I hope the neighboring communities also get a choice. I understand that if White City choose to annex into Sandy, those Sandy residents would have to pay sky high property taxes to correct the many years of neglect by Salt Lake County.

Townships are the worst possible form of municipal government. Urban areas should either incorporate or annex to receive urban services. As long as townships exist, Salt Lake County government will be distracted from its real job: providing rural and/or regional services. The notion of a consolidated City and County was rejected in favor of wall-to-wall cities in the 1970's. It is time to either do what was promised or return to the idea of consolidation (similar to Toronto), rather than continue to maintain the current convoluted mess.

Joe: Sandy's been working on a way to pass those costs directly to the residents of White City with a special improvement district. It's legally questionable, but since when has that stopped Mayor Dolan? I, for one, do not support the idea of annexation and if it happens, I'll be running against anyone in Sandy who supported it.

Can we, while we're discussing the nature of county government, discuss getting rid of Salt Lake County's at-large districts? Every single one of the County's at-large districts is occupied by a Salt Lake City resident, meaning Salt Lake City has 4 members on the 9 member council, when proportional representation would give them only 2. It is time for a more even distribution of power in county government.

South Salt Lake should merge into Millcreek, forming one incorporated city "Millcreek, Utah". I seem to remember this being one of the options given on the news. Then finally South Salt Lake could have it's own identity rather than sharing it's name with another city or being thought of as an appendage.

I live in Cottonwood Heights which incorporated/became a city about 3 years ago. Recently we just got our own police force and will be part of a new School district (the one breaking away from Jordan). And life is fine, I notice no hardships or whatnot as a result of breaking away from the county. As a city you have more local control and aren't at the whim of the county officials. Go for it Millcreek... incorporate and become Utah's newest city.
