similar numbers for six weeks now, and really most of the second half of the season.

Which mans almost every team he plays is a bad matchup for him,

add to that the putrid defense, from a position that demsnds it,

If you want to win a championship boozer must go,

otherwise if you keep him around it will just be more of the same,

So What do jazz fans really really really want?
tbone | 4:43 p.m. May 15, 2008
Yes the refs were horrible, yes it seems like any big market team gets those benefits, yes the game was winnable. I could go on and on, but the game got away when the jazz couldn't box anyone out and keep gasol and odom off the boards. Memo and booz need to rebound the freakin ball and not watch as gasol and odom get offensive put backs. That is supposed to be the jazz's strength. Booz is playing soft, act like you want to win man seriously!
No more flopping Memo! | 5:07 p.m. May 15, 2008
Memo's flop trying to get the shove in the back typified a bad trend that Memo and Andre get into sometimes. They often flop rather go up hard. Unfortunately they aren't Kobe and can get a file when someone breaths on them. At least Memo's stopped doing it when he shoots. Dang, one rebound....
Anonymous | 5:25 p.m. May 15, 2008
The Jazz usually get hosed by the refs on the road or when playing the Lakers. However, the so-called shove of Okur by Gasol didn't really happen. Unfortunately Okur decided to go for the "European" flop made famous by players like Ginobli and expecting the refs to make a call or bail him out rather than fighting for position and battling for the rebound in the most crucial possession of the game.

Still, I like Okur as he is money on the offensive end especially but to say Gasol got away with a push in that instance was weak and the Jazz can't expect that call on the road against the Lakers as you couldn't expect the refs to call Jordan on a push-off (it's not going to happen!).

NBA refs stink but we all should be used to it by now!
Chance | 6:02 p.m. May 15, 2008
Do the Jazz have plenty of opportunities?? Yes. Plenty. We could shoot 75% from the field, 100% from the free throw line, 80% from 3-pt range, and win games. We are playing great basketball right now. Our numbers are there. We have a lot of rebounds, high field goal percentage (usually - but especially at home), we (usually) make our free throws.
There are a few things I think that contribute to all the whining. And losing.
1. The refs really are terrible. They aren't every reason we lose, but they contribute, and it's hard to ignore that fact. I'm sick of the refs, end of story. But we can't blame them.
Because:
2. DEFENSE. It's hard to defend a 4 headed monster. Bryant, Odom, Gasol, and Fisher. That's hard. BUT - you have to defend better. The jazz are playing well, but they need to step it up.
3. Passion. With the exception of D-Will, Matt Harpring and Paul Milsap, I don't see much passion and desire from the Jazz. If it's there, at least show it. Act like you want it. And hit the big shot at the critical time, then fans won't have to whine.
Utah Laker Fan | 6:06 p.m. May 15, 2008
Jazz fans need to stop crying about a conspiracy. If the NBA really has a conspiracy about "Small Market" Cities going to the Finals, Why does "Small Market San Antonio" always seem to make it to the finals serveral times in the last few years?
Plenty | 6:07 p.m. May 15, 2008
Plenty to be excited about for the jazz.
With all the things going against them, the refs, sub-par performance from Boozer (I believe in him, he's a great player, and will be for a long time to come.), sub-par defense (But who could play great defense against that stacked LA team - ugh.) They played decent defense against Houston.
Even with all of those things, the Jazz are still in games. Winning the ones at home. In LA they are in the games, and have the opportunities to pull out a win. They are close. We win game 6 at home, and have one more shot to win game 7. Tough yes, but doable. Don't put it on any one else's shoulders but your own. Sure the refs are bad, but this team has fought through that before. Just beat the Lakers AND the refs. You have shown you can come close to doing that. Now do it. Who cares about the refs? Go out there and shock the world.
Stacked | 6:41 p.m. May 15, 2008
The Fakers are no where near a great team. Great teams are Boston with Bird, Lakers with Magic, Bulls with MJ. Other then Kobe, no one on that roster will make the hall of fame, or even an all star game, maybe Odom made it this year, can't remember, but great? NADA, Opportunistic maybe, babied definitely.
Purple-Yellow Zebra | 8:53 p.m. May 15, 2008
Jazz fans aren't whiners. You've got to call it even. I don't mind how officials call a game as long as it goes both ways.

All the observations I see in the posts are right on. I don't mind some of the no calls on the Jazz end of the floor - just don't make every ticky tack call you can imagine on the Lakers end. It looked like a parade to the free throw line.

That call at the end of the shot clock against Harpring was PATHETIC. Why don't they just change their stripes to purle and yellow

It was pathetic.
Joyrok | 8:59 p.m. May 15, 2008
Who doesn't whine about calls?

Honestly the Laker's fans whine like everyone else, but if they were a bit LOUDER then maybe we'd hear it.... I don't see them complaining all too loud.

Just because you can "hear" the fans whine about calls or fouls etc etc, doesn't stop a game from happening, players know that the Ref's will not always be on their side. Utah played a better game in LA then all season, Lakers were lucky they held onto the game, because they nearly lost it. It all comes down to who wants it more NOT stupid calls or refs.
Refs | 9:48 p.m. May 15, 2008
go ask the hornets what they think about the officiating. how many offensive calls against paul tonight?
ore. fan | 12:41 a.m. May 16, 2008
Boozer should sharpen up his knees and elbows. Malone always did. ask David Robinson. he went up for a block on Karl who was gunning for the net and when he landed, He was out like a light. It wasn't nice, but Malone was just playing his brand of basketball. It cost him ten grand. but he put out a message, you gonna take that ball outa my hands, you gonna pay a price.
Ref Stats | 1:10 a.m. May 16, 2008
To those interested: The Jazz lost 28 games this season. Of those 28 losses, Delaney refed in 2 losses and Javie refed in 3 losses. Pat Fraher refed in 5 losses. Eddie Rush and Tony Brown Refed in 4 losses. There were several that refed in 3 losses, ie: Bennett Salvatore, Mark Wunderlick, Joe DeRosa, Mike Callahan.
I made this study because I could have sworn certain referees were involved in more losses than others but I found the ones I suspected were only involved in 2-3 losses.
Having said this... I still feel the NBA should find a way for the calls to be more consistent no matter what team or what player or what referee is on the court.
Laker FAns = Whiners | 10:21 a.m. May 16, 2008
I know how you feel. Your non-stop whining about our whining is really annoying.
faraway fan | 4:51 p.m. May 16, 2008
I have my complaints as well but hey , to all of you on both sides...has anyone watched the rest of the playoffs? We are fortunate to have a barn burner of a series going here...and every game so far could have gone either way at the end...what a pleasure to watch this quality of basketball through a series. Here is the real kicker...aside from Harpring, Utah is still very young. Aside from Fisher, so is Los Angeles. I know Kobe and Gasol both feel like they have been in the league a hundred years but that is due to early and heavy exposure. We have a serious rivalry building here and it could go on a long time! What a great time to be watching basketball. And how spoiled are we when there are people all over the world who go to bed not knowing if they will even HAVE a home town tomorrow?!
