We Foul the most | 10:30 a.m. May 15, 2008
The Jazz foul more than any other team. That was how it was all season, our whole team plays either lacks footspeed or is lazy then just grabs guys, which is better than a layup, usually.
I thought the officiating was pretty decent, except my pet peeve when the whistle blows two seconds after a home team missed shot. Booz really didn't get many calls at all though, and probably should go back to the IN RHYTHM elbow jumper, because he can't get anything inside. It is easy to bag on Booz, but he almost always has two defenders on him when he has the ball.
Time to stop complaining | 10:35 a.m. May 15, 2008
Down 3-2, who cares about how the refs were. All that matters is that we have to win game 6 on Fri.

Which Boozer shows up? That answer will tell the story.
I liked the... | 10:36 a.m. May 15, 2008
way the Jazz competed, with the exception of Boozer, who doesn't have much intensity on defense. The Jazz played hard and never let up, even when they were down by 10 or so points. I think for the most part this team has quite a bit of heart.

outside shots | 10:44 a.m. May 15, 2008
Home teams get calls inside it is IMPARATIVE that you make them miss shots outside in the 4th QTR. That is how LA came back on Sunday making us shoot outside. But the Jazz can't stay in front of people thus it is a layup or a foul or both. It is on our D. We know the biases going on the road we can overcome them. LA doesn't want a game seven six will be EXTREMELY INTENSE. It is not in the bag.
Just plain bad! | 10:46 a.m. May 15, 2008
I plan to boycott the NBA in all forms from this point on. The officiating and pampering of "Superstars" has reached the point of WWF--ridiculous. It is almost scripted. It has completely lost all fun that it used to be (ala Magic and Bird).

They will no longer get my money or my support. This isn't a Jazz fan whining; not a Laker fan whining; but a former NBA fan walking away from a multi-million dollar hoax. I've loved the NBA, but I will no longer support them. I call on others to join this fleecing of the public.
re: remember the LA/Det. Finals | 10:47 a.m. May 15, 2008
Yeah - I remember. My team got swept by a small market team. Where's your conspiracy now?
Love Affair | 10:47 a.m. May 15, 2008
Can we all please GET OVER our love affair with that dang KYLE KORVER!!!??? Can we please realize he is a one trick pony!? If he isn't hitting 3's he is completely worthless. Please, let's all whine and cry about this because it is a travesty that Sloan has him in the WHOLE 4th quarter no matter what! CJ came in and played tough and Brewer was playing great as well, yet we see no action from them in the 4th....so sad.

And while I'm whining can I also say Boozer is probably the worst power forward on the defense side of the ball in the league...move your dang feet and actually try to get in front of someone! PLEASE!!! He is a liability on the defensive side as Korver is just a dang liability all around.
socal Jazz | 10:48 a.m. May 15, 2008
Attention Laker fans:

Calling Jazz fans whiners does not address the merits of the complaint--that in key moments the calls (and non-calls) in this series have almost always gone to the Lakers.

If it had only happened once and we cried you might be right.

Just rewatch the end of Game 3, overtime in Game 4, and the fourth quarter of Game 5. If you still think "ah shucks sometimes the refs get it wrong but it evens out, stop whining" than I will buy you a doughnut.

Also see the total number of free throws shot by both teams.
Jazznut1 | 10:48 a.m. May 15, 2008
Bad Refs!
This has been a tradition with Utah.
With Micheal Jordan it was the same story.
Accept the challenge and
expect your power forward to do his job or
have the courage to bench him.
Quit hoping that the refs are going to be fair. Sloan saw that Boozer was better on the bench cheerleading than was his play or leadership on the floor.
Milsap should have been left in the game until he fouled out.
Reality | 10:49 a.m. May 15, 2008
The reality is:

- Yes, the Jazz were cheated of a few points.

- No, the Jazz were not cheated of the whole game.

I only counted three points the Lakers were awarded that they should not have had. One was from a phantom foul on a layup where there was absolutely no contact. The other two were free throws from a foul the Lakers committed that was incorrectly called on the Jazz. The Jazz should have had those two free throws, so you could say that the total cheat was 3 + 2 = 5 points. But we lost by 7, so no fair officiating would have saved last night's game (I should say this morning's game--I live on the Least Coast and am exhausted).

