Read the whole sonnet:
The New Colossus

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"
Emma Lazarus, 1883

It states that there is a door, so if you have a door then you must have a wall/fence.

I guess it must be rewritten, "...I lift my lamp beside the golden door, but, alas no one shows except those who scale the walls & run-off into the darkness to hide from the light of the lamp!"

Be careful who you call a bigot, it may be you!

Has this country been SOLD OUT OR AM I JUST imagining this?????
C,Jones | 10:08 a.m. April 4, 2008
This, of course, makes the front page of the Deseret Amnesty News as it fits their agenda perfectly. There are about 100 reasons illegal immigration is destroying our country and economy and they find maybe one plus in the whole situation and put it front and center.
Illegals cost about $10.00 for every $1.00 they contribute, THAT IS A FACT and not disputable at all, numerous studies have proven it.Crime is soaring because of them also. If the Deseret News spent as much time trying to fund illegals themselves as they do trying to convince us how wonderful these lawbreakers are, the problem would go away.
Illegal immigration is a scourge on this country and you need look no further than about 1500 state laws currently being enacted to try and take the country back. Wake up, it isn't good, it's all bad.

I am appalled at the negative comments to this article. As stated by a previous poster, the truth is that illegal immigration is both beneficial and harmful. Beneficial in that, at least historically, the use of illegal workers has kept the price of consumer goods lower than they might otherwise have been and good insofar as it provides those illegals with an income they could never expect in their home country.

However, it is also harmful in that there is a criminal element that immigrates illegally to this country. It is also harmful to the illegals who otherwise live and work honestly for many of the reasons stated by previous posters and because they have no real future here.

I'm not an advocate of illegal immigration, but I think we need to be a little more compassionate towards others. Most illegals would prefer to live and work in their own country, but they simply don't have opportunities there. Perhaps we would all be better served if before casting aspersions on others, we contemplate what our lives might be like if the shoe were on the other foot.

Just last night on the news we saw stories of a large cocaine bust and sentencing of the Mexican national who chained his girlfriend to an engine block. I'm sure the government of Mexico is delighted to send these folks to the U.S. so they can remit money back to Mexico. Meanwhile, we, the U.S. taxpayer will continue to foot the bill for all the social services, law enforcement, incarceration, and everything else that is outside of businesses' bottom line. I have nothing against Mexico, but it seems we're not getting their best and brightest, but rather the most desperate, least educated, and lowest skilled. It's a faustian bargain that only businesses and special interests can love.
Why favor Mexico? | 10:15 a.m. April 4, 2008
Why favor Mexican citizens over everyone else in the world who would love an opportunity to work and live in the U.S? Mexico is one of the more prosperous nations of the world, and they should be doing more to help their own people. When we countenance illegal immigrants from (mostly) Mexico, we do so at the expense of other would-be immigrants. What happened to fairness and equal treatment--let alone the rule of law?

Pro-Immigration | 10:24 a.m. April 4, 2008
Immigration is critical to our economy and our society. There is nothing wrong with some fresh life blood to carry on the American dream.

I also believe we need to some rhyme and reason to this process. Let people live here legally, without fear of deportation. Let them conduct their affairs in the light of day. Give them something magnificent to work for and something magnificent to lose.

Two years ago I watched a pro-immigration rally in Chicago. Over 400,000 immigrants and supporters paraded down Jackson. I left my office to watch them from the street so I could see their faces. I saw nervous people emerging from the shadows for the first time. For the first time, they were involved in something they were proud about. They had a voice. They meant something. They stood for something. It was an awesome and moving experience.

I think back on the days of boats filled with immigrants heading to Ellis Island, with the Statue of Liberty welcoming them here. I would have loved to see their expressions.

What a sad time we live in. Instead of being rational and finding ways to work together as human beings, I hear the rantings and ravings of wild lynch mobs. Thank goodness Mr. Jones has the integrity to speak up and try to calm the angry mob. But, I can see it is past that, there are very few willing to listen. It scares me to think what the future will bring...

Without immigrants, our population would be either stable or shrinking. That would not bode well with the looming retirement of baby boomers.
Re: Pure Bigotry | 10:23 a.m. April 4, 2008
A Charged issue because the chaos and the Feds refusal to do anything about it. According to the Heritage Foundation legalizing our current illegal population (12-20M) would be very expensive. This population is predominately low skilled, around 50-60 percent lack a high school degree. This segment (low skilled laborer) will collect an average of $3 of federal benefits for every $1 they pay in tax, which means an $89 billion yearly cost to taxpayers. Once you factor in chain migration, retirement, Social Security, Medicare and Welfare benefits, we are looking at a total cost of $2.6 trillion. On top of that, how many of us remember the immigration rallies where illegals demanded rights and flew their home flags. It shouldnt matter, but I mention this to defuse the bigot accusation. I am a legal, brown-skinned immigrant but first and foremost an American patriot.

