Unfortunately I don't see the Cougars getting out of the first round. A lot of emotion was spent on not winning the conference tournament.
To Whatecer | 9:33 a.m. March 16, 2008
I'm not asking for a home game. That would be too easy.

Be realistic. How about a NEUTRAL FLOOR????
San Diego Fan | 9:43 a.m. March 16, 2008
Ban the alcohol at all sporting events! Like we've done on the beaches here in San Diego.
It works!
Isn't this obvious?

All i have to say is that if this game was played in Provo the last 2 years, it would have been blow-out wins for the Cougs, no questions asked...
Waaaa! | 9:55 a.m. March 16, 2008
It looks to me like Cummard and Plaisted's wife's need to learn a bit about good sportsmanship and restraint. There is no need for players family to go back and forth with opposing fans. Show some restraint and class and ignore the taunts. And to read that Cummard's wife got into it with a Utah TV cameraman because he was filming the brawl is laughable!

The tourney in Vegas is not fair, but instead of whining, go out a prove that you are a good team and win in a hostile environment. Enjoy your one and done NCAA tourney this week.
Anonymous | 9:57 a.m. March 16, 2008
I'm a Ute fan but have to be honest, I'm not surprised this happened after the game. Back in the late 90's I attended the MWC B-ball tourney when Utah played UNLV and my experience was that many of their fans were incredibly obnoxious, vile, and confrontational.

As much as I dislike some holier than thou BYU fans, I have to admit some UNLV fans are pretty bad in a more violent sort of way. At a minimum, the MWC should put a ban on beer sales during these games. I think intoxication contributes to some of the behavior I've witnessed down there in the past.

I like having the tourney in Vegas but they have to at least find a neutral floor on which to play this tourney. Both TCU & Utah would have won their games against UNLV on a non-partisan, neutral floor. The games were that close and both teams were victims of highly questionable calls down the stretch of both games. The BYU game was the only one UNLV seemed to win convincingly. They feed off the energy of their crowd and get calls even in the conference tourney they wouldn't on neutral floors.

Rushing the court and/or field after a contest should be a criminal offense. People have gotten seriously hurt. Give the police and ushers batons and tasers, and don't let anyone get away once they cross the lines. They should be arrested and face jail time.

And memo to MWC: eliminate the booze at the games. Getting a bunch of college kids and their parents liquored up for several hours, and then expecting them to listen to (or even understand) the instructions of the P.A. announcer seems very silly and naive. Booze has no place in a basketball arena, at any level.

By the way, there is no such thing as a home court advantage. Each team has just as much of a chance to win a game once the whistle blows. UNLV won twice, but it does not always happen that way. BYU got beat. The players are not making excuses - kudos to them for manning up.
Anonymous | 10:05 a.m. March 16, 2008
BYU fans are usually cry babies, as confirmed by this thread.
Hm . . . | 10:06 a.m. March 16, 2008
Storming the court/field doesn't equate to violence, beer throwing, etc. When BYU fans stormed the field, they did it simply to celebrate with the players (p.s. I personally would never do such a thing; it's far to high-schoolish). However, it seems that the "storming" done by UNLV fans included more than celebrating. It's fine if you all want to hoist your players on your shoulders--it is, after all, your home court--but when you push, yell, throw beer, swing your fists, taunt, and act like drunken frat boys, you really need to be put in your place, whether that's on your backside, in jail for a night, or pushing dishes in one of your casinos. It's sad that sports have turned into much more than friendly competition. Get a life!

(And please, don't throw out the the tired cliche, "hey, stop being holier than thou . . ." This is about sports)

hmmm | 10:02 a.m. March 16, 2008
what's the excuse going to be when they move the tourney, and BYU loses? Quit making excuses(as usual) and realize you got beat by the better team.
Literate | 10:04 a.m. March 16, 2008
Once again we see the poor leadership of the MWC in both location and security.

Security aside one has to understand that A) Las Vegas has the hotel rooms (ever stay at the palacial Super 8 in Laramie?) B) Thomas and Mack is literally 5 mins from the Las Vegas Airport. 3) it is probably a cost saving measure since Vegas is most "central" geographically.

