Great but lucky win. The MTN needs to get their producer to focus on the game and stop with the stupid shots of the crowd while they are missing action on the court. Hold serve and meet UNLV in the finals of the tourney. Go Cougs and Rebels!
witnesstoacrime | 12:50 a.m. Feb. 27, 2008
It is shameful not to even mention the near decapitation of Giddens at the end of the game. I have heard the "let them play line" before but not when Plaisted could have been charged with aggravated assault. The Cougars, to be sure, deserve credit for pulling out the win. But any objective writer would at least acknowledge the assist from the officials. Proof positive that the Deseret News unambashedly serves the blue Kool-Aid to their loyal and myopic BYU fan readers.
Lobolo fans | 1:20 a.m. Feb. 27, 2008
UNM fans are the worst in the Nation. You stink. Throwing stuff on your own arena? I can only wonder what you do on your own front lawn. You played as well as you could, good job Lobo players. I think the NCAA ought to sanction the fan base of UNM and force the UNLV/UNM game to be held without any fans present. A sanction is just what the lobo fans need.
And then when the NCAA is done, the MWC can sanction and penalize the scorekeepers for their obvious dishonest foul keeping on Cummard. What punishment is enough when some homey lies about the records they are sworn to keep? Steve Alford should take the Indiana job....you Lobo fans certainly don't deserve anyone with class. You may have just buried your own program. Really, when Alford leaves, what coach with class will want to coach in the PIT with mob like fans who break NCAA rules of throwing objects on the court, with no character and less class? Disgusting.

Not only does he hits clutch free throws, he gets away with another mobbing at the end of a game(The other time was the SDSU game at home)Where was the call? I'd be mad if I was a lobo fan.
Jon Vandermyde | 1:36 a.m. Feb. 27, 2008
Holy cow, what a game!!This was great preparation for BYU going into the big dance. It proved that Plaisted can keep his cool, and that BYU can actually play without Lee Cummard (at least 7 minutes anyways...). Go Cougs!
Nyron | 3:16 a.m. Feb. 27, 2008
Games like this one is what makes champions. True, we did not play our best, but the bench came through and filled in for the starters. We have plenty of work to do, but this should spring board us into the MWC tourney and help us win it.
Anonymous | 4:08 a.m. Feb. 27, 2008
Great game cougs!

Trent making two free throws was the perfect ending. One they yewts obviously hate reading some of the comments above.

That's o.k. Good luck in the NIT yewt fans.

Oh wait. They probably won't even make the NIT.

There is always gymnastics.
Fan x 2 | 4:37 a.m. Feb. 27, 2008
What a heart stopping game! Although we'e glad we won, we were left with a confused bad taste in our mouths. When the Refs reviewed the last real play of the game, why didn't they explain their ruling? Maybe they were trying to avoid a riot. We didn't realize the fans were throwing things onto the floor.
Laughing | 5:33 a.m. Feb. 27, 2008
... And among Ute-fans there was again weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth.

So many demons to exorcise, so little time. BYU beats UNM, and you tormented Ute fans come out in soliloquy with every conceivable, tearful, blubbery theory about why justice was travestied.

Whine on you crazy diamonds...

Conference Champs??? | 6:15 a.m. Feb. 27, 2008
A one point win in overtime.

Wow, so color me not impressed.

The kewgs are vulnerable and have to get through the Utes to win tounrey time. It won't happen on a neutral court in Vegas, trust me.

The utes are playing the best ball in the conference right now, the best coaching staff, and have the most skilled team top to bottom.

Enjoy your day because it won't last.

Cewg basketball, just like cewg football is a flooke, no quality wins.

