Let me be the first comment on the positive side, that the influx can be incredibly good. The US has gone through massive immigration swings before and handled it quite well, unless we want to give Ted Kennedy back. (tongue in cheek.)

That aside, this immigration wave has been handled pretty sloppy on both sides. The first player was the free market/labor folks and instead of asking for serious immigration/visa reform, knowing there was a problem, they did the wink and knod and just let it flow. The business community, the law and order ones, the ones who read Adam Smith, etc should have been the first to get serious about fixing it.

They didn't so the other side steps up with demands for enforcement of our laws before they will go for any visa reform. They get equally sloppy in being so zealous for enforcement they often refuse to even sit down and try to find common ground towards solutions.

In any case, I personally think we are headed in the right direction. Rep Cannon has signed onto the SAVE Act, which proves enforcement is here. Next is some serious visa reform. And in all of it, Sovereignty.

Jones is correct | 3:47 a.m. April 4, 2008
that a root solution to the flood of illegal aliens will be for Mexico to address the massive problems it has; corruption, bribery and lack of respect for the law being highest among them.

If the individuals who come here would instead spend their energies improving their own society both our nations would benefit.

Mexican politicians have a vested interest in the current chaos because it removes pressure to reduce corruption they benefit from.

The solution to Mexico's culture of corruption and lawlessness is not to import an illegal lawbreaking underclass into the US.

For Jones to suggest that the current situation benefits the US is untrue.

Local property taxpayers all over the US are weary of seeing their taxes rise to pay for free medical care in emergency rooms, education expenses for non citizens, the cost of criminal activity by illegal aliens and subsequent court and prison costs.

Jones may put lipstick on this pig but it won't hide the squealing blubber from US taxpayers.
UNFACTUAL | 4:25 a.m. April 4, 2008
It doesn't matter how many ways you journalists try to twist, spin, contort & repackage the same old story. As if something new has been discovered by Jeffry Jones. Like Mexico hasn't bordered the United State for the past 200 years & we're learning something new!

FACTS: US SCHOOLS, HOSPITALS & PRISONS ARE FULL OF ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS!! All costs paid for by US taxpayers. ITS A BOLD FACE LIE TO SUGGEST THAT ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS CONTRIBUTE TO THE US ECONOMY ANYTHING CLOSE TO WHAT THEY TAKE OUT!! DO YOU REALLY THINK A $9/HOUR JOB CONTRIBUTES ANYTHING TO THE US TAX SYSTEM? FACTS: ONLY INDUSTRIES THAT HIRE ILLEGALS ARE ENRICHED!! THEY PAY LOWER LABOR RATES & PROVIDE NO BENEFITS! GUESS AGAIN WHO SUBSIDIES THESE BUSINESSES BENEFIT PACKAGES(health insurance)? US TAXPAYERS!! Of course, when facts are established then it becomes all about racism or compassion. (NOTE THAT ALL COMMENTS ARE ABOUT ILLEGAL STATUS NOT ABOUT ETHNICITY!!!)

Facts don't matter! WHERE'S THE REAL JOURNALISTS? THOSE EXPOSING THE TRUTH ABOUT THE REAL COSTS OF ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION TO AMERICA! WHAT'S WRONG WITH AMERICA? LOUSY JOURNALISM! INDIVIDUALS IN MEDIA ARE UNINFORMED, UNFACTUAL & UNTRUTHFULL. TO DN STAFF WRITERS, PLEASE CONSIDER A NEW PROFESSION!
Yeahright | 4:44 a.m. April 4, 2008
Oh I can't wait to be a citizen of Canimexamerica!! I wish they'd build a wall 30 feet high and 10 feet thick...
Yeah, right. | 4:53 a.m. April 4, 2008
OK, the over-crowded classrooms, over-crowded emergency rooms, the pillaging of welfare, CHIP, Medicaid and every other social program is great for America and the American taxpayer.
Jay | 6:10 a.m. April 4, 2008
Why is that so many seemingly "intelligent" people, like Mr. Jones, lack the understanding of the difference between legal immigration and ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION?