The only other possible venue for the tourny would be San Diego and the Cox Arena. Perhaps the MWC Leadership should do a one year San Diego, one Year Las Vegas situation?

Good Luck Cougs! But Birmingham has never been a lucky court for us.
Rose | 10:16 a.m. March 16, 2008
Blame Rose for your lose. He played his starters for over 35 minutes in a blowout on the first day instead of conserving their energy for the finals. Nice coaching job.
reason | 10:16 a.m. March 16, 2008
EVERYONE COMPLAINS ABOUT EVERYONE ELSES FANS. THERE ARE MORONS EVERYWHERE. SOME OF THE FANS COMPLAINING ARE MORONS IN THE MIX. BYU HAS DIFFERENT CORE VALUES THAN THE REST OF THE FREE WORLD WHICH IS OK, BUT DON'T EXPECT EVERYONE ELSE TO COME TO PROVO FOR A TOURNAMENT AND NOT BE ABLE TO GET A BEER OR HAVE ACCEPTABLE ADULT FUN. IF YOU DON'T LIKE VEGAS, STAY HOME AND SHOW US YOUR VALUES. WE ARE ALL TIRED OF YOUR SELF RIGHTEOUS ATTITUDES. LIVE AND LET LIVE. UTAH DID THE SMART THING IN 2004 FOR FOOTBALL BY PROVIDING A WAY FOR THE FANS THE RUSH THE FIELD AND IT WAS DONE PEACEFULLY AND IS STILL A HIGHLIGHT SHOWN ON ESPN AND OTHER PLACES AS A VERY EXCITING HIGHLIGHT. ON THE OTHER HAND LOOK WHAT HAPPENED AT THE FIESTA BOWL THAT SAME YEAR WITH THE SAME FANS AND SUDDENLY THOSE FANS LOOK LIKE IDIOTS. TRUE HOUSE RULES ARE JUST THAT BUT COMMON SENSE BY THE HOUSE HELPS EVERYONE LOOK AND ACT APPROPRIATELY.

If the game was played in the Orem 14th ward gym, byu might have won.....
Whatever. Two years in a row shows UNLV was better.
byu fans are the most obnoxious on the planet, they don't win with class and never lose with class.
I find it amusing that the two most obnoxious fans in the MWC fought it out.
My money was on the unlv fans, they just seem tougher.
Get over it Cougar Fan | 10:15 a.m. March 16, 2008
I find it funny that BYU fan is giving UNLV fan advice on being classy.

That's like Bill Clinton giving monogamy advice to Eliot Spitzer.
NCBYUFanbut... | 10:22 a.m. March 16, 2008
Whatever happened to "what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas"??? Any "major" conference knows that beer and college basketball don't mix. But alas, the MWC in their quest to become a "major" conference slips farther down the ladder! If you need beer, casino's and show girls to draw fans instead of team support and tournament value then let's just have a kegger and send the winner to the NCAA. No wonder the Mtn. TV network can't get off the ground with this type of tournament behavior. So if we are going to keep the tournament in Vegas let's just call it the Mountain West Kegger and the loser gets a cracked skull! I'd laugh all the way back to NC is it wasn't so sad. Shame on you MWC!, Thomas and Mack!, BYU! and UNLV!. You acted like a bunch of ruffians, it was a disgrace to college basketball. One other thing. I will be thinking long and hard about spending money next year to come to this tournament. So if money instead of basketball is your reason for being in Vegas...mine is going somewhere else. I sure don't want to go home and take all the grief over this.
C | 10:24 a.m. March 16, 2008
GO INDEPENDANT

What would the Mountain West be without BYU? Honestly how many people say "Oh great! There is a UNLV game on TV!" Please go independant.
Uncle George | 10:25 a.m. March 16, 2008
Win the game and there would be no reason to complain.
Hey Jobbed again | 10:27 a.m. March 16, 2008
You sound really ignorant! If UNLV is the best team in the MWC, why didn't they win the conference this year. Yeah they won last night on their court, but they also lost more games than BYU throughout the season. So you tell me, who is the best team in the conference? Isn't it usually the team who wins the conference? UNLV has got to learn to win on the road to be the best team.
Bone Thugs ~N~ Harmony | 10:36 a.m. March 16, 2008
Well, at least one out of three ain't bad.

