Detecting defects in little hearts

Great article, great information! Our first child was born with Down syndrome and a heart defect, neither of which were prenatally diagnosed, but which necessitated a life-flight to Primary Children's from Logan. The irony is that, while in labor, I had driven past the U of U medical center and Primary's on my way up to Logan to deliver with my doctor. Since Down syndrome carries with it a 40% chance of recurrenc in subsequent pregnancies, we had perinatal cardiology visits to check for heart defects in each of our three sons. None were detected, and each were born without health issues, but had there been a problem, we would have delivered close to expert care. Thanks to these doctors for saving tiny lives!

It was due to the experienced eye of an ultrasound technician that our daughter's hypoplastic left heart syndrome was detected in utero, and we were able to make a fully informed decision about her future with the help of Kelly Kelso and Jason Su, referred to in the article. Unfortunately, she was not a good candidate for the Norwood-Fontan procedure and lived 15 days. I am so grateful that we did not have to make a hasty, unprepared choice in grief and shock. The more aware parents can be of the possibilities and their options, the better the results, and the more likely a healthy child will be the outcome.