What I want to know is what's in it for these characters who are supporting illegals?
Utahn | 6:31 a.m. April 4, 2008
This is so much baloney I want to puke. The DN and the reporter should be ashmamed to show their faces after writing propaganda like this. The United States is doomed right now to a slow death caused by illegal aliens. Just read the newspapers to learn what "value" they add to our country: crime, welfare, disease and financial ruin. The majority of violent crime in Utah is committed by illegal aliens and you want to bring more here? Cultural diversity has clearly failed. History has never recorded a successful cultural integration, only death and destruction. That will be the future we leave to our children if we allow illegal aliens to come here.
Conejo | 6:35 a.m. April 4, 2008
Here we go. So, Mexico only benefits for the first 15 years? That must be why the USA benefits so much out of this. They start helping AFTER 15 years! All of a sudden they get insurance and start paying their own medical bills right? Not much to back up this opinion on the immigrants helping other than there was a "study". Mexico is just starting to realize all there workers are coming over here. OH NO! We better do something to help our citizens find jobs here! This is great propaganda from the Mexico side.
Consider the source | 6:55 a.m. April 4, 2008
In case you missed it, Mr. Jones is an employee of the Mexican Government. On December 7th, Calderon ordered his diplomats to put a positive face on the Mexican population in the US.
Don't blame Mexico. Last summer Bush did the same thing with a whitewash study by his Council of Economic Advisers.
It is generally believed that illegals are a revenue PLUS for the feds, although the impact of the underground economy cannot be quantified.
State and local governments bear the brunt of the problem without much revenue in return. True, they pay sales tax, but when you cram four families in a single family home the property tax model goes berserk.
As others have already commented, "It's the ILLEGAL part, stupid!"
JWK | 7:02 a.m. April 4, 2008
There are some positive things but there are more negative things. First, if we don't have border integrity then we are not a country. Second, the cost of lost income because illegals suppress the labor market. Third, the cost to our infrastructure such as hospitals that close because of inadequate funding. Fourth, increasing crime (not all because of illegals but a significant percentage.) Fifth, illegal voter fraud because of the motor voter law. Sixth, illegals filing of taxes only to benefit from Earned Income. (They take out much more than they pay in. The EIC program is fraught with fraud.) Seventh, almost $40 billion is sent to other countries from illegal immigrants that would certainly help our economy if spent here.

I have more reasons but it is safe to say that while I agree to treating illegals humanely, I think we need to seal up the border to begin with. Right now, Polosi and the Democrat leadership is stopping the SAVE act and looking to put forth a 5 year amnesty plan. Research it and call your Congressmen.
BigBrent | 7:20 a.m. April 4, 2008
Both congressman Cannon and Bishop realize something has to be done and have signed the discharge petition for the SAVE act. Congressman Matheson signed on as a co-sponsor of the bill but has so far refused to sign the discharge petition to allow the bill to get to the house floor for a vote. I think this is both disengenuous and dhisonest.

Utah's citizens need to bombard gutless Matheson with E-Mails, phone calls, faxs, and letters to give him a little backbone to stand up to the democrat leadership that want this severely needed bill killed.

You know, the headline is right. It is good for us. The police and the prisons will always have work as long as the current trend exists