UNLV thugs. Gutless, clueless, tactless. Try sobriety for a change. Or at least moderation. As an occasional beer drinker and sports fan, I'm appalled, but not surprised.

Move the tourney to a more neutral setting. Maybe Reno?

And BYU fans, get off your high horses.
Rotating venues | 10:48 a.m. March 16, 2008
The MWC could easily rotate venues for the MWC Tournament. Albuquerque is good enough to hold an NCAA regional; they can manage a tournament. Salt Lake City has managed the NBA All-Star game. The Energy Solutions Arena would be just fine. San Diego has the Cox Arena, and then you could play in Vegas at the Orleans.

For now, let's just hope the tournament committee (that's you, Chris Hill) will take the silliness into account.

I remind you that UNLV has never accomplished anything in the conference tourney anywhere except the Thomas and Mack.
Vroman 00 | 10:52 a.m. March 16, 2008
I cannot believe my eyes. BYU complaining about the "home court advantage" of the UNLV Rebels?

Talk about hypocrisy! The team with the longest home-court advantage winning streak is whining because they claim someone else has an unfair home-court advantage!

Unbelievable!

OK, let's make a deal. BYU plays all its "home" games on a "neutral" court, and then the tournament can be played on a "neutral" court. Fair enough?
Spiderman Burns | 11:00 a.m. March 16, 2008
BYU, don't embarass yourselves by making excuses. Statistically, there is NO home court advantage for UNLV, especially in tournament play!

You just got beat. Admit it. UNLV outplayed you. Even Rose admits that. Denying it and making excuses is unbecoming and infantile. Grow up.
idahoanlostinutah... | 11:06 a.m. March 16, 2008
Homecourt is everything people! Utah Jazz at home, 28-3. Utah Jazz on the road, 16-21... I may not be a rocket scientist like the rest of you, but it seems to matter a bit. I have played ball most of my life, and I loved to play at home. But, what do I know??? The rushing the football field...it is a very valid point, but I didn't hear of any injuries due to that.
I Bleed Blue | 11:11 a.m. March 16, 2008
Hey People!

I'm LDS, a BYU grad. and I live in Las Vegas. We lost so get over it. This is a great place to have any sports event. It's a central location for the Mountain West and the climate can't be beat this time of year. There are rude people everywhere including Provo. I lived there most of my life. You people knocking Las Vegas is way out of line. 'Magic' didn't happen this time except for Wink Adams. Move on.
GL | 11:13 a.m. March 16, 2008
I live in Vegas - the fans here are not worse or better that SLC, Provo or Wyo. The incident was due to BYU fans feeling slighted that UNLV fans wanted to storm the court. But why stop it anyway? Is is that big a problem? I have seen Cougars storm courts/fields on numerous occasions. Both sides had irresponsible fans.

I do agree that we need a neutral site (MGM Garden?). But Vegas is the best locations for the conference. And even on a neutral court, Vegas probably would have won yesterday. 15 points is not all explained by homecourt.

Anonymous | 11:34 a.m. March 16, 2008
The BYU fans I ran into acted horrible. I am LDS and a UNLV fan. I was embarassed at the way most were acting. I was also embarassed at the actions of a few UNLV fans. However, the BYU fans were way, way out of line. Horrible article by a church owned newspaper. Show some class and humility.
liloldlobo | 11:35 a.m. March 16, 2008
Let the whining begin BYU lost, from someone who has attended Lobos games in SLC and Provo UNLV thugs? have nothing on rude, whiny, self rightous bigots i've sat near at BYU. Shut up you all sound like the biggest BYU whiner Danny (cry baby) Ainge.
By the way how did the UNLV court beat the Utah women? The Lady Lobos won 5 of 6 on neutral courts an because of outstanding fan support will be playing Thursday night in the PIT in the NCAAs.
Support your team quit complaining you lost.
As far as losing goes where were the Cougar (co) POY and Plaisted? Way overrated Nevill Adams and Giddens showed their stuff.
Orleans Arena | 11:41 a.m. March 16, 2008
If they want to keep the tourney in Vegas to make $ and get fans out, why don't they play the games at the Orleans arena, where it is nobody's home court? If it's good enough for the NBA Allstars, it should be good enough for the MWC.
Re: Re: Jobbed again | 11:53 a.m. March 16, 2008
Tue, Jan 15 BYU at UNLV L 41-70
Sat, Feb 16 UNLV at BYU W 74-48
Sat, Mar 15 BYU at UNLV L 61-76

