High school wrestling: Wasatch wins 8th straight crown

Wasatch won it's 6th straight crown, not 8th. It is their 8th since 2000,
but Delta won in 2002.

What a great finish in the 3A race. Powerhouse Wasatch had a surprise push from
Delta, which made the finals more interesting. My son and I kept totaling the
scores after each final, seeing Delta keep a lead in the early matches. But
Wasatch's strong tradition and strength in the upper weights proved to be
too much for Delta. But it made for an exciting finals. Overall, the state meets
in all classifications provided some of the best wrestling in years as it
crowned many multiple title winners and several among the best in the whole
country. Wrestling in Utah continues to improve and compete with the
country's top elite wrestlers. Good job to the dedicated wrestlers and
their coaches for all the time they put in to the sport. Also, good luck to
those wrestlers who move on to the Senior Nationals; make Utah proud.

I agree it was excititng and dramatic! Delta came in with a GREAT team and top
wrestlers to make this a memorable tournament.

Actually it was the sixth straight and 18th overall. Good job to the Wasps for
keeping up TRADITION! I'm proud of you guys!

It's six straight I believe, not eight. It's been nice to be a
Wasatch fan over the last couple decades, but Delta looks VERY good for the
next 5-6 years, at least. Look for them to be Utah's best team regardless
of class next year if they keep working this offseason. The future looks bright
Delta. Uintah has a lot of good young wrestlers too.

Wasatch recieved over 50 points from 2 wrestlers that placed 1st and 2nd in
state at 5A last year. Both took state this year for Wasatch and one of the 5A
wrestlers cost a Wasatch kid a state title. Without their help this year
Wasatch would be third. Say what you will it gives them an advantage fair or
not.

Again, Wasatch has also lost two kids that placed in 5A this year and a two-time
1A champ that would very likely have won 140 in 3A this year if he'd been
through the Wasatch program, probably even as is. It goes both ways. This is
just whining, poor sportsmanship, and worst of all, jealousy and bitterness
towards a team who's been pounding you for nearly two decades.

Actually, most of the championships Delta won in the 2A were while Wasatch was
still there. Wasatch had horrible teams when they moved into the 3A! Shortly
after is when they came on strong with the Sanderson boys

Without they sanderson family wasatch would be mediocre and not have as many

That Wasatch boy at 171 had just as much right to that state title as the other boys in that weight class and division. It wasn't Shafer's fault that it happened to be his own team mate he had to wrestle in the finals. He wrestled tough and earned his 2X state championship title.
Your post might as well of said that every champion took someone elses title away. Give me a break already with the jealousy and crying.
There were not any comments or crying when Shafer won the Rocky Mountain Dual, or his 4th Region Title this year.

Why would wrestle fan say that delta fights among themselves. I am from delta
and i have no clue what he is talking about, as far as i know everybody gets
along fine with everybody. Delta has all the peices in place to be dominante in
wresteling for along time, and the best part about it is that all the kids are
FROM DELTA.

I am a nuetral person on this story, and it sounds like you are the ones with no
class. The delta fans are simply stated what they feel goes on at wasatch and
you guys are firing back like there really is something going on, and it bothers
you other people know about it. I was up at the wrestles this weekend and i
heard numerous people talking about the move in's for wasatch not just
delta people.

hey, it's lonely at the top, everyone is jealous and tries to bring you
down,when they can;t do it on the mat, they try to do it on these boards. Not
our fault kids want to move to a championship program. Get better and stop

It was really too bad that Wasatch's 71's had to wrestle each other.
No one wants to beat their own team mate for Region or State. It just goes to
show how good Wasatch's program really is and what a wonderful Coach they
have in Coach Sanderson! He is the real deal, leads by example, and has so much
class.

Heber is one of the fast growing places in America, let alone Utah. Yes when
that many people come here to live we are bound to get some great new talent.
Not our fault people want to come here instead of there. You may only have to
put up with getting beat for awhile longer. If we keep growing like we are, we
will move to 4A and dominate that class like we have 3A.

There is one thing really wrong with people in our state and that is the way we
make nasty comments about other athletes or teams. What we should really be
doing is getting rid of our pride and compliment others on their achievements
and encourage others to do better. Just listen to yourselves and think before
you speak. All wrestlers did an outstandins job but some fought harder than
others and came out on top. Lets all be better at being a "class act".

i am a delta fan and always will be. i want to congratulate wasatch on their 6th
striaght title. to win that many in a row is very impressive no matter what
division you are in. And having two wrestlers in the championship round at 71 is
a great thing to. i know skyler porter and his family and like them all a lot.
there is no doubt in my mind that he will be a state champ next year.
And the race for the team title was great this year and i think next year will be just as good as this one. delta will have a good team and so will wasatch. again congratulation to wasatch for the team title and their individual titles. Also to delta great job and giving wasatch a run for their money

Moving to Heber City is not against the rules. Moving to Wasatch to wrestle for
Coach Sanderson is. This is a pattern that has followed Coach Sanderson
wherever he's been. I would like to know what a home grown Heber City boy
thinks when he prepares his whole life to wrestle for Wasatch then watches a
Lone Peak and Brighton wrestler wrestle in his place. You Wasatch fans would be
whining worse than anyone if Two state champs would have moved to Delta or
anywhere else and they would have beaten you.

