Buttars has no duty to grovel at the feet of the NAACP by meeting with Jeanetta
Williams. This only lends undeserved credence to
Williams�s ridiculous hypersensitivities, and gives her
another opportunity to beat Buttars over the head with her empty charge. Come

While we are trying to clean the Senate, let's get rid of the Eagle Forum,
Utah's answer to the KKK. Gayle keeps touting about Senator Buttars'
work at the Boy's Ranch, but can't seem to come up with much more than
that. I think a counter rally should be planned at the capital in opposition to
Senator Buttars and Grand Wizard Gayle. These people need to go away far and
fast!

A guy made a stupid comment. He apologized. It should end there.
Instead, the Utah media - led by the Deseret News and Tribune - has decided to carry water for a truly racist and morally bankrupt organization - the NAACP - and all but called for the resignation of a democratically elected member of the state government.
The NAACP is not elected by the people of Utah. It has not somehow magically acquired the capability to represent us or Buttars' constituents. It is a now irrelevant organization that thrives on blowing entirely out of proportion the accidental comments of others and requires the media to spread its news.
It's time to stop this nonsense. Let the voters decide what is good on this issue.

Wow. If there were a rope around here, the majority of you would be out there
stringing the guy up to the nearest tree. I'll bet most of you
haven't even listened to what he said in the actual context that it was
used. The only racism that I see around here is coming from those of you who
are decrying his remarks as racist. The terms that he used are commonly used to
describe bad events or circumstances. I'm sure none of you have ever used
the term "It's a black day" or something similar to describe a
day that'll go down in history as a bad one due to some event.

Great. We are stuck with Buttars for another four years, because I have no hope
that lazy voters (at least give them credit for actually going to the polls)
will elect someone else. Buttars is only meeting with the NAACP to cover his
rear end for his re-election campaign. Note to "I WAS": The Deseret
Morning News did not create this issue. Buttars did. The DMN, like any good
newspapers, is covering the story that Buttars created. Don't blame the

audacity to run for office again!
Unbelievable that the Utah Republican party has once again shown its good-ole-boy nature by skirting the issue and not castigating Butters for this and ALL the NUMEROUS prior indiscretions of the past. Just a good-ole-boys club at that!
And it will be absolutely unbelievable if the folk in his district don't sit up and send Butters a commanding mandate by not voting him back into office, for the sake of both the Republican party and more importantly, the moral values our community, the State and the Church are trying to convey to the Nation and World... namely, that we're not a bunch of racist, anti-Black, bigoted bunch of backwoods hicks trying to look like sophisticated citizens of the modern openly democratic society we are supposed to be part and parcel of.

Buttars has brought dishonor to his office and the entire state. The issue is
not only the "black ugly baby" comment; it includes his ongoing record
of encouraging the marginalization and hatred of those who do not fit his mold
of normalcy. I am a diehard Utah County conservative Republican and strongly
encourage Senator Buttars to take the high road and resign with dignity. To do
otherwise will further tarnish his legacy.

Buttars is neither better nor worse than many of us. He is just an average
Utahan who made poor choice of words when opposing a bill that the sponsor had
been calling his "baby". In my opinion, if he had just said "ugly
baby", the same vicious few who have been dominating the news would have
still reacted with all the mock outrage... they were looking for something
pounce on Buttars about, and they weren't about to be denied. Sen. Buttars
is not a hateful person. He is a public servant who has done his best for many
years. He deserves our gratitude, not our condemnation.
On the other hand, the hate-mongers who have spewed their vitriol on this board have left now doubt about their own intolerance and bigotry... they let it all hang out for everybody to see. What of them? I fear for the future of our state and country.

I ask again, since when does the NAACP, and the race they represent, OWN the

words all the time in innumerable context's and black people don't
even cross my mind in doing so. I don't follow Utah politics nor do I know

Yet, during Mitt's campaign, the fact that he lost, absent any comments,
was prejudice by non-Mormons. The hypocrisy of this state is amazing. Even
more amazing is Senator Buttars' comments and the fact that he'll be
re-elected. What is absolutely shocking is the amount of racism displayed by
the people of Utah on these discussion boards. Whether its African-Americans
(who are being hypersensitive) or Hispanics (who are "simple" and
treated as dirt simply because they are looking for better lives just like
everyone's ancestors here) or Southern Baptists (who are the only religion
to take a candidates religion into the voting booth(?)) or just plain Gentiles
in the state (who are apparently the biased ones?), the majority of Utahns rip
them apart. Is this comment signaling out all Mormon Utahns? No. Simply the

I agree with an earlier poster. One or more Republican contenders from West
Valley City need to step up to the plate and oppose Buttars in the primary.
Everyone knows that the real elections in Utah happen in the Republican
primaries. If Buttars makes it past the primary, he will almost certainly win
re-election because of the (R) next to his name on the ballot.
And all you Republicans who vote straight party ticket in November, remember Buttars will very likely be on that that ticket! Don't vote straight Republican party ticket! (BTW, a very high percentage of Utahns vote straight party Republican. About 40% in my Cedar Hills precinct voted straight party Republican in the 2004 general election.)

How much more evidence do we need that the Republican leadership of the
legislature is morally bankrupt? So far this session they've voted down
renewable energy legislation, tuition help for the helpless, protection for
abused animals, and even protection for little children from being trapped in a
vehicle with a smoker. They've voted down any meaningful health-care
reform. What a heartless, mean-spirited crowd of self-important buffoons. And
now they say Buttars is a "good man"? Listen, I'm a Republican
and a voter; all my friends are Republicans and voters, and from what I hear

It's amazing how those who rhapsodize about "diversity" the most
actually respect it the least. They believe diversity is defined only as your
right to agree with them. They believe that every part of society should be
equally "kaleidoscopic", rather than view America as what former NYC
Mayor David Dinkins once referred to as a "gorgeous mosaic".
My suggestion to Utahns who do not like the predominant Utah culture - consider moving to one of the 49 other states. Utah has just as much right to its culture as does California. The states were intended to be sovereign entities in their own right, not just be sockpuppets of the Federal government.

An elected representative of one of Utah's largest cities should know
better than to use the words he chose. Either he is a naive fool who didn't
understand the connotations of what he was saying or is a completely out of

The third week in March the Republican Party holds caucus meetings to elect delegates to the County Convention. The delegates choose the candidates for the party including Senator Buttars. Typically only a handful of people show up making it easy to get elected. They even elected me one year and I'm a flaming liberal.
If only the Eagle Forum type folks show up then they will continue to choose candidates like Chris. If you show up you may find someone who shares your values who can actually be a statesman.