Furthermore, the NBA script calls for popular teams like the Lakers to win. The Jazz ought to know this by now and should play harder to make up for the 3-10 points they're going to lose per game. Is this a surprise to anyone?

After 1998 and "The Shove," it should be obvious that the Jazz have to win on their own and not lean on the refs.
Anonymous | 11:00 a.m. May 15, 2008
obviously when 200 different people see the exact same thing there is something wrong going on. the nba is rigged, all you lakers fans havent had to worry about it cuz your on the other side of it. but us jazz fans have had to the last 10 years. its a joke and im about done with the nba
Friday | 11:00 a.m. May 15, 2008
The good news is Kobe doesn't have 3 days to heal. It was clear his back still hurt. He'll get treatment and have to travel. Still, should be another nail-biter. Can't wait to listen to Jackson complain!
Jazz FT GM4 | 11:04 a.m. May 15, 2008
So, in GM4 when the Jazz shot 45 FT and the Lakers only shot 25 FT...was that "home cooking"? were the refs rigging the game? Did the Jazz get star treatment?

....yeah I didn't think so. Here's your series stats.

Jazz Lakers
Fouls/Game 29.6 24.6
FT/Game 29.4 38.6

So, the 5 extra fouls per game explains the difference in the 10 extra free throws. So, you're telling me the NBA is conspiring to give LA 5 extra fouls per game? In thareh regular season, the Jazz averaged 2 more fouls/game than the Lakers in that series. So why is it hard to believe that there is only a 3 foul/game discrepency between playoffs and regular season FT and FPG? With that difference the FT were dead even at 30/team. So, that tells you that per foul, the Jazz don't get to the line as much. If you look back and who's taking the shots you'll remember that most of your shots come from the outside. Okur's a great outside shooter but it means he's a 7 footer taking a jump shot- wrhich doesn't exactly get him to the FT line. Try a layup or a dunk once in a while.
The Spirit | 11:09 a.m. May 15, 2008
None of this matters. Sports don't matter. The Utah Jazz doesn't matter.
anne | 11:14 a.m. May 15, 2008
Well I dont know what game you jazz fans have been watching. But game 5 was a joke. Your team has a reputation of volume fouling. They send the opposing team to the line more than any other nba team. Let me assure you that all your whinning about the officiating is not going to give you an edge in this series. Had the ref's called the game fairly in game 5, the lakers would have lived at the line. For that reason they had to pick and choose when to call the fouls, If they had it would have been a 3hr. game. You will win game 6 because your fan base seem to be unpredictable. The ref's or the nba want no part of you radicals with the Lakers winning in utah. But you will not win in LA.
Team Player | 11:17 a.m. May 15, 2008
Man, I love watching the development of our young players! I can't believe how good Deron Williams has become in only 3 years in the NBA! And Paul Millsap just does incredible things when he's on the floor - despite being shorter than nearly everyone else who plays his position. Ronnie Brewer and Ronnie Price both play with way more heart and athleticism than anyone thought they were capable of just a year ago. I think this Jazz team is already more talented and mentally tough than the Stockton/Malone teams I loved so much. They're just not yet as experienced and consistently smart as those teams were, because of they're youth. I'm flat out thrilled to know our Jazz are going to be title contenders for a lot of years to come! What a great team and a great game to get to watch! What a great challenge to play the Lakers right now. They are a very worthy adversary.
All that said, from watching the talent and mental toughness of this team over the last two years, I'm feeling very confident the Jazz will win here at home tomorrow, and will play their best road game yet on monday.
RE:re: remember the LA/Det. Fnls | 11:20 a.m. May 15, 2008
My point was that LA fans were crying like babies about the officiating - but now they are soooooo much above whining.

And regarding the foul shots. Some Laker fan posted the number of foul shots in game 4 (45-25 in favor of Jazz). How convenient that he chose that game.

