Because the fans vote on the starters for the All Star game and and the coaches the backups and there wasn't enough space because the fans are idiots and wanted AI to start. The voting for this was done by professional sports writers and not fans. This isn't a popularity contest like the All-Star voting is? The fans cripple the All Star voting because they go for flash and not actually who is better.
It is true that D-Will was much better in the 2nd half of the season. The real reason though is that the fans vote for the starters of the all-star team. As a result, Iverson was the starter. We all know the monster year CP3 had, so he needed to be put on the team by the coaches. And how were the coaches going leave off Nash? It's a respect factor for veteran players .. plus he was having another solid year. Bottom line is that if the fans would not have voted for Iverson then D-Will, CP3, and Nash would have represented the west. D-Will wasn't even among the top 10 guards in the west by the fans voting because the majority of them don't really know basketball.
I'm sorry - I think you must be mistaking the All Star game with the Regular Season....The regular season is for seeing who is better. The All Star game is for seeing who is flashier. It's a reward to the fans for paying absurdly overpriced NBA ticket prices.
No one turns on the All Star game to watch pick and roll offense and zone defense. People want McGrady to dunk off his own pass on the backboard, Nash throwing crazy allyoops and behind the back passes, Vince Carter jumping over a 7 footer to dunk....
And yes - they even want to see Jordan and Kobe go one-on-one and not Malone setting a pick for Kobe when the other 7 players all cleared out to give Jordan and Kobe a one-on-one show.
Honestly, I think that's what made the Jazz fans hate Kobe - he waved off Malone's pick in the All Star game and everyone complained "How dare he..." "Malone's a HOF player..." No one told Malone that the AllStar game is a party - not a playoff game.
I say we trade him now, this mental thing he has going on doesn't seem to mesh with either Sloan or Williams. We could get someone strong that could help this team beat the Lakers cause that's what they are going to need to build the team for the next 3 years.
Kobe couldn't play if the refs didn't pamper him and his boys. It may not happen in Utah.