It's sad that most of the people reading and commenting on the news in THIS site most likely are of the LDS faith. Last time I checked, that is a church that preaches the Gospel of Jesus Christ. When does the tolerance and Christ like Love for your brothers kick in? The people from Mexico are Human beings just like you or dare I say children of God too. I do realize this isn't a religious post and that's not what is being discussed. All I'm saying is that even though we are all allowed our own opinion on the subject, must we be so rude and full of hatred in the comments I still dont know exactly how I feel about the Immigration issue the states is experiencing because it sure is affecting us in many aspects, but also there are always two sides to the story. Just remember who you represent as disciples of Jesus Christ, who not only loves the American Citizens, but EVERYONE. Even the people he visited south of the border! So instead of allowing hatred to fill your hearts, lets try and find a reasonable solution and TRY to be kind.
Thomas | 11:20 a.m. April 4, 2008
The article mentions that Jones stated that mass Mexican immigration to the United States is a net benefit to this country, but it doesn't explain *how*.

I don't know if that's just a failure of the reporter to write a competent story, or if Jones sort of glossed over that part in his address.

Your LDS religion also supports obeying the laws of the land. You can't have it both ways hypocrit. Now to my little tidbit: Have any of you been to a city high school lately and watched an assembly? I have been to three in the past year and noticed that the MAJORITY of hispanics DO NOT stand up during the national anthem. How does that reality make all of you veterans and true Americans feel? If any of you think these Mexicans respect our land you are absolutely wrong! Actions speak louder than words and I've seen the actions in person from many Mexican youth. They are also getting the education free!
Gringo | 11:28 a.m. April 4, 2008
Again, they don't get those services some people claim that they do for free. 1) if they have undocumment children and they go to school, they are also paying their taxes, so it's not for free. 2) Medical services: I work in a hospital. It's a fallacy that they get services for free. If they want to apply for finalncial assistance, they have to have proof of filling taxes. 3) Newborns in the US are citizens, they're not "illegals". That's why they qualify for Medicaid.
Re: love one another | 12:01 p.m. April 4, 2008
Unless you can prove to me they're LDS, I'm assuming their Baptists. C'mon, that's a pretty blanket assumption without anything to back it up. Sure, some people posted comments that may be over the top, but we're talking about a big issue and a lot of citizens have some legitimate beef. Your assumption that they are mostly LDS is just as over the top as the comments your griping about. Ironic that you complain about the very issue you are engaging in.

Get over your stupidity. If what is patently obvious to over 80% of Americans (polls have shown this), but not obvious to you, well maybe you are just intellectually challenged. The mass immigration of people, blonde or brown haired or otherwise, is a tremendous negative to our country. If we resort to calling those of us who see it as a problem as bigots, then we will just have to stop the conversation and agree to disagree. I'm through with people who make that arguement. Make it all you want...its all you have! Logic, facts, and that which stares you in the face support our view of things.

Biased article | 12:26 p.m. April 4, 2008
This was a terrible article to publish. It's clear disregard for common sense and total reliance on econmic theory is just asking for the rhetoric to get turned up a notch. I know on the surface it sounds like he's trying to bring people together by saying, "Don't worry, be happy"... "All is well with illegal imigration"... "Illegal immigration is good for us".... etc. But the premise is so totally egg headed that it comes off offensive to many who have been personally adversly affected by illegal immigration (my business has been robbed before, but it has been robbed at gunpoint twice this year, both times by groups of Mexicans who are now in our jails).

I think publishing this article is just asking for more bigot-birds.

The Irony of it All | 1:29 p.m. April 4, 2008
Because these are comments to an article posted by an LDS-owned newspaper, am I safe to assume that most commenters here are LDS?

Members of the LDS church believe the Book of Mormon is true. The book claims that an offshoot of the House of Israel fled to the American continent to avoid persecution and destruction. They ultimately formed two societies: the Nephites and the Lamanites. The Nephites were white and prosperous; the Lamanites were not. Ultimately, the Nephites were killed off, but the Lamanites survived and are the principal ancestors of Native Americans and indigeous tribes in Mexico.

So, now we've got Lamanites from Mexico entering the United States and a whole bunch of LDS people, believing them to be from the House of Israel, one-upping each other on their bigoted and venomous comments about them.