Now look at the entire series:
Game 1: 46-30 Lakers
Game 2: 43-16 Lakers
Game 3: 37-28 Lakers
Game 4: 45-25 Jazz
Game 5: 42-28 Lakers
Total: 193-147 Lakers

You really don't see why Jazz fans are complaining? Again, I'm a Bulls fan, not a Jazz fan. I understand why they're complaining.
Good Guys | 11:25 a.m. May 15, 2008
Hey Jazzies is Karl Malone a "good guy"? Oops looks like not.

And stop whining about free throws when Malone shot more than anyone in NBA history. Whine bout that Jazzies.
JJ | 11:27 a.m. May 15, 2008
I actually thought this was the most balanced officiated game of the series. When I saw that Javie was officiating I was expecting a Laker blow-out, until I remembered that he hates Jackson and Sloan equally.

Sure there were some no calls on drives to the basket and a couple pushes in the back that weren't called, but if the Jazz didn't have 19 TO's and 10+ missed layups they win the game.
Otis B. Driftwood | 11:33 a.m. May 15, 2008
Ah, the hypocritical KOBE KIDS rearing their ugly mugs once again. Of course Jazz fans are whining you dolts, ALL FANS WHINE after their team loses close games like this. You idiotic KOBE KIDS did the very same thing after games three and four.

I agree that the refs jobbed us down the stretch, but it's not because of them that we lost the game. How many times did the Jazz have a chance at taking the lead? Five? How many times did they fail to do so? Fact of the matter, nearly EVERYONE choked when it counted. Okur, Korver, Boozer...the list goes on and on...with the exception of Deron Williams. He's the one bonafide star we have on this team.

Keep Williams, Millsap, Brewer, and CJ Miles. The rest are EXPENDABLE. Trade 'em, let 'em sign elsewhere, or simply buy out their contract, because they are USELESS. Yes, Okur, Boozer, Kirilenko (though to a lesser extent), Korver...they are ABSOLUTELY USELESS.

Utah has a long way to go before they can compete for a title. Their juvenile play on the road, their turnovers, and their inconsistency are all things that need be addressed before they can contend.

Good riddance.
801jazz | 11:37 a.m. May 15, 2008
How about the no call when harpring and gasol crashed into eachother with NO ONE else around to block the view for officials? How often does a no call happen on something like that? There was definatly more contact there than most of the fouls called in the game, and it happened between the only two guys down low, everyone else was at free throw distance. Where was the call??? If your going to call fouls that have no contact what so ever, atleast call the obvious ones. Gasol stood there for a moment staring at the ref waiting for the foul to be called and he even looked amazed.

The Jazz did loose because they didn't show up with the same energy they've had through out the year, but the Refs were unbelievable! Both ways! Jazz and Laker Fans should both be mad about this, there are three officials out there with different angles, but its usually the ref with out a clear view calling the fouls. I want to see more call changes made by the other refs on the floor when they have a better view of what really happend.
Reality? | 11:38 a.m. May 15, 2008
The point you are missing Reality is that those aren't just three points (four if you count BOTH mounting over-the-back non-calls on Gasol in the last minute...which does change the course of the most important part of the game...the end!) That also takes away 4 to 6 points the Jazz may have scored following the fouls (that should have been called)... So that is a 8-10 POINT DIFFERENCE...hmmmm, shocker that both Boston and the Fakers won by...7!!! All it takes are two very timely, scripted calls (or non-calls) to really swing the momentum and outcome of a game.
And enough with comparisons to detroit and SA...I am talking about THIS year, possibly the worst in history of the NBA with ref scandals and other leagues destroying the NBA in revenue...THIS YEAR is rigged and the NBA will see to it that the Fakers/Celtics meet in THIS YEARS finals...it means an extra $400mil for a league desperate for the $$
Lakeshow | 11:43 a.m. May 15, 2008
Number of championship bannners for the Lakers (LA and Minn) 14 vs. Jazz 0. Get ready to cry all summer long over that Jazz fan. Jazz are the Buffalo Bills of the NBA.

Hey, Okur... Euro flops (ie Valde) like that may work midway in the second period, but not under 1:00 in the 4th.

