Mitt couldn't overcome | 1:20 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
Romney couldn't overcome all the bigots and Mormon haters around the country. Too bad. Now what do we have to look forward to? Vote McCain and you have all our resources going to Iraq, Afganistan and where ever else he wants to start another war. Remember McCain himself stated he really doesn't understand economics. That's certainly comforting.

However, I don't think McCain will win in November. People are sick of George Bush and more of the same.

So here are a couple predictions:

1. McCain loses in a landslide to whichever Democratic candidate he runs against.

2. You'll be begging for Romney in 2012 to come back and try to solve the countries considerable financial problems.

Things are only going to get worse. Hopefully in 2012 it won't be too late.
Mark | 1:26 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
Why in the world would anyone want another Republican as President considering the disastous 7 years we have had with Bush. And as for Romney's rampage about staying in Iraq...why are his children not fighting in Iraq! How phoney can you get! God answered my prayers...Romney dropped out!!!!
CougarKeith | 1:28 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
I have to say I cannot vote for McCain unless he changes some of his views. The only thing I can see happening is voting for him with Mitt Romney as his running mate. Then at least we (the True Conservative Party) are one heart beat away from the presidency. Other wise I think I will have to vote for Ralph Nater should he run independant or "Libratarian". I don't know what to do at this point in time.

What?! No Mitt?! Let us wage Conservative Jihad!
sno | 1:29 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
Even McCain's mother said people would have to hold their nose and vote for him. Doesn't sound like she has much confidence in him.
I am sickened... | 1:25 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
...literally physically ill at the prospects we now have left for the presidency in both parties. Pass the pepto...
Workinglate | 1:25 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
A McCain-Romney ticket won't happen - as bad as McCain needs someone like Romney on his ticket (Mitt provides geographic / tempterment / real world experience / ideological balance), McCain won't do it - he doesn't like Mitt - at all. He may pick Rudy or even Thompson, but you won't see Mitt on the ticket.

to Hatuletoh - why do they not like Mitt? It wasn't because of his campaign style - I would argue that McCain's tactics has far less class than Mitt's - it's because they were jealous of the guy. As I heard someone say the other day - most politicians hope to be good looking, rich, and intelligent - most settle for 1 out of 3. Romney had all 3 and they couldn't stand him for it. Why he could not translate that into more votes, I'm not sure other than being the new kid didn't help.

Let McCain be the 2008 version of Bob Dole in 1996 - the war hero that is, unfortunately, unpredictable, volatile, old, and not aligned with his conservative base. Let's see if McCain does better against a younger, more articulate, and dynamic opponent (Dole lost by 220 Electoral Votes).

I have come to conclusion that it does not matter who we elect as President. What can one person do anyway?

Democrats call republicans crooks.

Republicans call democrats crooks.

Our nation has been run by these two parties fairly equally for many decades now and neither can take a greater portion of the blame. Neither have inspired hope.

We are pawns on a chess board being used by the parties to further party policies. If your democrat, have you ever asked why? Same if youre republican. This is not the United States of Democrats or Republicans. This is the government of the people. If we continue to be divided along party lines we will fall. We must embrace the best of both parties and have a voice, our own voice, not the voice of our parties.

I do not know if Mitt would have been a good president or not, but in the course of his political career, he has been a good example of losing his voice to match what was popular. And that is not what we need now.

We will not have a nation much longer if we dont stop the political banter and embrace communication.
Fred Mcgriff | 1:32 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
Mitt, keep thine chin up. You've got a supporter here. McCain? Clinton? Forgetta 'bout it. It's Obama time!
Still mormon, but not GOP | 1:30 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
It's amazing to me how anyone in the Mormon Church can maintain their affiliation with the Republican Party when 30% of the party members (in more than one poll) have stated, without reservation, that they would never vote for a mormon in a national election. The bigotry in this party is over the top and it's time to move on to the growing ranks of unrepresented independants.

Huckleberry is the first one to bring out the religion problem, and it made him winning Iowa and destory Mitt's momentum. If this country fail, or more people die in Iraq in the next 4 years, I hope Huckleberry will be m an enough to take the blame.

To ScottAZ | 11:28 a.m. When you say "After 4-8 yrs of a Democrat President America will be more than ready for a Republican (Mitt) to clean up the mess once again just like Republicans are STILL trying to clean up after the Clinton years."

Please tell me what this mess from the Clinton's was, I can't figure it out.

As best I can tell it was:
a budget surplus rather than deficits,
buying down the national debt rather than piling on more debt.
Low unemployment and rising wages.
Reductions in the welfare rolls.
The longest peacetime economic expansion on record.

Please do tell me about this Clinton mess.

