BYU football: Cougars' WR Collie poised for a big year

Well this has got to be good news for the ewetes. Just imagine what Collie will do to the ewetes now that he is back in shape. They couldn't cover him when he was slow and fat, how in Whittinghams green earth are they going to cover him now that he is fast and lean? There won't be any 4 and 18 this year. In fact by the time the 4th rolls around BYU will be playing the 2nd string so as to not run up the score. Not a very good time to be associated with the boys on the hill..

Good article.. Austin is an amazing athlete with great potential at the wide receiver position.. Future NFL star in the making, i wouldn't be surprised if he a record breaking year if he declares for the draft.. He has a family to worry about now...

Man these guys are all doing things so well in life...I don't see how they could ever do anything less than BCS this year. BCS Busters here we come! I'm sick of living in Utah's shadow, its time to make a name for ourselves. These kids are living their lives right on and off the field, and especially now that Collie is married, nothing's stopping them!

Great article! I am very hopeful about the BYU offense this year, and expect Austin to have a great year. Also, I'm glad he's married, that should calm him down a bit, so that he can play relaxed.

Too bad you cougs dont gamble with all your BCS talk you could make alot of money in Vegas with how confident you are in your 2008 team. Did you not see how much money Steve Smith donated to the U program? The Utes will finish higher than the Cougs in 2008!

Steve Smith donated all of that money to fund "A" scholarship... not an extra one, "A" scolarship.

I predict that you will shoot to end up somewhere about middle of the conferednc, with the best "NON-BCS-PERSONELL" in the country, and lose to BYU again, and find some lame complaint about something Collie Said.

Oh, and my prediction, the only ones flipping Kyle the bird this year will be Dr. Hill and the U of U alumni.

a) BYU has NEVER been in the shadow of the Yew. You had two good years under that guy from Florida, and now he's GONE, just like your hopes of being great again. Further evidence that the Yew is not a destination school. You should hope Whit is forever mediocre, because if he ever gets good, he'll be gone too.

b) At 3:13 am, even a Yewt should be in bed! Get some sleep before posting next time.

Steve Smith's money is going to change the whole program in less than one year, and BYU doesn't have anybody donating to their program.

This is a byu article. Steve Smith is a classy guy to donate his money to is alma mater but that won't win you football games.

Hey, I love the Cougs as much as anyone. But one thing I have learned over the years is that most BYU skill players simply don't have the athletic ability to make it in the NFL. No matter how much they dominate in the MWC our skill players just seem to be out of their league at the next level. Remember how dominant Harline was just a a couple of season ago? But way too slow and small for the NFL. Curtis Brown - same thing. Every year BYU's skill guys blow up during the season but just don't measure up enough to draw an NFL paycheck. I love Collie but I think he is also too slow to make an NFL team. He is probably a 4.55 on his best day and that just won't cut it in the NFL unless you are also 6'5" and have a 40" verticle. Our one skill guy who really had the whole NFL package was Luke Staley. If not for the fact that he had multiple surgeries he could have had a 10 year career. Love to see our occassional QB, lineman, linebacker, and tight end make NFL teams though.

Ute Fan, so you enjoy reading all the national press about BYU. Hint, buy the tissue with the lotion so your nose doesn't get so sore from crying. Our players gamble every year. They go out and play the Utes and gamble that nobody is going to get serious hurt from a cheap or dirty shot by a Ute. So do you think the utes will be "sackless" again this year?

On topic: For a player who was slow and out of shape, Austin did pretty well last season. I can't wait to see him in action this fall.

If I were an opposing defensive coach, I think I'd be a little concerned with how to defend everything BYU will throw at them this year. Strong, quick, talented running backs, receivers that run precise routes and can find holes in any defense, and a quarterback who will have even more experience reading defenses and finding open receivers.

If the offensive line can live up to last year's preseason billing, this could be one of the most explosive offenses BYU has had since the '80's.

Steve Smith needs a new accountant. What a terrible investment. Give money to a team that will run up the score on Wyoming and lose all of their big games, (UNLV ouch). Sounds like Steve should have gone to Vegas with his money instead.

Rather than Collie, the skill guy that I think has enough to break the BYU drought and do well in the NFL is Harvey Unga. In fact, I'm afraid he will have around 2,000 all-purpose yards and be very tempted to leave early for the NFL. He reminds me a lot of a bigger, tougher, healthier Luke Staley.

And remember Chris Smith? One of the funnest BYU TEs ever to watch. But like Harline, too slow and small to even make it out of an NFL camp. Our TEs actually have represented well over the years usually despite their lack of athleticism because they had great hands (Mili and Lewis - Coats because he's strong as an ox) but it's the receivers and running backs who just do not bring the same level of speed and athleticism that the NFL requires.

I don't gamble, but I've heard that making money in Vegas has everything to do with beating the spread, not with how confident you are in a certain team.

Unless the Utes are using that money from Steve Smith to buy a couple dozen blue chip players, I fail to see how Steve's very generous donation will help the Utah football team perform any better in 2008.