It's glaringly obvious that if the game had been played in the Marriot Center, BYU would have won. Since BYU won the regular season championship, if any team should have had home court advantage it should have been BYU the last two years. The only other option fair option is playing on a neutral court.

When Utah or SDSU or New Mexico wins the conference, but gets excluded from the NCAA tourney because they lose to UNLV on their home court in the MWC tourney, we'll here plenty of complaints from the other teams. Until then, it's simply BYU fans complaining, whining, crying, whatever...
bias | 12:05 p.m. March 16, 2008
That was a ridiculously biased and one sided account of what took place. BYU fans throwing sodas, hats, and cursing at fans. A BYU player's wife taking it upon herself to stop fans from rushing the court. These things instigated the violence. THose, and the MWC's poor decision to put the barricade in place. This paper should be ashamed
Get Real | 12:07 p.m. March 16, 2008
Most confrence tournaments are held at the same location for several years in a row. Winning teams fans almost always rush the floor without injuries. BYU fans would have done the same if they would have won and they almost had the same number of fans there, so not much of an advantage.
b y who??? | 12:02 p.m. March 16, 2008
byu fans dont complain your fans are just the same as everyone else obnoxious and annoyin get a little taste of your own medicine
Anonymous | 12:27 p.m. March 16, 2008
The MWC is a joke and will be until they hold the tournament in a nuetral city. Fire Craig Thompson!
sdt | 12:31 p.m. March 16, 2008
This game will never be played in Provo or Albuquerque, or San Diego. So, get over it. The only "fair" place is on a non conference member's court: the Orleans in Las Vegas or the Delta Center in SLC. This is significant because fan base has more impact on the outcome of a college basketball game than any other sport, college or pro.

While it is true that fans rushed the football field at the LV Bowl, their behavior was far different than after this basketball game. For one, fans were told not to come onto the basketball court and the "security" wasn't prepared for it. Also, space restrictions create higher emotions that open spaces. Finally, there was a matter of alcohol consumption, without which, many of the fans at the T&M would not have behaved as they did.

Last time you guys made it pass the second round. Good Luck! Next year-it's not going to matter where it's played because we're going to beat three times not two. Check out our recruting class. 7-0 Beas Hamga-#5 Center in the country.

Thack | 12:36 p.m. March 16, 2008
The fact remains that the MWC is NOT a major athletic conference. That means the tournament needs to make money, and money means they have to hold it at a location where people want to go. They tried the Pepsi Center with minimal success--and why would you want to travel to Denver in the winter? That leaves Vegas and San Diego as "desirable" wintertime conference locations. All MWC schools except for BYU have mostly regional interest, and BYU's alumni interest is spread very thin throughout the country. Having UNLV be near the top of the conference and in the NCAA tournament in basketball is GOOD for the conference at large. People, its about money. The other schools are just going to have to figure out a way to win in Vegas...
jim b. cedar city | 12:40 p.m. March 16, 2008
There should be no BEER allowed during the MVC tournament. I grew up in Las Vegas and saw first hand how Rebel fans can get smashed during football and basketball games. Not very comfortable having beer all over you when fans get excited or to catch a whiff of their breath when they get right up to your face. Granted, most UNLV fans are alright, but it seems those few make to rest look bad. And yes BYU fans can get out of hand as well. Look, we both love our teams and get into the game as well as anybody else and get out of hand at times. But sportsmanship should be our number one goal. Remember the golden rule.
UNLV= no class | 12:45 p.m. March 16, 2008
UNLV fans you have no excuse for your behavior after the game. Band members should not be tackled and shoved to the ground. Wives should not be attacked, verbally or physically. If this is how a city hosts a tounrament, it's time to move the tournament.
Home Court = 10pts | 12:53 p.m. March 16, 2008
BYU beats UNLV by ~ 30 on their homecourt and UNLV wins by ~ 30 on their homecourt. To call it 10 pts is to be incompetent. To all those that say BYU never wins on the road. Most teams, even premier teams (ex Mich St), struggle on the road. BYU went 6-2 in conference on the road. That is two games better than 4-4 UNLV.
Re: SLC'er | 12:52 p.m. March 16, 2008
Or in other words, ute fan. You need to put your stereotypes away and looked at what happened. When the opposing team needs a police escort and tournament offcials know whats going to happen before it happens, I think it's more than your take on BYU fans. Harmon reported what happened he didn't throw blame, he reported what he saw. That's not biased, that's reporting. BYU fans are completely justified in describing UNLV fans hoodlums or European soccer fans, one in the same.