Stern's Laker-Celtics conspiracy. Come on Jazz fan. If true, would Stern referee crews allow Celtics to go 7 against Atlanta? I thought alcohol and drugs are forbidden. Anyone who suggests a conspiracy like that better go check themselves into Betty Ford.

We are beating you without Bynum and Ariza, both who would be in our rotation. Lakers in 6. (With Bynum and Ariza, Lakers sweep.)

Lakers Fans | 11:46 a.m. May 15, 2008
Give it a rest. Everybody complains. "You Jazz fans have no idea how pathetic you sound", and as if you Laker fans sound SO much better trying to play the "bigger man" card. There are always a lot of no calls or missed calls and calls that shouldn't be called. But even Laker fans know that there were a few key whistles that should not have been blown. Odom's dunk? Who was even close to touching him? How about Korver and wussy Walton? Walton shoots a one handed fade away and Korver AGAIN doesn't come close to touching him and the whistle blows? OH, and how about when Gasol decideds freight train it over Harpring when Harpring clearly has position and there's a no call? THAT was convenient!! I don't pay attention to when the Jazz foul because they do it so much. But yes, there were plenty of missed calls that went the Jazz's way, but nothing as obvious as the calls made for the Lakers.
Steve Javie | 11:52 a.m. May 15, 2008
As soon as I saw Steve Javie was officiating, I knew the Jazz would lose. He's a renowned Jazz hater. The same referee who officiated Game 4 of the Spurs-Jazz series last season and who was just horrendous in the game and even threw out the now-deified Derek Fisher for wearing a Jazz uniform. And he was terrible.

McKay | 11:53 a.m. May 15, 2008
Attn: Faker fans- the Pistons sweep over the fakers is a terrible come back for the small market teams being able to win in the NBA. If a team sweeps another team, it pretty much means that the team that got swept (fakers) wasn't in the same class as the team that did the sweeping (pistons)the refs can't do much about that. But in a series where the teams are on par with each other, the refs can single handedly decide a game or strongly influence who wins a game and series..
KORVER HATERS.. | 11:57 a.m. May 15, 2008
All you Korver haters, do you not realize that Korver is the all around better player than Miles or Brewer? I would almost say Miles is better than Brewer. Brewer can't hit a shot outside 18 feet! He knows how to create though. Miles can play defense...most of the time, but he's too inconsistent. Korver can hit a shot from ANYWHERE on the court. He's a great defender, and a non-stop hustler. Korver will alwasy be in towards the end of the game because he is a 92% free throw shooter. Free throws can make or break the game.
GO JAZZ GO | 11:56 a.m. May 15, 2008
Im so sick of TNT CHannel, they were talking ALL NIGHT LONG about the lakers and kobe!!! thanks we have Barkley to talk about the jazz. I know lakers are more commercial, but because of the jazz miller is making a lot of money because of the fans, we are #1 in the country!!! c'mon TNT!!!
Lakers can win IF kobe is playing.
Jazz have more talent, more than one guy!!!c'mon Boozer you must show that you are a POWER forward, last night suck for you!!! please work fot the money...D WILLIAMS AWESOME!!!
Phil Jackson | 11:59 a.m. May 15, 2008
If anyone thinks the Jazz are bunch of cry-babies, I recommend the Lakers fans first look in the mirror. And may you start be reading Phil Jackson's book "The Last Season," which has two themes: (1) Phil's problems with Kobe, and (2) Phil's complaints about the referees. Seriously, it has to be 150 pages of complaints about the NBA refs.

Second, look at Vujacic and Gasol. They are the two biggest whiners in the world. That's all Vujacic's game is--crying to the referees. He has no discernable talent. And Gasol flops like a fish on a highway. Then he gets a pouty look and his reptilian eyes bulge out of his head. That guy is a first-class goober.

But Okur ... | 12:00 p.m. May 15, 2008
The refs were horrible in that fourth quarter, so that's why I am extremely puzzled at Memo's decision to flop at the end of the game instead of going up to get the rebound. Of course, they didn't call the foul. This is the NBA playoffs. In L.A. And you're wearing a Jazz uniform. Don't count on the referees; don't even gamble that they'll make the call. Just get the dang rebound!