Sessions | 6:19 a.m. Feb. 27, 2008
As to the pro-blue morning news not reporting on a supposed foul by BYU at the end, neither did the Tribune, Foxsports,or even the Lobo's own webpage quoting AP, all of which I don't think are too pro-BYU. Another example of LDS bashing?
hey witnesstoacrime | 6:22 a.m. Feb. 27, 2008
Grab a towel and bite down hard. You'll get through this. You're an obvious BYU hater, and you must have been in the depth of agony to see BYU pull this one out. I would have loved to see the look on your face when Plaisted made those two free throws. Hilarious indeed.
Doug | 6:26 a.m. Feb. 27, 2008
Talk about the refs! How about giving the Lobos .1 sec to try to win!
BoiseBlue | 6:32 a.m. Feb. 27, 2008
Hey "witnesstoacrime", at least get your facts straight. It wasn't Giddens who the announcers said was fouled at the end, it was the other guard - Jamal Smith. He caught the rebound after a wild shot attempt (by Gary I believe). With .1 left on the clock he had the ball knocked out of bounds, then got raked across the neck by Plaisted. I was somewhat surprised that no call was made, but I think the refs were hesitant to put someone on the free throw line with 0.1 seconds on a foul that didn't affect the players chance at making the shot. You are correct that the article probably should have mentioned it.
Re: Conference Champs??? | 6:52 a.m. Feb. 27, 2008
Ha ha ha ha ha. Yewt fans are so funny. Utes the best team in the conference. LOL. That's a good one. Have fun watching us in March.
Great win | 6:47 a.m. Feb. 27, 2008
But the conference champs to be will still lose the tourney because they have to play it on a poorer team's home court.

That will cost BYU a higher seed in the NCAAs and they will bow out in the first round ... again.

Sound like deja vu?
intoxicated u fan | 6:59 a.m. Feb. 27, 2008
if ute fan is complaining about the reffing, did he noticed Cummard fouled out, did he notice Plaisted getting mugged all game long, how 'bout the charges on NM all night long trying to break down the defense. It's obvious who is being myopic here.

Way to go Cougs, you cute litte CHAMPIONS!
Amazing! | 7:08 a.m. Feb. 27, 2008
Wow! Way to go cougs! This is a great win! Whats so funny is that it hurts the U of boohoo more than NM fans. I love it! It's so fun to watch bottom dwelling boohoo fans post on a BYU win. I can just hear them now, "At least we have a gymnastics team better than yours! You go girls!"

BYU beat you on YOUR floor and their floor
your football AND basketball team the past two years not only chokes but just doesn't have the depth to hang with the leaders of the mountain

loosers should shut up and stop butting in on articles that are NOT about them and their hate of BYU or the LDS church.

Plaisted | 7:25 a.m. Feb. 27, 2008
Well, I guess Plaisted is now ready for the NBA eh? 5-9 from the line is still not good. He got lucky he actually had a free throw shooting streak. Probably the first time he made 2 in a row.
Here come the excuses... | 7:20 a.m. Feb. 27, 2008
Just like after BYU beat Utah in football last year, new mexico fans are crying about the officiating!!! I would like to make the same statement that was made so many times back in November...you had your chance to stop BYU! It's funny how certain fans that do not know much about the sport itself and believe that one play or one shot makes all the difference when in actuality the lobos had so many chances to pull away or finish the game. They just were not good enough to handle the Cougs, even on their home court!
to the Dorks in Red | 7:29 a.m. Feb. 27, 2008
It is nice to see that yewts still have something to say, and like always it is not nice. Suck it up you lost and will continue to loose to BYU. You will forever be in the Shadow of the Team in Blue. This will go on and on. You may get lucky for maybe 4 years at best, but that is it.

Claim that you and everyone else is miss treated but in the end a Win, close or not is a Win! and while a win over ywets is just another win it some how tastes sweeter.
We downed a half-gallon........ | 7:25 a.m. Feb. 27, 2008
.........of good Kool-Aide after the game & "Had a good time of it. Good feelings prevailed." Also, Cummard only had 4 fouls when they disqualified him. That could have cost us the game. The Utes have lost to us 2wice and if we play them again it will be 3ice. BYU is going dancing and we will go 32 or 16. BYU is #25 in the nation now...... what is UTAH? Like it or not BYU IS BACK and if not for Roggy Boy (Reid) and his kids, BYU would have never left. We're going to the Air Force game with Glen Tuckett, and we are going to do some dark fudge almond ice cream before the game. Cougs will down the fleet.