Please tell me why a team and it's fan deserve what happened for being, "self righteous and loud". That description fits every team that has a rabid fan base.
coach | 1:00 p.m. March 16, 2008
So, a UNLV fan attacks a 70 year old usher and BYU fan's run in to stop him from more danger. This one fan could have started a riot that could still be giong on if he would have swung at the BYU fans. But the actions of those BYU fan's wwere nothing short of an heroic attempt to save perhaps a man's life. Who in their right mind is going to watch someone get beat down to death. Who know's what that fan could have done to the usher; making $8.50 an hour!
Who needs the police when the Stripling Warriors are there to protect you? Kudos out to those fans for stepping in when no police was around.
R | 1:10 p.m. March 16, 2008
Don't put all the blame on UNLV fans. BYU fans are some of the worst in the nation. Their "we're holier than thou" attitude definitely isn't humble. And wow, look at those BYU wives "two rings, two rings." Are you kidding me? Immature on both sides.
Wow | 1:12 p.m. March 16, 2008
Once again the MWC shines.

Was Craig Thompson there to hand out a trophy???

Why do people make such a big deal about a brawl after the game? Did anyone catch this year's highschool sports season? Is it highschool athletes growing up without any accountability, or college athletics setting the example?

Moving here from out of state two years ago, I can really observe that sports in this area of the country is messed up.(And before anyone gives me the Utah cliche', I'm not moving away, I paid for my house, vote here and have the right to point that out).

Cummard and Plaisteds wives???
TJ | 1:17 p.m. March 16, 2008
Oh Dick, give me a break. A little sour are you about losing again to a team with inferior talent?
Please DICK! | 1:21 p.m. March 16, 2008
You sound like my mom complaining about how obnoxious fans of a rival school can be. Act like a man Dick and stop crying.
re:R | 1:17 p.m. March 16, 2008
Wouldn't have happened at the Marriot Center.

Hey, and don't you think there is a bit of difference between a "perceived" "holier than thou" attitude" and a brawl?
Robert | 1:25 p.m. March 16, 2008
From a BYU and UNLV fan. I am sorry to say, especially being LDS, but BYU fans whine way to much. They complain because the game is held in Vegas, yet half the fans at the games are BYU fans. Why because there are thousands of LDS BYU fans in Vegas, just like me. I loved rushing the field when BYU won the Vegas Bowl this year and when they beat Wyoming a few years ago and UNLV fans should be able to rush the court when they win. STOP your whining! BYU has a huge following all over the country, that is a huge advantage that other colleges in our conference to get have.
Utah fan | 1:31 p.m. March 16, 2008
Sorry to see such behavior. It is time for the pathetic MWC leadership to stop giving UNLV home court advantage every year and start heading to neutral sites or rotating between amoung the various schools. Might hurt their gambling but who cares anymore about the MWC leadership, they mess up everything they touch.......Remember the TV contract that several areas in the Conference Could not get.
UofU Alum | 1:48 p.m. March 16, 2008
For years people complained to get the U and the Y out of the WAC. Well, they got their wish. Maybe the answer now is to make the MWC great. That begins with great leadership making great decisions. Let's clean house and do this right. Or is it too late?
