And of course those Mexican war bonds were never paid off and Brannan died a pauper.

From what I've read, Brannan lost most of his money through a nasty divorce. And apparently, near death, he was paid about $49,000 in "interest" from the Mexican government--enough to pay off his debts and die penniless.

And, like many holidays and observances that float with their respective date, I should imagine that the church would not approve celebrating cinco de mayo on a Sunday.