Also, how come in 6 years of a Repub President and Congress with no vetos (other than stem cells) they couldn't get the job done? Seems like Repubs must be pretty inept not to get the job done in that amount of time.
Anonymous | 1:36 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
Non Mormon and inactives...GET OUT OF UTAH! We don't need you and either does the church! Its because of people like you that Mitt isn't running for president any longer. GET OUT OF HERE!!!!! NOW!!! GO!!!
RE: Wake Up Utah | 1:43 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
Whoever wrote this made the vain and ignorant assumption that most people do about mormons - that our church "controls" us. Well, sir or madame, we believe it's God that wants us to choose a lifestyle following those commandments. If God tells me tea is bad, I won't drink it. I am an 18 year old who voted for Romney in the California primary, and am disappointed that I have to choose the lesser of two evils in the general election in November. McCain, while a Republican, is a liberal Republican, and claims to be conservative. I'd vote Obama over him, because Obama is honest about his liberalism. I'd take a younger honest man as president over the weasel McCain/Huckabee ticket the GOP is sure to throw out now. Of course, if Billary wins the Dem nomination, Americans will have sealed their decision to hasten the country down the path to Hell.
John McCain is an angry old man | 1:38 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
John McCain will not be a good leader for our country. He harbors ill will and still thinks calling the Vietnamese "Gooks" is ok. He was questioned about this during the 2000 primaries. McCain is a racist!

McCain is a whiny "I deserve to Prez because I was in the hanoi hilton crybaby!" Enough of that. that doesn't qualify you to be Prez.

Mormons should not automatically vote Repub this fall like they normally do. The south wouldn't support our well qualified and conservative candidate, because of religious bigotry. Why should we support theirs?

West Virginia dirty tricks mean turn about is fair play.

Four years of Clinton or Obama won't kill us. They will still defend our nation from terroristic threats. We survived 8 years of Bill. We can survive 4 of Obama.

Republican resurgence in Congress in 2010 and Mitt for Prez in 2012!
Charles | 1:39 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
The comments made for the most part have been positive. However, the Utah Dumbocrats are out in full force it appears. Mitt Romney was the only viable candidate because he was a Mormon. I doubt that any other so-called candidates could ever get a temple recommend. It's about time we stood up for what we really believe. Mormon values are America's values. They are based upon hard work, not depending on the Government for bailing us out of our mistakes or sins, and advancing the cause of liberty. We have the family values that say there should be a Mother and Father in the home and no babies unless you are married. We believe that a person can worship God as he sees fit, or a cow, the moon, or whatever he wishes. There is no religious test for running for office in spite of what Huckafool would want his evangelical sheep to believe. We believe in the work ethic, a strong defense, and finally, the Constitution. Mitt was a man of character because he was a Mormon and until our nation realizes this they will continue to head toward destruction.
GAC in Texas | 1:41 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
At least you got to vote for Mitt in Utah. Texas had been denied anyone worth voting for now, and many of my friends (non Mormon) by the way, were voting for Mitt. We now are stuck with the little emperor and the non conservative Huckster. Well, it's nice to know some of Utah is going to the Democratic side because I know a few Texans who just decided to move over to the blue side including me. Perhaps we can paint the map blue including Utah on election day and then after a disaster to the economy for 4 years, we can get the country to see Mitt again. Hopefully by that time McCain will be living on his wife's beer money in Arizona for 4 years, Huck will have taken a raft down the Mississippi and people will want someone who knows how to make money for the country. Sometimes you don't know what you've got until you lose it and we are about to lose a lot for 4 years.

The Plastic has melted. Now the race can go on without the salesman.
Bad Movie | 1:41 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
Mitt's run for president was like a bad movie with the main actor talking like a broken record lacking human emotions.

Should had Limbaugh run for him | 1:47 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
In his farewell speech today, Romney focused on the war on terror (isn't THIS the only thing the GOP has left?), children born out of wedlock, the weakenig of God worship (no surprise there either)and a final parting denunciation of the evils of and ills caused by liberalism.
He could have saved time and money by just having his guru, Rush Limbaugh run for the presidency.
Perplexed | 1:44 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
SCARE-SCARE- big business politics. When is the rest of the world going to take part in this thing called terrorism? If this is such a important issue I would think others would be with us sharing the burden, and especially Iraq's government and citizens. How many years does it take to train soldiers? We take private citizens into our armed service and for the most part they are trained in less than a year and then are sent into battle, always in history has been this way. Let's see others participate or safely get out of being the world protector. This one-sided big brother protector of the world is BULL.
Bill | 1:44 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
I won't vote for McCain. The only thing that may save our nation is a very hard slap in the face. Perhaps a Clinton/Obama or Obama ticket would in the long-run be for the best. Rather than being slowly boiled under McCain, the shock of a hard left Democrat president/combined with a Democrat majority of Congress would be so destructive, the nation can start a road to recovery in the subsequent congressional elections.

