What is there to study? Do we study all criminals before we prosecute them for
breaking laws? No. Only the illegal aliens need to be studied but its not what
they really mean. What this study wants to do is delay any actions against
illegals and on businesses employing them. We have had this issue under study
for over 20 years now so how much longer does it take? These criminal illegals,
all of them and their families, must be confronted by law enforcement and
enforce all laws. America cannot turn a blind eye and hope the problem goes away
and that the american people will accept the criminal actions against their live
and lively hood forever. The american people are the victims of illegal aliens
and our legislators have been acting long enough to aid and abet the actions of
employers and the use of illegal aliens in the work force. The people of Utah
are fed up with no action policies. If the governor wants to do a study, look at
the benefits and cost reductions to government and social programs and
education. Illegal Mexicans do not want citizenship, only to freeload, rob, and
steal from Americans

The immigration issue is a tough one for conservatives. It pits their two
defining traits against each other, fear and greed. The issue of immigration is
primarily economic. "Illegals" want to feed their families, and
American businesses want cheap, compliant labor. All the deportations, and
fences, in the world won't solve the problem as long as there are jobs in
this country for "illegals",

Just what part of ILLEGAL is it that our legislators don't understand? If
this issue does not get some drastic teeth in it, we out here have an option
come election time. You better make sure what ever you are about to study gets
done in this session or alot of you will be attending gatherings in the future
at a different location than the state capital building in a couple years. Watch
this one VOTERS.

I don't know who Dan Jones polled, but I know from personal experience that
the vast majority of citizens in this state are against illegal immigration and
want the problem solved now, not in 6 months, not in 6 years. Here's the
deal. Business owners who have been using cheap illegal labor for years, and who
contribute to politicians campaign chests, are putting pressure on these
politicians to go against the will of the American people. They think if they
stall long enough, we'll just get tired and go away. Not this time.

A study? Throw millions of dollars at a study? This is what makes people
distrust and despise government (and their partners in crime in the local media)
MAybe we can put all the legislators on a plane to western Europe and they can
see firsthand how well multiculturalism and unrestricted immigration works out.

Since I never seem to be where the polls are - I have one question - Why did I
pay the price to be a legal immigrant when the doors are now wide open for the
new slaves of America. The reason the politicians and businesses don't
want to do anything is because they are making money of the back of the ILLEGAL
ALIANS please note they are NOT IMMIGRANTS, they have not immigrated here they
have stolen across the border, they have stolen legal American citizens ID etc.

Send the illegals home so we could put the money spent on illegals for education
and healthcare to the poor LEGAL citizens in our own country. We really need to
start putting money into the inner city schools. Has anyone been to Atlanta,
Houston, or Memphis lately. Their inner cities need help bad. Tax payers have to
pay the burden for the business' who reap all the rewards. Our country is
in a recession, its time to take care of our own. Illegals broke the law coming
here and many of them steal social security numbers also. I dont have sympathy
for illegals.

As an American westerner I have nothing against Latin-American immigrants. They
have always been creative and colorful parts of my life. Only fools would reject
such charming and energetic persons. We self-proclaimed Christians are the ones

All the problems with illegal migrants stem from their leagal status. Make them
leagal and all of these problems resolve themselves. Provide a way for them to
become leagal, through paying a fine or taxes and stop new immigrants by
slapping a major fine on the employers who hire illeagals and the problem will
be solved.

I agree with the study. This is the way to go. Utahns are finally waking up to
what is moral and the right thing to do. Just because the extremist are loud
doesn't mean the rest of Utah feels the same way. The extremist remind me
of Germany before World War II, blame the Jews for everything.
Althoug illegal immigrants are braking the law, the law can be changed. How many of you have broken the speed limit law? Most I'm sure. That doesn't make you a criminal.
I don't think illegal immigrants are using public benefits. Those people are scared of being reported and deported. Why would they go to a place where they could be deported? It doesn't make sense.
Or are they refering to the children illegal immigrants are having here who are Americans? If this is the case, those children have the right. Maybe this is racism pure and simple.

