28 pounds is portable....unless you already have a 65 pound pack. I hope 24 volt batteries are easy to find in Iraq. This might be much more useful on the back of a firetruck/trailer where power and space requirements are not as critical.

How do you get a long capillary and a big old oven surrounding it to weigh in so low. If the capillary is too short, you can't really differentiate similar compounds. I think the word identify is incorrect, maybe he means identify as dangerous.

Nice work - we should be grateful that someone (or two) did this necessary piece of research. Reducing the size of mass spectrometers should be priority one as they have many, many applications not only against terrorism but also for health and the environment.