200 people....all jazz fans...agree so there must be something wrong with the reffing? Seriously? How about this? 200 republicans all agree that Obama is not the best candidate to lead our country...they must be right? Or, 200 Pepsi employees all think Pepsi tastes better than Coke...it must taste better...

Wow - - - not great on the statistical biases are you?
Hard Fact | 12:10 p.m. May 15, 2008
Sloans love affair with Kyle Korver and his obsession with punishing C.J. for missing the Rocky Mountian Revue have already cost us a title. This window my not open again for a long time. Boozer, Sloan, and Korver need to go.
typical jazz fans | 12:12 p.m. May 15, 2008
fans that espouse conspiracy theories are ones with inferior teams, trying to make excuses. Either that or they are just plain stupid.
re:re: remember the LA/Det Fnls | 12:16 p.m. May 15, 2008
No...I understood your point. Refer to my post on Jazz FT GM4 where I talked to the entire series. The Jazz are only averaging 5 more fouls/game than the Lakers and in the regular season they averaged 2 more fouls/game. So the refs have only called 3 more fouls/game than the average difference. Statistically that is not significant at all.

As for the FT discrepency. In the regular season they were even at 30 FT/game and now the Lakers are averaging 9 more FT /game. Honest, that's not a huge difference when you consider how the two teams are playing.

Go back and look at the difference in the regular season between the Jazz/Laker shot position and this series. You can see it on ESPN.com. In the regular season, the Jazz had a higher percentage of their FGA in the paint than they do in this series. And a lower percentage of in the paint fGA than the Lakers do this series. So, for relatively similar Foul calls, the Jazz aren't shooting FT. Okur and Kirilenko have turned into jump shooters and Boozer had limited production in GMs 1 and 2 so there are fewer in-the-paint/contact fouls.

That's my point
Come on Jazz Fans | 12:19 p.m. May 15, 2008
So much whining in this forum. The Lakers did get the majority of the calls last night but thats why you play for home court advantage. The Jazz will get all the calls in game 6 like they did in game 4 and everyone on here will say how good the refs did. Lighten up a little bit.
Old Port | 12:20 p.m. May 15, 2008
Strange game...the refs need to be more consistent in what they call or don't call. I think it is confusing to the players and leaves the fan with a bad taste on some crucial calls, which did have an effect on the game's outcome. Like Sir Charles said, Boozer needs to adapt to the taller defenders to be successful.
Anonymous | 12:21 p.m. May 15, 2008
I don't understand why Boozer doesn't just play the game. He has been called out by everyone in Jazzland and still has only shown up for one out of 11 playoff games this year. D-will is a bad man. Okur has played his part, and Kirlinko continues to fill the stat sheet. The bench has brought it. Nearly everyone on the team has brought it except Boozer.

That being said, can we please cut down on the stupid fouls. The refs may be biased, but come on, don't make their job any easier. I'm looking at you Matt Harpring.
Starts and refs | 12:29 p.m. May 15, 2008
Come on people, the NBA treats its created super stars with a different set of rules. In fact I think there is a pecking order. How often do they foul out? In fact how often do they get in foul trouble? It does not matter which team the star is on. However, players like Kobe, Labron, KG are going to get all the calls on offense, and very few calls on defense. Malone received the same treatment when he was elevated to superstar. It is quite annoying, and at times it does remind you of a WWF mentality. Im in Las Vegas and watch the games in the sportsbook. Everybody here is a Lakers fan, and all of the talk when watchin the game is about the officating and of course in their minds the Lakers are getting the short end. I just wish officials would treat all players the same, but it ain't going to happen, so quit complaining about the officiating. Deron Williams time is coming for the good treatment from the offiicals, and everybody the Jazz play will complain. However I think the NBA is losing fans because of the officating.
801 cory | 12:32 p.m. May 15, 2008
When the Jazz know its not going to do them any good to flop and hope for a foul, why is it that Boozer and Memo were spending so much time complaining to the refs and flopping? When Gasol gave Memo a shove in the back and ended up getting the ball for an easy two, Memo needs to not worry about looking at the ref and waiting for a call on his overly acted stumble, instead he needs to stay focused on the game and be right back in under the basket. Boozer, what are you standing around under the basket yelling and complaing for when you don't get the foul, Get back on defense!