So M13 is good for the United States After all!
Pa. Reader | 7:31 a.m. April 4, 2008
Every objective study shows immigrants (including ilegals) bring a net gain to our economy. Bigots who protest the use of their taxes to support "illegals" are buying into the hate-speech of extremist radio talk show hosts and myopic politicians who cherry-pick emotional issues and enrich themselves by appealing to the worst instincts in shallow people. The disdain shown towards Hispanic immigrants -- illegal or not -- has its roots in racism, whether the haters admit it or not. Canadian citizens who work here illegally, and there are many, do not incite the same extreme anger. After all, they look and sound like the majority in this country so they must be o.k. Immigration issues should be dealt with in a rational way. Labor, much as capital, should be allowed to flow freely accross borders, within appropriate regulations. The world economy is here. The haters will eventually be left behind.
Anonymous | 7:36 a.m. April 4, 2008
The Mexican government doesn't care about missing workers. They actually encourage illegal immigration, they teach classes on US social programs. The money illegals earn enriches South America not the United States. They don't spend it here they send it home. At the same time they are bilking the US social programs in the amount of billions of dollars yearly. No, it is not an equal exchange, not even close. Crime and low morals is another reason why I am opposed to them being here.
fed up with propaganda | 7:41 a.m. April 4, 2008
This kind of one sided reporting is why I quit take the Deseret News several years ago. ALL IS WELL, ALL IS WELL.
Spanky | 7:46 a.m. April 4, 2008
Nothing more than a public relations ad for Mexico and illegals. They can see the writing on the wall. A growing number of LEGAL American citizens are becoming fed up with the problems they bring, and are tired of paying their way. So what do they do? Hire a public relations firm to put out articles like this. Well, as they say.........it's ain't gonna work.
Kawalh | 7:47 a.m. April 4, 2008
Not legal, no respect. To be legal, get in line, then they get respect and only then.
Keith | 7:48 a.m. April 4, 2008
UNFACTUAL said it all. For the most part, journalism is very sad in the US. When all of these immigrants are legal, we'll have to provide housing. Wait until that cost hits the taxpayers.
RE: Go Back | 8:01 a.m. April 4, 2008
It's funny that you're telling them to learn English, when you haven't quite learned it too well yourself.
Re: Fed up | 8:01 a.m. April 4, 2008
If you quit taking the Deseret News so you wouldn't have to read their propaganda, what are you doing on their website?
Daniel | 8:07 a.m. April 4, 2008
The dismal scholarship in this propaganda piece should be an embarassment to the Deseret News -- precisely the flimsy tripe that reminds me why I'm not willing to pay for it.
Cruisingfool | 8:10 a.m. April 4, 2008
Thank goodness we have ICE and NumbersUSA to sort through this garbage!
Gringo | 8:16 a.m. April 4, 2008
So much anger as well as ignorance. I'm amazed to see how people still believe that undocumented people live out of the Tax Payers. That's absurd and racist (yes, it's related to ethnicity. I don't see any of these people critizing those exploiting workers comp or any other programs used by white people). Undocummented immigrants do not get things for free, they won't ever see a penny from SS for their years of work, they cannot apply for Federal programs. If they get Medicaid it's because they're citizens (or life or death situations, but after the accidents they're on their own).
You talk about missinformation, get your facts straight. This country benefits from exploiting undocumment people. That's a fact.
Social Security | 8:20 a.m. April 4, 2008
Illegal aliens pay into Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security, just like you and me. The government is only starting to come down on companies that hire illegals, but it has ALWAYS come down on companies that don't pay taxes. Companies deduct taxes from them just as they do from you.
The big difference here is that illegals never see that money again. You have a nice fat social security check coming your way. They don't. Many are too afraid to seek medical help for fear of getting deported, so their drain on our hospitals is largely exaggerated as well.
Education and crime? These are real concerns and no one can pretend otherwise. However, the solution isn't to drive them further underground. That hampers their ability to learn English and creates an environment from which crime is more likely to result.

One Sided | 8:15 a.m. April 4, 2008
What he said is true, it does benefit the USA to have illegal aliens here. Lower cost to produce & buy products. But it creates a sub-class of slave-wage labor, where they have to accept the other problems that come with it; such as the payers cutting their hours, sexual harrasment, no overtime pay for overtime hours, etc. They accept this because the payer & they know they will not report it for fear of being deported.
This article is propaganda for open borders, the best way to tear down a sovereign country.
Immigration is good, controled immigration is great, illegal immigration/open borders is parasitic & slow death for both parties involved.
Anonymous | 8:36 a.m. April 4, 2008
To GO BACK why don't you start by taking an Enlgish class yourself. And then encourage everyone else to do the same? LOL
hey GRINGO | 8:50 a.m. April 4, 2008
you're half right;
LOTS OF ANGER, but no ignorance:

illegals show up at the local hospital ER (at least until it goes out of business) for all their medical needs FREE at TAXPAYER EXPENSE

illegals children crowd local schools (where massive resources must be diverted to teaching English and all other programs are slashed) (and standardized test scores drop so you get the "no-child-left-behind but we won't pay for it Bush Fed govt bureaucrats " on your case) FREE at TAXPAYER EXPENSE