If there was ever a group of people you would expect to approach the topic of Mexican immigration cautiously and compassionately, it would be members of the LDS church. But you find the opposite. I live in a large, diverse urban area with few LDS members. We embrace and love our hispanic brothers and sisters. Why can't LDS members do the same?
Patriot | 1:38 p.m. April 4, 2008
To those of you who confuse compassion and the command to support and sustain the law. Get a grip! Your calling people the very names that you accuse them of calling others. For the most part I have not seen much bigotry on these posts. Not many have called anyone a racist name. Wake up you self-righteous hypocrites and see what's happening and look a little deeper at why. The fact of the matter is that we have had a belly full of illegal immigration. If you will bother to look at the Numbers you will see how staggering it is in comparison to our history. I don't want my country Latinized and I don't wan't a billion people here in a hundred years. Yet, this is exactly what is happening. Because of a certain portion of the population being fooled by multi-culturalism we no longer are able to assimilate those from other lands as quickly. We aren't called the melting pot because we allow multiple cultures to exist. We are Americans because we created one culture and one language for everyone to embrace. This is not happening any more. This is why people are angry and upset.
The Other Irony | 1:44 p.m. April 4, 2008
We ("we" meaning American citizens) are in an uproar because others ("others" meaning people who are not American citizens) are entering our beloved land through illegal means.

But "we" are only here because we forced the Native Americans off the land by gunpoint, the deliberate proliferation of disease, and slaughter. Were those means of entering the Americas legal? Good riddance, Mexicans are just coming here to work, not give us blankets tainted with smallpox!

To "Irony of it All"

What is it that you don't understand about sovereign nations and the article of faith you so conveniently ignore that says you support the rule of law?

If you knew anything you would know that the Church recently recanted that Native Americans and indigeous people of Central and South America are the principal ancestors of the Lamanites. There were many other people who came before and after the Lamanites.

I would also suggest you study world history a little more in detail and educate yourself about what happens to great nations that allow themselves to be invaded by another culture and people. The point is, there not around very long after their invaded. Sounds to me like you've confused compassion with stupitidy and ignorance of history.

Please do us all a favor and educate yourself with your big metro area library and universities. A quick search on the internet and an open mind without the self-righteous indignation will allow you to have a more open mind. Try looking at the facts and being a little rational before you call other people names.

Enforcing the law and having compassion are not Mutually-Exclusive. Wake-Up!

There is a support group of like minded individuals concerned about the threat of multi-culturalism to our pristine society. They meet on Saturday nights. All you need to join is a white robe, a coned hat, rope, and a poor education.

To the commenter who addressed Patriot.

Yes, you must be ignorant of the fact that When I say multi-culturlism I don't mean multi-ethnic. Go educate yourself about what multi-culturalism means in todays world. It is basically that all cultures are good and worthy except for the white man's culture. It means that all cultures are superior to the current and often termed "White man's culture".

Yes, you are right that when the Germans and Irish and Italians came here people did say some of the same things. Guess what? We closed the Golden Door for about 40 years in order to do exactly what I advocate and assimilate those giant numbers of legal immigrants. We enacted laws some of which stand today in order to facilitate order and preserve our culture.

Calling me a racist with inferance to the KKK does not make you morally supperior or even correct in your assertions. Try using facts to support your arguments instead of name calling and maybe the rest of us will take you serious.

I work in a service industry and all I know is that hispanic people are willing to work and able to work. We don't even get white applicants for many of our jobs. True, they are lower paying jobs but they offer medical benefits, dental benefits, 401k, tuition reimbursement, etc. The fact is most white people consider themselves too good to work as a housekeeper, janitor, etc.

You have people coming here who are the most goal oriented and optimistic of their respective nations coming here.

We are fortunate that we have not been able to get a handle on our immigration "problem", else our economy would not be as strong as it is.

GO to the Center for Immigration Studies, the Heritage Foundation, Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR.com). The facts and statistics quoted in the forum today are all well known to anyone who has spent more than five minutes on the issue which you probably haven't.
Do your homework on the issue and you will be ready to call your Congressman and demand that he support the SAVE act. Illegal immigration is a cancer that is eating away at this country and is more serious than any other problem we face. You owe it to your kids and grandkids, their country is being stolen right out from under their noses.
The country of Spain needs 2 million immigrants to survive over the next 20 years and even though they have a common language and culture with Mexico they will not allow any Mexican immigrants. Why do you suppose that is? Answer for yourself. We are the only ones stupid enough to let this nonsense go on.

