David Archuleta seems vulnerable to the destruction of fame. The money hungry vultures (ugly cigar toting vampire producers) will exploit the poor kid making him a prisoner to a frantic, stupid, pop idol worshiping society of pimply teens.

Funny you should mention Liahona.net. I participate in a group that is assisting with Liahona.net's goal of providing quality LDS and spiritual music for church members all over the globe. We had the opportunity just this week to record some beautiful peices for the website. Keep in mind that all the performers that participate in this effort do so pro-bono and on their own time. It is wonderful to be able to use our talents to help others. There is all types of music being recorded, both instrumental and vocal. Just think that in a few days someone in China would be able to download something that I participated in. It is a very cool concept.

I sort of agree with both those moms. In some ways I look at the entertainment industry as a fast ticket to the T-K. But on the other hand, there is still beautiful music to to be written and sung and the world needs to hear it. We have to let our light so shine. I pray there is a way to do that with out letting it be distinguished by the powers at hand.

I have always understood the Parable of the Talents is actually talking about money. How much money we are stewards of and how much we give back to the Lord. A Talent in Biblical times is a coin. In our Mormon culture we have used the term literally and now we talk about our gifts as Talents. While I think we should all be bettering ourselves it is worth the clarification of the Talent.

What does being a Mormon have to do with anything on American Idol. It's not a religious contest.
How many Jehovah Witnesses are there? How many of the Jewish persuasion? The perspective of even writing this article seems really odd to me.

Uh, it's an article under the section "LDS Newsline." Don't you think that an article under a section devoted to Mormon news and info just might have an article about.....gulp......Mormons? Don't be such a hater. I bet if there were a section of the newspaper devoted to Jehovah Witnesses, it just might actually have articles about Jehovah Witnesses. This isn't the New York Times, it's a local newspaper based out of Utah.

The point is it's not news at all. Why does the Church want to take credit for all the hard work these kids do to get where they are. And THEY ARE trying to take credit for it. I'm not "hating" anything. And I know the Deseret News. Lived in Utah for 50 years.

What are you talking about? The church is not trying to take any credit at all for what these young people are trying to accomplish. Let me guess, according to your logic the church must have taken credit for Steve Young's athletic successes as well, along with numerous other athletes, etc.

The church tries to be very supportive of its members in their pursuits of dreams, etc. as long as they are keeping in touch with the standards the church has taught, etc. But taking credit for it- no way dude, you're way off base here.

Also, just because the Deseret News puts some guys blog about AI and Mormons involved in it doesn't mean they're trying to make an agenda as this being a religious contest. There are numerous people living up and down the Wasatch Front that are interested in how members of their faith are doing. It's just some guys blog in a section devoted entirely to these kinds of things(MormonTimes.com).

If you're not interested or you don't like things relating to Mormons then simply don't read it. It's not that difficult.

I am so proud of the youth in the church and know that they are very instrumental in people being able to feel the spirit of the Lord thru their actions and words. They are great examples of truth.

I knew Brooke in High School. We went in the same stake. She was so much fun to hang out with. My Congrats goes out to her and a huge Good Luck! I hope she makes it far and wins. What an amazing woman she is!

Thanks for the article! I don't ordinarily watch the show but am always interested in knowing what my brothers and sisters in the gospel are doing.

So, I watched tonight and caught David's performance. He did great! He will definitely make the cut this time! I'll watch for Brooke tomorrow.

Since Mormons number about 1 in 53 (right?) in the US, it was not likely we would have anyone in the final 24. Instead, we have TWO! Great! In the American Mother of the Year and Young Mother of the Year competition, we ARE ALWAYS WAY over-represented numerically. I think it reflects the way we are taught to value family, and most LDS women respond well to the challenge...some exceedingly so.

At any rate, I'm excited to see these two young people compete. David seems quite grounded, and with the support of family, friends, and the ward, I think he can succeed in the entertainment field without falling into a black hole. After all, the Osmonds, Steve Young, and others have done incredibly well and still managed to hang onto their standards.

Good luck to you two! Pray hard, relax, and HAVE FUN with it! We'll be watching!

If a child has been brought up right show business will not bring him down. No matter what his religion. There's peer pressure even at school trying to bring down the morals of all kids. So best of luck to you David!!! You have great talent go out there and share it!!

Let's face facts. Cardin got cut ecause she forgot the words of her song in the Hollywood auditions. She's pretty, and very talented, but she blew it.

You are so off base, what evidence do you have that the Mormon Church is trying to take credit for these two individuals accomplishment? I don't see anywhwere in the article where President Monson (or any other church leader) is trying to steal their thunder. Where is the information in the article that you use to base your statement? Obviously you have an axe to grind against the LDS faith and this little article about two successful members of the church was just too hard for you to pass up. Your true colors are showing after your second post.

I'm sorry, but this tablog just isn't up to par, and shouldn't be part of what ought to be a reputable paper like the Deseret Morning News.

I mean, "too many [Mormons] for the show"?!?!? Are you kidding me? Did you really say that? Is this the same blogger who said something like so-and-so is in so-and-so's ward in SoCal, and I heard that....? And you TEACH at BYU?? What kind of nonsense is this?!?!

You make all Mormons look like snivelling fools when you suggest that the producers are all out to get them, and that somehow the viewers know/care about the religious preferences of the contestants while they're singing.

Just stop this inane Sunday School gossip. Gimme a break.

PS - Other papers take the local/state angle on hometown contestants, too, but they don't take the all-to-predictable Mormon-only angle that Utah papers seem to insist on. NYC: "So, how are our Jewish brethren doing on American Idol, cuz we just don't care unless they're Jewish!" Nonsense.

Geez, Ken, stressed out much? You do know it's a blog, don't you? I mean, really? Can someone who critizes this blog in good conscience say something as fallacious as "you make all Mormons look like snivelling fools"? Take absolute generalizations and false assumptions.

And, on the other hand, do you realize that the blog is for technically Mormons by Mormons? So, wouldn't that mean a blog about Mormons should be discussing Mormon things? Wouldn't a Mormon blog be different than, say, the NY Times?