Illegals disproportinately wind up in the court/prison system (hey, if you broke the law to get here why bother obeying any other laws you don't like) at TAXPAYER EXPENSE

Illegals drive up auto insurance rates when their uninsured vehicles are involved in wrecks (but hey,... see above) at EVERYBODY ELSES EXPENSE

Oh by the way, no one is cowed by the tired old liberal stunt of calling you a racist if you oppose ILLEGAL immigration.
JIM H | 8:45 a.m. April 4, 2008
Seal the border then we can allow as many immigrants as we deem beneficial. We can decide, hey maybe we'll even want more than were getting now.
We might have to offer bonuses. But it least we will retain our sovereign right to control the immigration.
fed up with propaganda | 8:45 a.m. April 4, 2008
RE TO Re: Fed up & GRINGO I guess I got lucky seeing this story. I scan headlines from dozens of papers every week. You get more news out of British & European papers what is going on in this country than you do papers in this country -- try it, you may learn something.

To Gringo, I guess ESL (ask a teahcer), walk-ins to the hospital emergency rooms with no charge, the 2/3 of illegals in LA on some sort of welfare is the free money that falls from the sky in this country. Do away with all these give away welfare programs and you take care of the white freeloaders also. No racism there.
To Gringo | 8:48 a.m. April 4, 2008
The only racist part of all of this is that you say its racist. I was asked to do the taxes of an illegal. I asked about previous tax returns and he said he had never filed before. He is self employed and I asked for documentation of earnings and he had none. I asked why he was filing this year and he said he was told that he could get money back from the government if he did.

I also know three illegal immigrant women who have recently given birth to a child. Now they qualify for government programs because the child is a citizen.

As far as SS, our government wants to give them the right to receive benefits even if they are here illegally in a reciprocal agreement with Mexico. The thing is, Mexico doesn't have a SS program to reciprocate with and the red tape that exists to work in Mexico is tremendous.

You need to get your facts straight.
Chief | 8:50 a.m. April 4, 2008
Obviously, from the comments you can't fool this crowd. Quit the lies and propaganda please!
Wow, I was wrong! | 8:58 a.m. April 4, 2008
Wow, I was wrong on this whole Mexican invasion thing. It is a good thing! This article told me so! They gave lots of facts to back it up, er, wait a minute, there were no facts!

This is a propoganda piece from the Chamber of Commerce acting under direction of the Council on Foreign Relations acting under executive orders from the Bilderberger management council. Mr. Cannon, editor of this paper OK'd the release of this propoganda. This is insulting to what our eyes are telling us!!! The illegal immigration problem DOES NOT benefit the United States. I spent one Sunday afternoon in the emergency room at Primary Children's hospital. What an eye opener!!! Go there some sunday afternoon, talk to one of the nurses and have her explain who those people are! And imagine just what they might be costing you and I!
Pure Bigotry | 8:59 a.m. April 4, 2008
If these folks were white, blonde and blue eyes this would not be an issue for most of you. Get over your bigotry.
Give us your tired your poor your huddled masses yearning to be free.... Don't these words mean anything to any of you????
I am not an amnesty advocate but it is absolutely cost prohibitive to send these folks back to mexico in the police car. The companies that have hired them need the workers because US workers don't work. Our unemployment in Utah is sooo low it is practically non existent.
The plan.....
Create a way for these folks to stay here legally so that we can know them, tax them track them etc.
Create a sensible guest worker program that can lead to full citizenship which requires the learning english and US history.
Brothers and Sisters..... Quit being Bigots!
BobP | 9:00 a.m. April 4, 2008
This much overt sickening bigotry in an LDS centered newspaper appalls me. The evident greed and nastiness in most posts here. I forgive you but I suspect out Father in Heaven may not.
Re: Professor | 8:58 a.m. April 4, 2008
I assume you mean MS-13, and yeah they are a great group. They get paid to kill border patrol they smuggle people and drugs across the border and are rumored to have helped Al-Qaeda get across the border. Protecting our borders is a safety issue.

