Guess I'm missing at least part of the point here. I can see the opposition based on the fact that it'd cut through two schools, but not that it comes "within 500 meters" of three others. 500 meters is roughly 2.5 blocks on the SLC grid system.

I-215 was adjacent to the elementary school I attended as a child (Meadowlark Elementary, for those familiar with the Rose Park area). I think there's a newer school in Rose Park adjacent as well. Clearfield High is adjacent to I-15. There's probably a lot more that aren't springing to mind.

Apparentlly being somewhat close to the highway isn't exactly the end of the world.

This is all part of the Sierra Klub's well orchestrated plan to block ANY freeway on the West Side.

The doctors and mom's don't know or care that lack of mobility will damage out-of-school education opportunities for West side children. Parents and families will spend more time in gridlock.

Pollution in cars is being cleaned up at breakneck pace. Trucks are improving, too. My analysis of WFRC presentations and modeling data shows our air has over 1500 tons LESS NOx this year than last.

In 13 years' time, NOx Pollution and its byproduct pollutants, ozone and particulates,(from vehicles) will be one-fourth of 2001 levels.

West Side communities are responsible for the current route because they allowed development in the previous freeway corridor, along 5400 West.

UDOT should provide HEPA filters on nearby school airconditioning systems for 13 years. Other school adjustments can reduce possible impacts, mostly on those few days when pollution peaks.

Sierra KLUB wants underperforming UTA trains, instead. NOT realistic! West Valley TRAX will not impact car travel.

UTA pollutes more NOx than it saves, according to the Legislature's Audit.

The Granite Board should have spent more time on this before lock-stepping into the Sierra Klub's line.

Put it at 7200 West.

The Sierra Club had nothing to do with the Board's decision. The concerns were brought to the board by PARENTS, not environmentalists, and this parent will continue the fight. The freeway can be put in at 7200 West and not affect any schools. Even with filters on the A/C, those kids will be playing outside and breathing that air. And studies show that air quality near freeways doesn't improve until you are 1500 meters from the road. I'm sorry about the other schools near freeways, but that doesn't mean we have to sit back and let this one go in without saying a word.

I think it is ridiculous that they would even consider tearing down the soccer field and building a highway there. There is nothing on 7200 W that would be effected. 2 more blocks west won't make that drive long enough to kill anyone! It just makes sense!
@ Newell | 12:24 p.m. Feb. 20, 2008
Newell claims that we meet or exceed federal air quality standards...uh, yeah, that's not saying much...have you looked out your window today? Wanna go take a lungful of that air, pal?
Wake up UDOT | 1:09 p.m. Feb. 20, 2008
Why is UDOT pushing another north-south freeway. What we need in Salt Lake Valley is an east-west freeway spur in the central or southern part of the valley. UDOT has no idea that people also travel east and west. Fewer and fewer people work in or travel to SLC.
Homeowner | 3:29 p.m. Feb. 20, 2008
There isn't a good place to put this road. If UDOT would have made 5600 West a 4 lane road all the way to 7800 S even 5 years ago, this wouldn't be an issue. Our home will be ONE of many torn down if this road is put in at 7200 West, we've lived there for 18 years. UDOT will take 500 feet west of 7200 W for a road that will start at SR201 go South to 4100 S turn East several blocks (they can't go any further South) jog South again and East, yeah that makes sense. WAIT make it a toll road, I'm sure Utahan's will pay. It gets better, the latest images UDOT's using are at least 12 years old, we've added stuff to our property since then. They don't know how many homes they'll take. Is your home one that will be torn down for a road for the people on the south end of the valley? What we need is a East/West road, why does SR201, with 3 lanes stop at 4000 W. GO POWERLINES! Sorry Craig there are PEOPLE West of 7200 West!
Svoboda | 3:25 p.m. Feb. 20, 2008
I lived in the neighborhood, when UDOT decided to put the freeway right down the middle of the neighborhood. The plan for 20 years had been going down 5600, then it shifted to go past even more schools, and right thru a neighborhood. Yet, all meetings with UDOT were like spitting in the wind - useless. So I moved away from what was coming.

UDOT, listen this time and stop wasting time and money. Move it further west, where there are not established neighborhoods and schools.

Duh, double duh.

Amazing some of the un-intelligent comments. 7200 West is more than 2 blocks west of 5400. Take a drive down 7200 West and check out all the homes and business that will have to be destroyed to avoid putting it down a power corridor next to a couple of schools. Has anyone noticed howmay schools there are along Bangerter, did the school districts get involved back then?
7200 Doesn't Affect Schools? | 4:09 p.m. Feb. 20, 2008
Hello?

Have they forgotten about Lake Ridge Elementary. With the 7200 W route, kids could throw snowballs at passing cars.

Maybe it really is time for a new school district if they forget about some of their schools.

7200 S. does not alleviate the issue. The Mountain View Corridor alternative of 7200 W. still actually runs along 5600 W. from approx. 10600 S. to 7500 S. 9 schools are in close proximity of the 8 lanes of 5800 (7200 alt.) and 6 lanes (4 travel & 2 transit) of 5600 W. which is part of the corridor as a "high-capacity roadway".

Highways should no longer be built near schools as over 200 extesive medical studies in the past 10 years document that children who live/attend school near busy roadways have signigicant impairment to their lung development, resulting in lung deficits for the rest of their lives (as well as signigicant increases in leukemia, asthma, etc.). I live between 5600 & 5800 W. and am extremely concerned about the combined impact of these two large roadways within 2 blocks. Traffic waiting to enter or exit these roadways will inevitably back up(often within residential areas), this is neither reasonable nor rational. New highways should be built as efficiently & responsibly as possible. An east-west corridor is the true solution to help alleviate congestion. I am "just a mom" and not affiliated with any environmental groups.

Pollution near children playing at schools like Hillside Elementary in West Valley is a big reason parents don't want the Mountain View Corridor at 5800 West.