RE: Conference Champs??? | 7:34 a.m. Feb. 27, 2008
Dude, you sound like an idiot. You say the Cougars don't have any quality wins? I guess you are saying the Utes are not a quality team. Also, the Utes are "playing the best ball in the conference right now?" Didn't BYU just beat them a week ago and New Mexico beat them on Saturday. That is two losses in a row for the team that is playing the best in the conference huh? I am sure glad I am not a Ute fan right now because that was just about the stupidest comment I have ever read.
Deliverance | 7:34 a.m. Feb. 27, 2008
Bailed out again by the men in stripes. It will have to become embarrassing even to Provoans soon.

How could anyone who knows college basketball criticize Lobo fans? New Mexico basketball fans have proven themselves to be some of the best and most loyal in the country. They are a great asset to the conference. I'm pretty sure most MWC teams would trade fans bases with them in a second. Throwing stuff every once in a while after bad calls, while unsportsmanlike, doesn't erase years of being great fans.

Last Call | 7:40 a.m. Feb. 27, 2008
You guys forget they weren't reviewing a foul at the end. Take a look at the ref he was pointing UNM ball. If they were going to review a foul they would also have to review the shot where the UNM players feet slid (which is a travel). Also, dude was just flying in and caught an arm. 20 seconds earlier the same thing had happened when Trent corraled an in bounds save and got hit with no call. Lastly, what was with the poor flopping by UNM. They must have had 10 flops that were just ridiculous.

Agree with Conference Champs?? | 7:46 a.m. Feb. 27, 2008
Finally we have someone who makes some sense. Yes Utah is playing the best basketball in this conference. Utah has the best players, the best coaches and fans.

The recent home losses to New Mexico, BYU and Air Force were all anomilies. We will win the conference championship, the conference tournament and the NCAA Tournament, just like 1944 baby!

bigmontanan | 7:48 a.m. Feb. 27, 2008
Are you guys kidding about the ref homering UNM? They took BYU's best player out of the game on a scorer's error!!!! He only had 4 fouls!!! I hope that somebody's butt gets kicked for that one. They are lucky BYU won because that would have been a huge controversy. Also to Conference Champs??? you are hilarious dude. Any time a team wins in the Pit they have done a nice job. I admit that the cougars don't look dominant, but you don't need to be dominant, you just need to win. Which they obviously have done better than the Utes this year.
86 the .mtn | 7:55 a.m. Feb. 27, 2008
I don't know if I can stand to listen/watch another game on this stupid .mtn channel. The play by play is absolutely atrocious. They don't know anything about basketball. They call the game by emotion, instead of fairly. At the end of the game one of the announcers says that there are people in prison that did things worse than the supposed foul on Trent Plaisted....ridiculous. First off, he actually tipped the ball out of bounds before this supposed foul. Secondly, it looked like a flop to me.
I almost don't even want to watch any more games (if there even are any more on TV) this year until we get into the tourney and can watch them on CBS where the play by play is a million times better. Oh, and whats with hearing everything the lobo fans behind you are saying the entire game? Dont you people know how to adjust microphones???

As I recall...The Utes just lost on their own home court to the very same New Mexico team BYU in turn managed to beat on New Mexico's own court last night. Last I checked the standings they were dropping back down into the middle of the conference standings. How is that playing the best ball in the conference right now? Or maybe you've just been away for the last week.