Yes, the refs seemed to have been calling the game slightly in favor of the Lakers, but come on, if the Jazz would have been making their lay ups and not shooting three pointers in the final minutes of a close game, they could have won. Its not the Refs fault, its the quality of play put forth by members of the Jazz team. DWill Is amazing, but he cant do it alone.

Re:NYC | 12:35 p.m. May 15, 2008
The reason the refs were not calling the same number of fouls is because the Jazz were fouling more. This isn't about equal number of fouls, just because one team has more fouls than the other doens't mean the refs were not fair. Dude this isn't 5 year olds in junior Jazz!.
Ben | 12:34 p.m. May 15, 2008
"I thought it was a push-off," Boozer said. "I've been called for that a couple times this series. I know it's down the stretch of a big game, winning time, but sometimes you want the referees to let players play."

Boozer criticizing the refs for not calling push-offs is hilarious. The funny thing is that he admits its only been called on him a "couple times this series." This despite the fact that he has pushed off way more than a "couple times." In reality, if all the push offs were called, Boozer would foul out of every game midway through the second quarter. This is classic. By the way, Okur flopped, deal with it.

lakers are not whiners? Most of them shoud be in movies the way they flop.
Make sense of the officiating | 12:37 p.m. May 15, 2008
The more I watch NBA basketball, the more I'm willing to accept the idea of conspiracy. I get it... the NBA is a business, they want to make $$$. When small market teams like San Antonio and Utah are in the finals ratings are lower.

I'm not saying it's right, but it helps me understand how games are officiated.
Basketball Fan | 12:40 p.m. May 15, 2008
It's sad to see a well contested game (and sloppy at times on both sides) come down to officiating. Whether you're a Laker fan or a Jazz fan, it was obvious to me as an unbiased observer that the officiating crew felt like they needed to "protect" the Laker lead with a few minutes to go. Let them play down the stretch...enough with the phantom calls, you guys (refs) are professionals! Act like one! Look suspiciously like you're being professionally paid off to the chagrin of the basketball nation.
IowaJazzMan | 12:40 p.m. May 15, 2008
The game last night made me realize a few things:
1-Deron Williams is BY FAR the BEST point guard in the world and SHOULD be an MVP candidate.
2-Boozer is as soft as Nelsons frozen custard with little or no heart.
3-Jerry Sloan will never win a championship with his predicable offense. Clog the middle and it is worthless. He also refuses to play studs like CJ and Almond. Like D-will, we might not know what we have UNTIL THEY ACTUALLY PLAY! Instead he'll play duds like Hart/Collins which honestly could have cost us homecourt advantage because he refused to change until about halfway through the season. Pathetic.
4-Memo is just going through the motions. He sets weak screens, flops, and looks like he's sleepwalking out there most of the time. He's basically out to get his and that's about it.
5-Defense DOES win championships.
6-I despise LA. I've defended Fisher in the past but now I think he's a lying punk. If Utah doesn't win...GO CELTICS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wow | 12:53 p.m. May 15, 2008
And this my friends is why Jazz fans are labeled. Are you guys kidding me... a conspiracy... lets get real. I am a huge Jazz fan and actually supported them this year. Most of the "fans" on here have maybe been to 1 game this year that the tickets were given to them. These are the people that complain about the refs. How about talking about how bad our "D" was to allow all starters on the Lakers in double digits. Talk about how Kobe goes for almost 30 on "10" shots from the field. How Odom runs right by Boozer every play. Also how all 3 games in LA this seriers could of been won by the Jazz if they had more fight in them. Once they get close they get out of there offense. The Lakers flat out won last night. Some of you guys are right the Jazz did play against 12 guys... They were all wearing yellow/purple jerseys. Quit trying to justiy the loss with blaming anybody other then the fact that the Jazz got outplayed down the strech last night, and not by Kobe by the whole team!!
Worst foul | 1:01 p.m. May 15, 2008
