So a Wal-Mart sign, KFC sign, McDonald's sign, Arby's sign and a Grease Monkey sign with a snowbound sedan signify an economic boom? I'm not doubting the content of the article, I'm just puzzled about the context of the photo.

By the way Mr. Monkey, you should write "fixed quickly" not "fixed quick"
Wasn't this story.... | 8:49 a.m. Feb. 10, 2008
...published weeks ago?

Anyway, I'll add my same comment: if a temple adds an economic boom to a town, why didn't that happen to Monticello, Utah?

Rexburg's boom has to do with the renaming of Ricks College to BYU_Idaho, thus attracting more students.

These mini-temples have been an economic boom to certain sites and situations. But not Monticello. Why? It should have. Wonder what went wrong.

By the way, renaming Ricks to BYU-Idaho is genius. Idaho sounds so much better than "Ricks." For many years I thought that "Ricks" sounded like a cheap bar in Vegas. This name change broadens the marketing aspect. Kudos to somone at the marketing controls.

Now we have to take a look at BYU. Named after a polygamist. No? Time for a name change: I go with ... well you fill it in. It is hard to tell the world about this great Mormon faith that is 100% correct, after all it is God's choice and God cannot be wrong, and then say opps about BY and his polygamy.

Give us time, we will rename BYU. Politically correctness will win out.

The shadow knows.

Wal-Mart, KFC, McD's, and Arby's were all there BEFORE Rick's became BYU-Idaho.

Hey Shadow....You are obviously distought about something. If you dont like it here and have a chip on your shoulder, why dont you move? I did not grow up in this area, and I have only lived here for a few years now, but I love it, and would not change it for anyone like you. Good luck, I reccomend a counsler for your anger.

Temples can be economic booms, but you also have to look at placement. Vernal, Utah has a temple, but the town is not close to anything. You still need to have businesses and industry to generate a boom around the temple. Monticello is the same way. There is no industry there. The temple in Rexburg will help generate a little economy, but most of Rexburg's growth will be because of BYU-I. As a former student of Ricks, I'm happy to hear that the town of Rexburg is still safe, family friendly, and working hard to keep the town a nice place for all to live and work.

FYI, I lived in Rexburg until last year and yes the renaming of Rick's to BYU-Idaho was an econimic boom for Rexburg but it really exploded after the announcement of the temple. I don't know why but that's how it happened. Also, the Rexburg temple is not a "mini" it's actually 5 stories and nearly 60,000 square feet.

Signs at the north end of Rexburg reflect the city's growing economy, which received major boosts with the new LDS temple and with the former Ricks College becoming the four-year BYU-Idaho.
