Corroon likely will be re-elected Salt Lake County mayor, poll finds

I would only vote for Mayor Corroon, if he gets rid of the "double taxation" of Utah Opera season ticket holders. Why should they pay extra to maintain the building, when the Zap tax is supposed to help.

I have no idea what Corroon has done besides trying to stop the construction of the RSL stadium. For that reason alone, he should not be re-elected.

I agree with RSL--except I find Corroon's opposition to the stadium to be reason TO re-elect him.

I too find Corroon's opposition to the stadium the main reason why I am voting for him. As well as not raising taxes during his 4-years and asking the county departments to cut back. Secondly, I'm also very tired of Sandy officials thinking (believing?) they are God's gift to Salt Lake County. (i.e. RSL, Broadway Theatre, those Motel-6 commercials, ad nauseum!)

I, too, believe that Corroon's opposition to the soccer stadium shows his character and integrity. He didn't hold back; he simply did the research and made up his mind based on the facts. We need more representatives who can get to the basics and make decisions on principle. He has my vote.

The reason you don't know what Corroon has done is either A: You don't follow politics, or B: You would never vote for him anyway because you're James Evans.

In response to "arc" - the ZAP tax that relates to the arts (the A in ZAP) is all passed through the County directly to the arts organizations such as the Utah Opera. SLCO does not get any ZAP funding to help support the operations or the maintenance of the buildings that are home to these performances.

My focus is not on Carroon but the poll itself, again.

Yesterday a story comes out based on another Dan Jones survey. In that survey he mixed both primary/general election candidates, double digit margin of error and basically threw out some junk polling.

This poll seems to be much more accurate, so very usable. I do have one problem with todays poll that reflects poorly on Dan Jones and the Deseret News.

In today's poll Dan Jones asked about the Constitution and other third party candidates. In yesterday's story about the 3rd Congressional District he did not. In fact, he didn't even ask of all the Republicans, to include Joe Ferguson; a Republican who is the darling of the Eagle Forum. Had he include Ferguson, he likely would have garnered more support than Chaefettz. By not asking of that candidate Jones skewed the results.

In today's poll Jones admits that placement of candidates matters. He says the third-party likely received 9% because he was the first candidate.

Sadly, Jones runs a propaganda machine. He is driving voters, not reflecting them.

If we re-elect Corroon we will keep one of the few politicians in this state who actually respond to the will of the people. Granted he does not bear the mark of 'R' favored by the vast majority of the voters. However, a different flavor is good for us. This is especially true now when so many with 'R' behind their names have demonstrated unresponsiveness to all but special interests and themselves, with the wishes of the folks ignored. Come on Utah! Most imcumbents need to become ex-office holders. We all could do with a flavor change to one more palatable.
Reject labels and vote for the person. That means we must ask questions and pay attention to the answers. We must discover voting records and hold officials accountable for their votes. Return power to the people. Take it away from special interests.

Regardless of Party designation, Corroon is one of the best leaders we have seen in a long time. RSL- What has he done? He's demonstrated fiscal responsibility. He's returned respectability back to his position. What hasn't he done? He hasn't been embroiled in ANY scandals involving mis-appropriation of County funds or making deals w/ unscrupulous developers. He hasn't snuggled up with special interests or made policy to benefit an elite few vs. the majority of "little guys". In short- he's EXACTLY what we need in all aspects of Utah government.

Horiuchi is the best

For many years I have felt the same way as "BBKing" above about the Dan Jones polls. The Deseret News - and its readers - would benefit if it ended its relationship with Dan Jones and started fresh with a new pollster.

To BBKing and Carl:

Before you hammer on Dan Jones & Assoc., remember there is someone who pays them to poll which determines the survey parameters. As most statisticians would know, you have to survey x number of people to get a reasonable margin of error. The more people you survey, the more expensive the poll is, the more time it takes & the lower the margin of error.

Before people call in to dump Dan Jones, I would urge Deseret News and KSL and others who use pollsters to pony up to get a realistic margin of error and an appropriate sample size so the poll results mean something.

Obviously, if the polling party wants a quick snapshot and a survey of 200 residents, the margin of error will be high, the sample size too low and the cost low but it can be done in a day or two.

Dan Jones just doesn't make this stuff up, somebody pays his company to survey. You get what you pay for.

I don't mean to "hammer on" Dan Jones or to "call in to dump" him either. But I do question whether the newspaper really does take the time and care to ensure its readers that its pollster does all it can to be accurate. Perhaps the newspaper does need to pay more money as one way to ensure better accuracy. It could also audit the polling company to (1) ensure that the calls he claims to have made were actually made, and (2) that the pollster's questions and the answers he receives truly reflect what he reports. Another practice that would give readers more confidence in the polls would be to use more than one pollster, and thereby keep any one pollster from becoming complacent. That's just good business practice. In any event, the newspaper could do much more to lend credence to its reports that are based on polls by outside companies.

I think that most of you need to wake up. Carroon was originaly against the funding for the idiot soccer stadium. But, he eventually supported it and helped to get it approved. Granted he got less taxpayer money committed, but taxpayer money is still being wasted on the project.

As far as Horiuchi. He needs to get a job in the private sector. He has been in politics and elected office almost as long as Orrin Hatch has. He is the epitome of sucking on the public teat.

Mike is the one who needs to get a job. The County Council is part time so Horiuchi must have another job. He works for a company that makes SBA loans. He helped a friend of mine get a loan from the SBA to build an auto repair shop. My friend loves Horiuchi.