So far the Utes have only proved that they are mediocre at best. I will concede that Boylen is getting more out of them than Coach Ray did though.
RE: Conference Champs ??? | 8:08 a.m. Feb. 27, 2008
You're right. Whenever a team takes a loss from it's rival and on it's home floor in the next, that means they are the hottest team in the conference. M I C K E Y M O U S E, GO UTES.
New Mexico has............... | 8:11 a.m. Feb. 27, 2008
great fans. BYU has a darn good team and coach. BYU is aweful at free throws. Plaisted is worse. Cummard is the best player on the team & in the conference. Jimmer is a stud. Plaisted can be great at times. Lee is always there. BYU has good ice cream. The Ute fans are whiners. UNLV could be scary in the tourney. Tark is unemployed. The Jazz need a CENTER. The deserted News and Tribune write the same articles on the same day. Springtime is coming. We will see some flooding. Billary Clinton will not win the White House. Dick Vitale sounds aweful. The Utes will not win the conference for a looooooooooong time.
Killshaw | 8:15 a.m. Feb. 27, 2008
What a great win for this team in overtime with our best player on the bench with 4 fouls. This experience will help these young players in the future.

We drank Koolaid after the game at our house also. Then we went outside and looked at the stars.
Cougar | 8:18 a.m. Feb. 27, 2008
Remember my prediction of yesterday. We are going to the Final Four and Cummard and Plaisted will both be lotery picks in tne NBA. I think this Cougar team rivals the best Mountain West or WAC teams of all time. Nothing can stop us short of poor officiating or beating ourselves.
funny ute fans | 8:23 a.m. Feb. 27, 2008
It's a great joy reading all the comments from Utah and BYU fans. Once in a while, a fan from one school or the other makes a good comment, but usually the comments are far too biased to consider with a straight face. But Utah fans, the article is about the BYU-New Mexico game, why do you have to claim you are the hottest team in the conference (when you are clearly not, and your team is on a 2-game losing streak) and why do you say Utah will beat BYU on a neutral floor (when BYU beat Utah in Provo and Salt Lake)? Are you saying a neutral floor is more valuable than your own court? And rather than complain about BYU's perceived luck, why not teach Kepkay to count and ask the coach not let him attempt the last shot of a game. I recently read that he has attempted a crucial last-second shot four times and came up empty four times. Your team has some problems, and a 6-6 conference record is no reason to be smug.
Whatever | 8:35 a.m. Feb. 27, 2008
Did BYU not beat the Utes on their own floor? Did New Mexico also beat the Utes in Salt Lake? -- albeit only because of a dumb play by a JUNIOR point guard. Bring em on again.
Better get past your first round opponent -- UNLV or New Mexico before you start bragging abount how you will beat BYU.
Too funny | 8:39 a.m. Feb. 27, 2008
Growing up in Albuquerque, all I can say is nothing has changed....Lobo fans are rude and nasty. It is a reflection of Alb being a very violent and rough place.

Secondly, Yoots, are you still talking? LOL

GO COUGS!

Champions | 8:43 a.m. Feb. 27, 2008
A win is a win is a win. I love the crying fans from UNM and LBUN classic case of envy and spite. I can understand why other teams hate when they can see no end it site of the BYU dominance in both football and basketball. It must be very frustrating!!! Great job cougars, "life is great at the top of the Mountain"!!!
The Truth | 9:01 a.m. Feb. 27, 2008
So, all that say that Plaisted Hacked Jamal Smith at the end of the game are wrong, he ran into Plaisted, who was only trying to get the rebound, plus if you go back there was a lot of calls that weren't called that should of been, such as Fredete getting fouled on the last play of regualation, so it all even outs in the end.
Way to go Cougars!!!!
Kent | 9:07 a.m. Feb. 27, 2008
Nice 'D', J.T. With Lee out of the game J.T. did a great job of chasing, denying and staying in front of JR.
coachc | 9:08 a.m. Feb. 27, 2008
winning is as much an attitude as it is a culture as it is talent and coaching. Right now BYU has established that attitude and culture in basketball, football, track and volleyball. Games like last night are proof positive of that. Not even talk-radio can twist a win into a loss---well, they will try. Pretty much anyone who finds something wrong with BYU at this point is grabbing at straws and averting the win by pointing to either a no-call or the one-point win or some other red herring.
