Huntsman steps up nuclear waste fight

First off I am tired of our Guv being the constant panderer to the winds of comment. In find it annoying that after an article comes out a few days ago stating he isn�t doing enough to oppose this that wow now he steps up. It has become his SOP and it shows him for the truly weak leader he is. Open you eyes Utah!

Second. It's ok to take in waste from our overseas military but not from the nations that host the same military. What flawed thinking, waste is waste. If it's ok to store the waste from the military then it should be ok to store all the waste. If you do your research, this stuff has about as much risk to you as your florescent light bulbs with their mercury. We should not shout to the world that we want to be apart of the world economy Sir John then stipulating that that only means the good parts. Opposing it sounds good in the press thus it becomes good for your political career, right Matheson. Both of you show a narrow mindedness that is shocking.

I saw this coming after last year's legislature passed the bill that gave EnergySolutions the right to increase their amount of storage without State input. I'm not suprised by this at all.

Dear Gov. You'll get more radiation from a dentist office, than you will from Class A waste. None of the toxic stuff is coming to Utah. That stuff will stay in France and Tennessee. If we have the technology and state of the art facility, why not use it, and keep some highly skilled jobs here. It's not dangerous. But, like "global warming" it's the new thing to hang your hat on and make you look like your protecting us. In reality, you get more radiation from a plane flight than from the 6 rail cars of this stuff we'll get.
But I guess facts are pesky things.

Give me a break. Nuclear waste storage is perfectly safe. Point to me a situation where it was not safe... ever. This is just depriving Utah of money and it is Government interfering with the economy once again.

BOO! Governor Huntsman is increasingly becoming a tree hugger liberal under a Republican guise. Don't get me wrong, I believe in conservation, but I don't believe in global warming and think that nuclear power is a clean an powerful answer for our energy crisis. Heck, even the French use it and we often think of them as extreme left wing. The amount of money we can make from nuclear waste that is safely disposed of is amazing and may be able to pay more for education and other worthy causes. Unfortunately, we have a governor who has quit following the voice of the people of his state and instead follows the "expert" opinion of the internet inventing Al Gore.

Even though I am not part of the Republican-Energy Solutions team, I applaud the governor for taking a stand, Utah is not the world's dumping ground.

The amount we would take in is less than 1 percent of the total of storage capacity. Facts are weird things. Were ALREADY storing waste. the SIX rail car loads is miniscule compared with what we already store and process. This stuff is safe, and will add to our economy. It's not stored in downtown salt Lake, or even southern Utah, but in the western desert. It's good for the economy. It saves oil. It won't hurt our evironment. Get clues folks. Get FACTS. Gov Huntsman is jumping on the al gore bandwagon. He needs to jump off and start doing a bit of research, rather than shooting from the hip.

If nuclear wast is such a great thing why are other nations/states so eager to get rid of it??

If the waste is so harmless folks, why spend the time and money to ship it half way around the world to TN and UT?

Maybe the Italians could use it to fertilize their gardens or something harmless like that. There would obviously be no harm in that because it is so harmless.

Maybe they could sell it as a novelty gift in cheap toys. It would be a big seller I am sure to the American Tourists.

Sounds like these fact loving bloggers above are getting kind of silly in this situation.

Please think with your brain and your wallet not just your wallet people. Wallets are dead cow hide, you can do better than that.

All you people that work for Energy Solutions we don't want waste from another state let alone another country. For you to comment on this forum is a joke!. And for those of you that think Nuclear power is so safe tell that to the downwinders in Southern Utah.

Rob Bishop is a joke. We need to vote this clown out of office and elect a rational person who going to represent Utah.

It is time we vote Jon out of office. Increasingly he does not represent Utah. The election is too far away, we should just recall him as CA did with Davis.

Huntsman should be elected Mayor of San Francisco or Berkely California

First, it will go to France and Tennessee. It will be dismantled, and melted down and then shipped to Japan. The waste (Class A) will be shipped here to store. Them be the facts. Now, if you think Class A is so darn dangerous, then you need to get rid of a few things around your home. Those smoke detectors? Higher level of radiation. Trip to the dentist? Higher level once again. Fly in a plane? There again, higher level of radiation. Instead of knee jerk decision, you might want to actually DO some research on this stuff. It's equivilant to 65 box car loads. Six. Not even 1 percent of the total worlds waste. We have the best place, and most technology to store it. Why Not? Jobs are a god thing. This stuff will create some jobs. Added revenue - not bad either. Go out and tour the Clive faciltiy. It's one square mile. One. get real facts first, Sierra Club is hardly creditable on this. After all, they are the ones who don't want drilling for our own oil 350 a gal folks. Thanks. Sierra Club.

THE ANSWER IS VERY SIMPLE GOVONOR. JUST CHARGE THE THE USER OF THE WASTE A STATE IMPORT TAX FEE OF LET SAY, 100 TIMES WHAT THEY ARE PAYING NOW TO IMPORT IT AND IF THEY WANT TO PAY IT GREAT ! MORE $$$$ FOR OUR STATE. LET'S TAKE IT, STORE IT, BUT MAKE THEM PAY, BIG TIME !

P.S. THIS IMPORT FEE IS A STATE FEE, CHARGED BY THE STATE AND ALL MONEY GOES TO THE STATE FOR, LIKE SCHOOLS, PARKS, ECT..

It looks as if the first "to do" items at Energy Solutions this morning was to comment in all the forums.

It does not matter how much money Energy Solutions recieves for the storage. Utahns do not want it here. Keep it in TN or Italy.

uhh, because we have the facility AND technology to store it? I don't work for Energy Solutions. I'm a homemaker. But I have done my homework. It's safe. Much safer than some things I have in my home. Why ship it here? Because we have the facility to handle it. Why not?