You have a good team and Wasatch has a good team. We will see you next year and
hopefully it will be as exciting as this years tournament.
Delta has a great tradition of wrestling and I agree with you that Skyler Porter will be a state champion also. He will get his chance. Shafer is a great kid and wrestler who deserves to celebrate his championship as well. Congratulations to all State placers and Champions. We the fans know how hard you all work and were pleased with the heart that was shown at the tournament and that includes Uintah. Good luck in the future to you all!

I wrestled at Wasatch and lost a spot when a kid by the name of Pete Julander
moved in from Wyoming in 1998. I don't ever remember feeling like that
spot was preordained to me or that it was wrongly "taken". He was the
better man and that's the nature of competition we pride ourselves on in
this country, isn't it? If somebody does feel slighted up there, then OK.
Skyler Porter was a move-in also, however, and I don't think Colton
Bangerter minded moving up a weight to gain a teammate like Blake Mangum.
On the other hand, trying to put myself in Delta/Uintah's shoes...if they did get some move-ins and won by less than the amount of points those wrestlers provided, I would be going nuts on here. I can understand why you guys would be frustrated and take shots. I'd probably be dishing it out worse than anything I've seen here, anything that's been posted anyway.
Lastly, Delta has a very good looking future. I'm not exactly thrilled about the forseeable years with them. I'd imagine Uintah should do well in 4A as well.

It's the same thing any home grown athlete from anywhere experiences when
athletes are allowed to transfer from program to program, looking for the best
coach and situation, and they are bumped from their neighborhood school team so
some primadona athlete and their parents can play where they want. This
isn't just a problem in the Wasatch wrestling program. It happens
everywhere, in every high school sport. We are not talking about moving into
another city or neighborhood with your family. We are talking about
transferring to a school with the sole purpose to play sports, while your family
remains living in your neighborhood. This practice is wrong, and it will
destroy high school sports we we know it. Soon we will be like California where
high school teams are nothing more than glorified Super League and All-Star
teams. Is this want we want?

You've missed the point. The rules are there. No student athlete can
transfer to a school for athletic reasons, and if they do, they will lose
eligibility. If an athlete's parents move within the school boundaries,
there is nothing that can be done. They are legitimate and can attend the
school. However, if the parents remain in the "home" neighborhood,
and the student athlete wants to attend another school, this requires a special
transfer hearing with the UHSAA. AND, we all know what happens when athletes go
before the UHSAA. Their wish is granted because the UHSAA doesn't have
what it takes to enforce their own rules . . . NO TRANSFERRING FOR ATHLETIC
REASONS! So parents and athletes make up stories that they are transferring for
"social" or "academic" reasons, they bring in their
high-powered attorneys, and the UHSAA backs down with their tail between their
legs. And so it continues in school after school and neighborhood after
neighborhood . . .

Its amazing that a little town like Delta even competes in 3A. A student body of
450 kids is by fare the smallest in class 3A. Give credit where credit is
deserved. Delta is a force in almost every sport and yet their numbers are
always the smallest. Its crazy. And Im sorry to say they dont modify their teams
at all. HECK OF A JOB DELTA WRESTLING TEAM!!! YOU GUYS ARE CHAMPIONS IN ALOT OF
EYS!!!!

It sounds like the "farm boys" went to the archives to dig out the
"we are a small school" drivel, such as was done when they played
Logan in football. The Eagles don't make excuses when they lose (which is
very seldom) even though they are only 250 student body. Act like farm men, not
farm boys!

i second farm boy. Delta has definitely risen to battle the bigger schools of 3A
in most all sports. congrats to coach Wright and his coaches. I choose to live
in Delta no matter what place we take in sports. We have a great community. We
have the biggest crowds at home or away sporting events. We love to support our
youth. GO RABBITS!!!

Millard does only have 250 students but they also play schools that have around
that same number. Delta is going against numerous school's that push
900-1000 students. The reason delta doesn't move to 2A is because they
would dominate every sport with the exception of basketball, and no 2A coach
wants delta in their classification.

I understand that wasatch should have a fair team next year but they lost all
their studs. Who do they have coming back other than the two that took state.
Unless sanderson works some magic with students not in the heber valley area
look for uintah and delta to be the top dogs next year. Also north sanpete has
some good young talent, watch out for them.

Wasatch beat Delta by over 20 points in the Dual earlier this year. At State
Delta always gets the easy side of the bracket???? But, in the end the wasps
pulled another title. Instead of making up reasons why Wasatch wins why
can't you just congratulate a bunch of high school, yes HIGH SCHOOL kids
for a job well done.

That is funny you wrestled with Pete Julander? that is about when the move-ins

I was a senior that year and I went into the year knowing I could win my weight class. Then I hear Wasatch pulled some strings and brought a State champ from Wyoming down (Julander). I was mad. It may not of affected you but it stinks to see your opponent start implanting kids who are already proven into their program. It says nothing of their program and "bringing up" good wrestlers. Well I ended up beating Julander but he took it the next year. Pete was a great kid and I know he meant no harm, but I was disheartened at the time.
