Plan to store Italian nuclear waste rejected

What a bonehead move by EnergySolutions. They upped their name recognition and endearment level with Utahns by putting their name on the former Delta Center, creating a prositive impression in customers' minds. Then they propose to bring nuclear waste to the backyards of Jazz fans and power customers. Talk about taking one step forward and two steps backward! Who wants nuclear waste stored in their state? Let Italy keep its own nuclear waste. Countries will be much better stewards over this technology if they have to deal with their own radioactive waste rather than having the option to export it. For a company that claims to offer solutions, EnergySolutions doesn't seem to have a clue about Utahns.

I agree it was a stupid move by EnergySolutions, but what about Italy?

The US doesn't store all of its waste in the US. So who says that we can't help a brother out by storing some where we have space?

What a bonehead move by the Northwest Interstate Compact. This was a great opportunity to bring money into the state and the region. We are not transporting bombs, for goodness sake, only low-level waste that can be safely stored in very modern facilities. The images conjured up by opponents of this process is a shameful move to sour the public against a process that is safe, financially beneficial and forward thinking.

Has anyone ever heard the story of the camel that wanted to pock it's nose into the masters tent during the dust storm? First, just let me get my nose in there, then my head, then my body. Pretty soon, the camel is in the tent and the master is out.

Energy Solutions is up to no good. They have a lot of slick marketing guys and lawyers who say they will limit their impact on us but trust me, they will inch their way into the tent before you know it. They will turn the temp of the water up slowly and most of us won't even notice.

We can only hope that people in power will hold the line against these guys.

You said exactly why it was a bad idea for this stuff to come here. "Waste that can be safely stored.." NOT disposed of permanantly, just stored. How many years of toxic waste do we have stashed away already? How much is enough? I agree with Legal Eagle, let Italy take store their own waste.

In spite of the warm fuzzy words from Mr. Creamer and crew the shipping, consolidation, and storage of radioactive waste is not always simple and safe. Even though the levels are low problems can and will happen. Why should Utah take the risk for a little profit for Steve Creamer?

The problem with "low level" waste is that everything is either classified as high level (spent fuel rods) or low level (everything else). The waste from Italy will be incinerated in Oakridge, TN. This will concentrate the waste. We do not want the Italian waste coming to Utah.

So, what's the big deal?
More waste for America's wasteland.

Where do the crack-head politicians who support and encourage corporate welfare and Energy Solutions being one of the biggest recipients of corporate welfare from BOTH the State of Utah and Federal government get the idea that those vast and costly tax subsidized subsidies will somehow offset into the black increased jobs and cash flow to the PEOPLE of Utah?

All the so called opportunity and money this economic farce will bring to Utah is so far outweighed by the corporate welfare subsidies Energy Solutions has already received and is attempting to continue to receive. Fact is, the company's actual 'business-related' profitability is non-existent, and its profitability and market value is all shored up and supported by the subsidies, that through nifty accounting techniques are stated as profit... Yup! That's the ultimate form of welfare... take from the many for the elect few, without any payback and all the risk carried by the tax payer. That's Energy Solutions.

Energy Solutions needs to justify its existence by coming up with more viable and honorable Economic Solutions, instead of raping, pillaging and plundering the public coffers for personal corporate greed.

Ok, what is not being said is that nuclear waste is going to be stored there, no matter what. But, the state would get triple the fees for the Italian waste due to the hassle. There is no more danger to bringing in the Italian waste than USA waste, so why not make a little extra dough for the state while we're at it?

Thank goodness clearer heads prevailed!! Unfortunately, there are obviously Energy Solutions employees posting on this board. Why don't you take your company and try forcing this on another state? You thought Utah would just roll over . . . you thought WRONG!!
