I'm surprised to learn that the Jazz players and especially Coach Sloan had
no idea who he was. He's been coaching there 20 years now, and he's
never once seen President Monson or interacted with him like that before? Well I
guess he knows them pretty well now. I'm sure that won't be the last
time President Monson tries to do something like that.

I've noticed President Monson at Utah symphony performances sitting up
front and enjoying the performance but this is the first time I knew what a Jazz
fan he was.
He's a very humble and loving man. I wonder if he was close enough to hear sloan's language!!

Me thinks "sloadsshock" is a bit touchy.
While unusual, I would say that having a prominant local celebrity with near courtside seats pat Sloan on the back during half-time is hardly "CREEPY".
Having someone become as creeped out by it, as "sloanshock" clearly is, is CREEPY.

Yeah, I'm a member of the church and I agree that it comes across as

Propaganda, excuse me !? Never fails when a positive article with regards to The
Church appears that someone that is Anti LDS has to make a negative comment!
President Monson is showing not only is he currently The Lord's Prophet and President of The Church, but also shows he is a regular person that enjoys the simple pleasures of watching our Jazz play !

Second, ya it might've been a little shocking but it was great to see a church leader in such a fun environment. We always see them in conference and stuff and it is was great to see them out of that environment and in the public.

Your comments show how ignorant you are. You've never seen a celebrity at
a Lakers or Knicks game get involved in the huddle??? You've never seen
them get more involved than your average fan??? Your comment only shows what
your true motivation is: being critical of the church and its leader, though you
claim that you are commenting only on the "weird" situation of someone
tapping on the coach's shoulder. Nothing about it was weird, especially if

I applaud President Monson for showing he's both a fan and member of our
community. I saw him at the playoffs last year and I hope to see him at more
games.

if anyone sounds completely offended it's you. Would you have written such
a comment if this had been some Hollywood star, Gov Huntsman, or even a former
Jazzman that Sloan still couldn't see, didn't know who they were til
later, and got a little jumpy because of it?
On a different note, it's good to see the duo are able to take over a game if need be. Let's hope the whole team can keep this up as they leave home again for a bit.

Sloansshock, ya know the Mormons were here in Utah long before you were. If it
weren't for the Mormons there would be no Utah. You are welcome to leave
anytime, if you don't like the way of life here, leave. No one is keeping
you here. There always has to be someone rude like you to ruin a nice article
which most people thought was cool that Pres. Monson was at the game.

didn't interact with the players you would be complaining about how haughty

Please get your facts straight. Though it was a little weird to come up to Coach
Sloan during the game, it really wasn't a big deal. As for the
constitution, this website is privately owned, which mean you don't have
free-speech rights here. Neither do I. So before you go around preachin'
about the constitution, you really should 1. read it 2. understand how it has
been interpreted.

The Constitution says that GOVERNMENT may not abridge free speech, so if the
Deseret News were to remove your post it would have not affected your free
speech or any other Constitutional rights. Private entities may abridge to their

Sloanshock-I think you got a little too excited about this simple act of
friendliness. President Monson is a prominent figure in the nation and he was
simply greeting the coach and players. By Boozer's comments did he seem too
offended by it? Jerry Sloan said he was "fine" with it. Thanks to the
Deseret Morning News for the article-I was hoping there would be an article on
this.

I guarantee you if I had Lexus seats and walked right by the Jazz bench during a
timeout, I would try to talk to one of them. Maybe even a high 5 or something,

It really doesn't surprise me that Sloan doesn't recognize Monson. I
wouldn't know if the leader of the Presbyterians or the nearest Jewish
temple tapped me on the shoulder. Not everybody in the world cares about the
current leadership of the LDS, but at least the players did the same as I
would...show respect and get a kick out of it.

But calling this propaganda when ESPN discussed it as part of the game recap is hardly what I would call propaganda.

If the Pope was at a Real Madrid or Manchester United Game and was a fan of one of those teams, it would be all over the Associated Press.

Where was security? The jazz really need to do a better job of keeping the fans
away from the players and the coach during a game. Yes we mormons are famous
for our lack of proper boundaries, but that was unbelieviably rude of Monson to
disrupt the game like that even for a mormon.

I watched the game on YV. I thought it wa aswesome that a community leader
would attend the game. It shows great community support. Thomas S. Monson is
cool. Such a friendly guy. The only thing remotely "creepy" from the
event was that he wore a concervative suit and tie to a sporting event. But
then again, taht is President Monson. Always living his religion.

elo has a good point---if I am critical of The Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-day Saints, I'm anti-Mormon. Weird. But if a member of the LDS is
critical of my behavior or beliefs, they're just trying the save the soul
of some wicked person who just doesn't know better. Typical religious

I'd like to point out it wasn't halftime. It was the middle of the
third quarter and Sloan was conducting his time out. Very rude for anyone to be
so presumptious to think they can walk up to a professional team in a huddle and
slap backs and make small talk. (Note I made no mention of religion) It
probably was covered by ESPN because it was creepy and unusual.