So Utahns are divided on the "Migrant" issue?(euphemism for illegal
alien). I think this depends on who takes the poll. KSL and The Deseret Morning
News have the same corporate bosses, and they have a definite agenda of their
own. This looks like a case of using a poll created to push an agenda. I
don't trust it. I doubt it feels right to many of you either.
The legislators know that the people want something done now! Just look at the bills that have passed through the House where they are more in touch with the people than the Senate. The voters will see that pushing any of these bills into SB97 (Jenkins) by the Senate will be the same as voting against them. The people want action now, and the Senators know it, but some of them think the voters are fools.
Utah is a sanctuary state, and that needs to change. By enabling illegal immigration in Utah we become part of the national problem. We are as much a part of the problem as the federal government.

One wonders where those numbers would stand if so many people weren't being
mislead by their religious leaders. It stood at 63% - before the Mormon Church
came out and called for "compassion," mostly towards wealthy Mormons
like the Marriotts, Ivorys, Fultons, Peerys, and Holdings, all of whom rely on
cheap immigrant labor and rapid population growth to keep their bank accounts
fat.
One also wonders where that vote would stand if the media were more honest. Just a week ago this paper reported that Lake Powell could be empty by 2021 thanks to "growing demand." If the DMN had been honest they would've acknowledged that the source of that growing demand was rapid immigration, which is responsible for 82% of this nation's population growth.
It's also why we're not getting a tax cut this year - immigration eventually creates more government costs than it pays for (roads, schools, water, etc.)

I agree with Spanky. I do not know anyone who does not want something done about
illegal immigration. They seem compassionate about legal immigration, but their
is very strong opposition to illegal immigrants. Even liberals I know want
something done about this issue and done now. I really wonder who they are

My ancestors immigated to this country legally,and struggled to survive without
social support. They became good citizens fought and some died for this country.
I resent handouts given to law breakers. We who are citizens obey the law, why
should someone who has broken it get special priviledge. Kick them out and level

What a farce! The illegals need to be dealt with. A good example this week of an
illegal alien from Mexico driving a school bus in Minnesota who ran a stop sign
and killed four of the students she was driving. She didn't even have a
driver's license!!!
I hope the families of the dead students sue the state for every dime in their treasury. The people who a delaying dealing with these people had better try to wash the blood from their hands because they are as guilty as the offender.

Turn off the illegal immigration magnet! It is destroying our healthcare system,

The simple answer is that Utahns don't have to wait for the Legislature to
do what is right. We can always organize a citizen's initiative or
proposition to put the teeth back in SB81. It is time for private employers to
be held liable for hiring illegals. If there are no jobs, the illegals
won't stay.

I see that most of these comments are just as "reactionary" as the
legislative thought that absorbs our legislature. Illegals are well, illegal
and therefore breaking the law and should be punished for that. Have any of
you taken the time to ask why illegals are well, illegal? The immigration law
itself which limits the legality is a broken system of hodge-podge arbitrariness
and has historically been based on political winds rather than any rational
thoughts.

This proposed "study" is just a stall and a cover for politicians to

The article does not correctly portray the results of the poll -- 47% say do
something to discourage ILLEGAL immigration. 46% say study the problem (i.e. do
nothing). The Governor, the business community, the LDS and other churches and
a growing number of legislators say show compassion (i.e. do nothing. Utah is a
sanctuary state and it looks like it is going to stay that way.

I'm sorry, but why have I stopped trusting the Deseret News on articles
about illegal immigration? Every single one of them has been for maintaining the
status quo, letting illegals get away with their criminal actions. I'm not
talking about editorials either, although most of their "news" stories

examine how stringent they are now. Think of how likely your ancestors would
have been allowed into this country under current immigration laws before you
decry the actions of others. Be wary about casting stones at others if you

What arrogance! You study the immigration laws. My father came to America
legally during WWII. Then fought for this country and killed for this country.

