How Mitt Romney can help save America

Hey Uncle Orson, great to see you in the D-News! I've actually seen several mentions on the 'net promoting Mitt vs. John Kerry in Mass. That would be a big win and a step towards regaining the GOP majority in the Senate. All those things you mention sound good, if somewhat far-fetched for Mitt & Co.

I am so sick of being called bigoted because I believe criminals should not be given benefits. I love the diversity that LEGAL immigration provides. What I don't love is giving BILLIONS of dollars in benefits to people who are in this country illegally. You should educate yourself before spouting this kind of nonsense. Talk to some of the citizens and legal immigrants who have been negatively affected by illegals. That might open your eyes if not your mind.

You're right. Americans don't like to lose wars. That's why we're so angry at Bush for lying his way into a losing war from the start (while the Taliban runs free in Afghanistan...). If you think Romney's "double Guantanamo" rhetoric is going to win him more converts, you're up in the night. People are tired of the politics of paranoia. They're tired of Romney's disingenuous pandering. Romney lost because people think he's a kissup. And your strategy is to go on a kiss-up tour?

Mr. Card, your constant fear-mongering and war-drum-beating, coupled with your tiresome, clumsily contrarian, Zell Miller-like insistence that you're a democrat, have become thoroughly unconvincing.

I think that the 1976 Reagan model will work. Mitt needs the extra time to modify a few of his views other than doubling Gitmo. John Edward's 2 Americas is not the baloney Mitt thinks.
Also, having lived in the South over half of my life, I can also testify that mormon bashing has been and still is well entrenched. A poll done by a Vandy prof demonstrated that it is twice as acceptable to discriminate against a candidate over religion, than gender or race. Perhaps this will change for the better over the next 4 years also. Having lived with it for as long as I have, I doubt it, but still hope for the best.

I don't think that those who oppose illegal immigration are bigoted, personally.

Unfortunately, the Christians of the so-called Bible Belt felt it necessary to be afraid of Romney's religion and voted for Huckabee. I believe this was a big mistake. It's a shame that people couldn't put their fears aside for the good of the nation but fear is a great mechanism of influence. As I've always said, Romney wasn't and isn't running for Pastor of the Nation. He would and may someday be a great President of the United States. I'm speaking as a conservative Baptist.

All great advice, Mr. Card. Romney has certainly made himself the strongest conservative face in the Republican Party, with the endorsements of Rush, Hannity, Ingraham, National Right to Life, and over 100 more--a mantle McCain looked like he would die for at CPAC today, and if he can pick up where he left off this year in endorsements in 2012, he will be a shoe-in.

Not to mention he should start off his fundraising very strong with his current donor list. He may not need any more of his own money.

There will be less need for contrast ads, which appeal to and inform the mind but unfortunately not so much the heart.

I look forward to more great speeches from one of our greatest Americans, and honor his sacrifice today.

Romney running has done a lot of good. I would love to see him as VP and then as President in 2012. Many of us were not prepared for the anti-Mormon bias that came out during Romney's campaign. The church has been scrutinized and it did well. It is true that any publicity is good publicity regarding the church.

Pretty good article. I liked it all except two things:
1. Illegal is illegal and doesn't have anything to do with bigotry. I do not hate anyone but I do not agree with illegal immigration.
2. The war is a UN effort and since we're there I agree we need to make it work somehow, but we need to get out as quickly as possible. Its just not Iraq that's a problem area for terrorists. If we started a war everywhere there were terrorists we would be everywhere trying to fix the situation. Securing our borders is the key.
Interesting how the illegal immigration problem ties closely to the war on terror.
Anyway, Romney could do well to become Mr. Republican but he shouldn't compromise his values just to schmooze with the big boys.

I am so happy that Mitt dropped out and he should stay out. The book "When Salt Lake City Calls" explains it so clearly. We do NOT need anymoe Republicans in the White House and certainly NOT a Mormon!!!!!!

To Anonymous. The book "When Salt Lake City Calls" ignores established patterns of reality. Ask any LDS politician and the answer will be the same--the Church does not seek to control them in any way. As Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid stated, the Church does not overstep its bounds and only seeks to help politicians with legislation it deems important, never commanding or dictating. There are numerous LDS politicians serving in both political parties at all levels and branches of state, local and federal government who would agree. The author of that book sought profit at the expense of the Church. What he did is actually help the missionary work by making people question, so maybe we should thank him. I love being a member of a church that lets me think freely, yet gives me correct principles by which I may guide myself.

I have never in my life seen the word 'bigot' used so much as I have in the newspapers of Utah. It seems that everyone else in the nation (outside of Utah) are bigots! Bigots because they have differing views of faith (or none), bigots because they wish for the law to be upheld (?) and the borders to be secured for the safety of our nation?
If the rest of the nation are in fact bigots, I suppose that makes Utah a state full of 'victims'. Where shall we send the aid? Nevermind, because I've also noted that most aid for everyone in the US and in fact the world always comes first from ....Utah! Not to toot your horns or anything.
With these happy facts in hand, it is clear that those with these notions within the state of Utah will be able to aid themselves with little discomfort or loss of temper! Oh happy day! Happy indeed.

I dont care whether Mitt Romney dropped out or not, i only care that he tried. I am sure he had a great experience. That is living with courage, that is not in fear. Mormons are people and they can do much good. I am proud of people who stand up for what is right and what they believe in. I know we make a difference, and maybe not at a national level, but in the little things that matter the most,that make people want to change for the better.Imagine doing that at a national level!

In an airport gift shop last week, I found a copy of the book, "A Mormon in the White House?" 10 things every American should know about Mitt Romney...written by Hugh Hewitt (New York Times Bestselling Author and Nationally Syndicated Talk-Show Host)
I found it VERY interesting!!

I thought this was an interesting article. As a Mitt Romney Supporter, it gave me some hope in his chances in 2012. I have one question for anyone reading:
Would Mitt Romney being John McCain's VP hurt or help Romney??

Bigotry does apply to the immigration issue just like it applies to Mormonism. Bigotry drives the anti-illegal-immigrant movement because it gives the opportunity to bash a group of people, mainly Latin Americans (that's right ! we are not talking about illegals from Europe). It was very ironic that Mitt's campaign decided to use the immigration issue as a trampoline and then lose because of bigotry. How more Ironic can that get !!! ?

I may not have a stance on the illegal-immigrant thing, but I do have a comment on the Mitt Romney thing.
I was pro-Romney, but I didn't believe he would necessarily "save" America like some people did. Some assumed that because he was LDS, he had good standards...and that's not necessarily the case, seeing as he was, at one point, pro-abortion and gay marriage, and those were things I did not like about him. But compared to the other Republican candidates, he was definitely a lot more qualified than them. Even though he flipped flopped, things like the Olympics proved that he had leadership qualities that would benefit America. Now whether he'll run and make it in 2012, I don't know. We'll just have to wait. But there's always the possibility that someone better than Romney will arise then. Time will tell. The "Elders of Israel saving America" may not mean what some people think it might. There might be a different, unseen way to save America without running for president...that's just my personal opinion.