UNFACTUAL hit it on the head. thank you
Bob | 9:05 a.m. April 4, 2008
Vote against any politician supporting these illegals. That includes most of the idiot incumbents we have in Utah. The Governor is one of them.
Dave | 9:03 a.m. April 4, 2008
Here we go again. Another heavy-handed politically correct, pro-illegals article. Geez.

There isn't one negative impact of illegal immigration? Not according to the highly subjective reporting by the Deseret Boring Snooze.

Believe me. You're not helping your cause.

I wish we could ship you guys across the border.

What a joke.
Sad times at Utah high | 9:09 a.m. April 4, 2008
Again, the citizens of Utah show their true feelings, Bigotry! It has nothing to do with taxes or SS or anything else. If you look at the nonsense that is written, in most of the comments, and make the claim that the lack of intelligent thought is because of people from Mexico, then you have reason to say they should not be here. HOWEVER, I doubt that is the reason for the garbage that is written. Bigotry is the reason.
They Could Be Beneficial | 9:15 a.m. April 4, 2008
Mexican immigrants could be very beneficial to our economy, if they were legal. America needs an influx of young, hard workers who still believe in having large families. Mexicans even believe in saving. How many Americans can say that? They would be a boon to the country if they came here legally and became citizens. What we don't need is more of the current situation.

Militarize the border, deal compassionately with those already here and set up a workable system to allow legal entry to the country. That would solve everything.
THINK | 9:10 a.m. April 4, 2008
Propaganda is what most of these comments are full of. It's amazing how easily you seem to believe the rhetoric painted by comments about millions of brown spanish speakers gobbling up every dime of taxes we sweat to pay every day, filling our hospitals, jails and wellfare lines and sending all their earnings south. I can only conclude what you all so passionately deny: your first inclination is fear of another race. They're different so they must be evil. No study will ever convince you they are worth anything; only that they take, take, take. Why are you so angry? Don't you live as a free citizen of the greatest land of opportunity? Not all hispanics are illegally here and most illegals are not evil rejects from their countries. The biggest part of the problem is rarely mentioned: the immigration system that brought your and my forefathers here was nothing like the one we have today. "Bring me your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breath free..." It's not as easy as you think to "just get in line".
Agreed.... | 9:20 a.m. April 4, 2008
only the legal one are beneficial to the economy...
Bob | 9:26 a.m. April 4, 2008
"The overall economic impact... is positive"...

Well, I suppose if you ignore crime, welfare consumption, unemployment of American CITIZENS (remember when that word *meant* something????) depressed workers' wages, I suppose their overall economic impact is "positive". Not.
To "GO BACK TO MEXICO" | 9:40 a.m. April 4, 2008
Follow your own advice and learn English.
KM | 9:40 a.m. April 4, 2008
I love to travel to Mexico and I have Mexican friends and speak Spanish. My main concern is overpopulation in the US.

The estimated population in the US in 2050 is over 500 million with current immigration levels, of which almost 150 million would be Hispanics (up from ~40 million now). If you don't think that half a billion is enough, when *would* you suggest cutting immigration? When the population reaches a billion? Two billion? When every person in the world who ever might want to immigrate to the US has done so?
Disgusting | 9:58 a.m. April 4, 2008
Utahns, if these comments are any indication of who you are and what you believe, then you make me sick. You are such an embarassment to the United States and humanity. These comments just confirm what people living outside of Utah think: Utahns are self-important racists.

No wonder nobody takes Utah seriously. No wonder you're the punchline of so many jokes. What other than freaking snake oil noni juice has Utah added to our society?

That giant sucking sound you hear? That is Utah.
Jay | 9:55 a.m. April 4, 2008
I took my wife to the emergency room here. (Texas)

It was filled with illegals (it's the place they know they won't get turned away). I watched as not a single dollar changed hands for every single one of them. The hospital charged me $1280 for a single x-ray. Who was I paying for? Easy answer.

Mexicans could be beneficial IF and it's a big IF.
IF they were legal.
IF they would learn English (they don't have to give up Spanish.)
IF they would get an education and not be limited to menial jobs.
IF they would work with the American system instead of demanding we work with the Mexican system here.
IF they would get off welfare.
IF they would lower their rates of illegitimate births, criminal behavior, etc.

How long do we have to wait?

Newspaper articles tend to ignore all these.