Late 1800's, from Ireland during the potato famine. 12 applied, 7 made the trip 9 years later. The laws now are stringent because of all the illegal people already in the country. The illegals are taking the place of people from Asia, India, Europe and other countries that have just as much of a right to come here. That is selfish. You should be teaching patience instead of justify lawbreaking.

didn't get the results they wanted on the first poll so they led the
"compassion" charge and are now patting themselves on the back that we
have all now "come around" to their ridiculous idea of wanting
illegals on a path to citizenship. What a crock! The logic that we should purue
a stacked study group to determine whether or not we should enforce our own
immigration laws is so stupid it defies description. Why don't we study the

I am a native born Utahan and a Veteran of the Armed Forces. And I am appalled
at the Immigration Laws that have been proposed and are being discussed on
Capital Hill. I wish to point out two things:
First, having fought for American Freedom and for the Freedom of other nations, I am sickened and dismayed that anyone who would call themselves Freedom-lovers would be willing to oppress and intentionally vanquish an already exploited people. That is not what I put my life on the line for and it worries me that anyone could so completely misunderstand what America Stands for and what it means to be an American.
Second, as a student of the law, it is incredible that anyone can legitimately reason that forcing children from lower income homes to pay higher prices for education is going to add to Utah�s coffers, or �save� Utah taxpayers money. It should be clear that it will perpetuate poverty and increase crime in Utah. Likewise, taking away people�s drivers licenses will not stop them from driving, it will only stop them from obtaining insurance. Is anyone out there ready to get in a wreck with an �uninsured� motorist?

To those of you so "fed up" with illegal immigrants I ask you to take
a step back & consider all of the things that illegal immigrants might have
done to make your lives better. Consider that house you bought a few years
back, who did all the frame work, poured the foundation, put up the sheet rock,
installed the flooring? Don't go accusing businesses of being the only
beneficiaries of cheap labor if you benefit as well. I mean when was the last
time you made a purchase at wal-mart (I bet you were against them building a
store in your town huh)? It's funny how your opinion can change when your
life is made easier by the very thing you oppose. Bob at 11:50 this morning was
outraged that an "illegal" bus driver got in an accident that killed
several people. Guess what Bob, I see paramedics all the time at accident
scenes that I go past & this will come as a shock but...most of the time
it's white people involved. Of course they're probably just from
Europe. Let's find a way to help people become legal residents so they can
escape their own impoverished lands.

(very large) for refusing to hire me because I don't speak spanish. Why the
heck do I need to speak spanish - I was born here their customers were not in

My grandparents came here from England and Germany. They went to Ellis Island
in New York, where they were examined and had to produce documents. If they did
not meet the LEGAL IMMIGRATION requirements it would have been a long boat ride
back across the Atlantic. That is the way it should always be. Plus, we
don't have to have immigrants if we don't want them. At some point we
need to close the door, and maybe open it up when we deem to.

Spanish, German, French, English, Russian or ASL. The Courts have already ruled
that a company has the right to determine what, if any, languages its employees
must speak. It's no more illegal or discriminatory to choose to hire
someone who speaks Spanish than it's illegal to not hire someone who
doesn't speak English.
Furthermore, why should someone who doesn't speak another language be given more consideration than someone who is as qualified as them when the other candidate speaks another language that benefits the employer. People spend a lot of money and resources improving their marketability and yet self-centered people feel they are entitled to a job that someone else is more qualified for.
You ask "why the heck do I need to speak Spanish." I will answer the question for you. Because the employer wants someone who knows another language and those who do shouldn't be discriminated against when our skills more closely match the companies than yours skills. It's wrong to be denied employment when someone spent a lot of time and money learning another language because the company is afraid to be sued.

Only problems on the horizon with this one. Americans feel betrayed by their
government and are not willing to compromise.. Illegal aliens are willing to
break U.S. laws and set themselves up to become the next slave labor class in
America. The citizens need to override shortsighted legislators and save the
country while their is still something left to save.

What if the bi-lingual employee is an illegal alien and not suppost to be in the country let alone work here? Seems like speaking two launguages is not the issue, legal residence in the USA is more relevant.

It is time to have our laws enforced. Our people are very angry about what has
happened and encouraged by poloticians and churches. I agree with the person
above who talked of revelotion.
