You've mischaracterized the article when you said "The writer goes on to explain why he thinks food storage may be critical to our survival in the near future."

Read the article again. It's about how to get a better return on your short term investments by speculating in food.

The writer is a paranoid fool. The time is not to entrench ourselves in caves, but to get to work and be productive. That is the answer.

The leaders of the LDS Church(my church) have been recommending to build up a food storage supply for decades, and now someone outside the church is saying the same thing. That should give the advice more weight.
And we can still be productive and work without anybody locking themselves in a cave, etc. Building up a good, solid food storage is good advice for anywhere in the world, and at any age in the history of our race(the human race)