Just saying it does not make it so. Our borders are not secure. The most common immigrant to the United States is poor, uneducated and is breaking our laws. Many use identity theft to get jobs and to purchase cars. There is a huge social cost to educate the children of these people. Our government is passing our many incentives to invite them here. We cant take care of the poor we have. Now we have more to fail with. Many in the world would like to be on the list to come her but we take those come here by breaking our laws. Greed is behind our governments unwillingness to protect our nation.

It's refreshing to read about a Mexican government official that understands the long-term negative impact that illegal immigration will have on Mexico. Many of Mexico's hardest-working and most ambitious citizens are leaving Mexico. At the current pace of outmigration, some rural areas in 15 years will have a very small labor force that is incapable of economic development. I'm glad to hear a Mexican government official talking about retaining their human capital.

Mexico can start by eliminating the red tape for starting businesses and making reforms in business and labor. Similar to the United States, business can raise the standard of living for people when the government steps aside and lets people do their work.

Illegal immigration will be greatly reduced if Mexico can more fully develop its economy.

Hopefully, this Mr. Jones does well with the Mexican government. He seems to have some good ideas for Mexico that will also benefit Mexico.

Personally, I work in retail real estate. We're increasingly looking to do more business in Mexico, so I hope Mexico's economy starts to grow.

I see that you have bought the propaganda hook, line and sinker.

Do a little research and ask a Southern Californian who has lived there for the last 40 years if they think uncontrolled illegal immigration is good for the USA.

Our Economy is not dependant on Illegal labor nor need it be to prosper. This is a myth sold by the Bush admin. and the rest of the business community to make you think that it is. Follow the money and you will see who is dependant on illegal labor. Why would you even wish our nation to be dependant on anything other than ourselves?

Unfortunatley, if you have children or grandchildren they will be the ones to pay for such foolishness as destroying a nation through dependancy instead of self-sufficiancy. Relying on foreigners for money and labor is foolishness.

People focus on the simple facts, what about the ones that really matter. Since the law was put into place in 1968 its been illegal for anyone without permission to enter the country. Since then the number of population has grown exponentially due to illegal immigration. We are now beyond the natural sustainable limits, doesn't really matter what you do now. Every state with the largest population of illegal immigrants don't have enough power, schools, waste disposable plants, sewage plants, etc. Everywhere you go and almost in every state we are suffering the impacts of illegal immigrants coming here, eating food, taking advantage of free medical, social security and many other programs or areas within the economic circle. More than $60 Billion leaves the US and enters Mexico alone instead of being used in our own economy. In short no matter how much of a positive spin you can make on this issue its our own politicians who are to blame for the mess we are in. There are no real benefits to this issue - all the negatives outweigh the positive.

I am white, born here not working, been denied jobs because I don't speak Spanish. I am looking for work in fact I have an interview next week. If hired it will mean for me - getting off of foodstamps, hopefully have medical insurance and getting out of debt. If I had known that to get a job here in Utah you had to be Hispanic/Latino I would have thought twice. I did take Spanish in high school but have forgotten most of what I learned. So I guess I'm a bigot too because I am white, need a job to pay bills and get off of foodstamps. And I feel that whether or not I speak spanish should have nothing to do with being employed. The Canadians that come here even for visits speak english it's time that those from Central and South America learned to do so too especially since they want to make this their home. I'm still trying to figure why a refugee gets more government benefits than I do.

TO: Immigration helps USA.
Legal immigration that is controlled and regulated with immigrants who are screened for disease, criminal background, and other potential problems IS a good thing. We must also screen immigrants and allow in only those who have something to contribute not simply those who are desperate and need taxpayer help to live.
You miss the point entirely when you lump legal and illegal immigrants in the same category. Illegal immigration is destructive and is bringing this nation down in a big way, that is the problem with all open borders advocates, you think that every crook, rapist, murderer or child molester in the world has a right to come to America. They don't! Uncontrolled immigration is more powerful than atomic weapons, ask the English and the Dutch, their respective countries are now gone forever. They admit that immigration was their achilles heel. People like you will bring the same thing on us.
Racism is false argument! | 4:48 p.m. April 4, 2008
Racism and bigotry are favorite words used to make a false argument to confuse the issue. I can support legal immigration and not support illegal immigration. If the illegal component could be brought under control my feeling is it would open the door for more legal immigration so more good honest people would benefit.

Consider:
Too many Republicans let illegal immigration continue due to business interests
Too many Democrats push amnesty to increase political power since they know my doing this it will add another voting block to their base.
Too many ordinary citizens who have had to make a visit to an emergency room, been a victim of a crime or are involved with our schools end up being discriminated against as emergency rooms and schools cater to illegal immigrants and prisons are overloaded with illegal immigrants. It is up to people to fix this.