Since I can't vote for Obama or Hillary, either, I am likely to vote for a third party ticket or leave the presidential line blank.
Unfortunate ending | 1:50 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
It's disappointing that the person with the best qualifications to run the federal government has dropped out. As a lifelong Republican, and member of the LDS church, I am going to have a very hard time voting for McCain. He's not really a Republican and he's a jerk. There's no way I will vote for any ticket with Huckabee on it. That guy is a religious bigot and an idiot. Why would I vote for someone who hates me like Huckabee does?
Utahn | 1:52 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
Lets all be honest here, both McCain and Huckaberry Hound, as well as a lot of people blogging here are religious bigots, but no one has the guts to say it, certainly not the liberal press, who are very happy today. McCain is a liberal posing as a Republican, and HH is just in for his own ego, the more I listen to him, the more I dislike him. And if all you want to do is concentrate on religion, why not look at Obama's. That will REALLY keep you awake at night. So there are NO good choices now that Romney has pulled out. End of discussion
Agreed | 1:50 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
You nailed it "To Obama Voters". What do we really know about Obama? His father is a radical Muslum and Obama now claims to be Christian. Is there even a slight possibility that after if elected, when he pulls the troops out that he becomes an inside force for the radical Muslims?
J_fr omCanada | 1:53 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
I have been reading all the postings with interest. I am surprised how much Mr. Romney's religion is mentioned. In Canada, it wouldn't have mattered at all, just the politicians' policies would have made the news. Good luck with whomever you elect
The new Depublicrat Party | 1:54 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
The best candidates are Romney and Obama. I'll never understand why the country can't see that. Now we will choose between the most compromising and deep-seated in Washington cronyism people out there. It's really a new party: I'll call it Depublicrat. Billery, McLiebercaineger and more are at the root.
Anonymous | 1:55 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
Its funny to read Dem supporters claim to support their country. Democrats support illegals, don't care about the US' role and responsibility as a promoter of freedom in the world and will take even more of your and my money to promote their free-loader system (health care etc.)
3 years into Clinton's presidency the deficit was a bigger % of the economy then it is now. While I support a balanced budget, it's funny how you donkeys (bigots it seems by some of your anti-LDS comments) forget how terrible your own 'leaders' are. Obama won't recite the pledge of allegiance, Clinton is a proven liar and yet you're ready to claim either one as the country's savior?
The fact is Romney was the one candidate who MAYBE would have been an honest and responsible president and now we're stuck with 3 terrible candidates and two terrible political parties.
Wayne Perry | 1:56 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
Well, Mr. Romney can now go clean up the chinese olympics.
By the way, Huckabee will be McCains running mate in the fall, the evangelicals will have their way in the end.
Huh? | 2:02 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
"Huckabee says Mormons are not Christians and he is a bigot, so maybe it is time Utahns turn to a more mainstream Democratic party."

Huckabee is a bigot?! How? Because he disagrees with you? Great testimony you have there, my friend.

Just in case you didn't know, Mormons say that they are 'the one true church on earth'. This means that everyone else is false. How is this different?
Nancy | 2:02 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
Yes it is sad that Mitt bowed out. When it all comes down to it, and in the end God will rule. Good will prevail over evil. We should be voting for the person who will do the best job, not because of his religion.
I feel sorry for those who hate mormons. I agree with many others that say we should write Mitt Romney in. I cannot see myself voting for any of the candidates. Things will get a lot worse before it gets better, and people will wish that Romney was our President. He was the best man for the job.
Susie | 2:05 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
I am really said Mitt Romney will not continue with the race. He will be BACK in 2012. He will have my support
Pete | 2:07 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
Yes Mark, God did answer your prayers, not allowing the man with the most morals to win the presidency. It makes me feel good knowing there are still people out there who pray. I am honestly happy that you know that He does listen.
Re:To Obama voters | 2:02 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
I think Obama can protect America from home with the million dollars a day that would be saved if the war was over. To say that staying in Iraq is the only way to protect us from terrorists is to say the Iraq war was fought because Saddam Hussein was working with Bin Laden. That is something I will never believe. Obama also wants to talk to our enemies (Like republican hero Ronald Reagan did). It is arrogant to say there is only one way to handle the security issue and it is George Bush's way. And don't you think it would help the current economic disaster if we weren't dumping one million dollars a day into Iraq?
Ross in Alabama | 2:03 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
It is sad for me to see Mitt suspend his run for the presidency, not because of the states that did or did not go for him, but because of the religious bigotry and hatred from evangelicals. This is something that has been carefully hidden for the last century, but none the less nurtured and indoctrinated in the minds of their little children. Like Gamaliel, a doctor of the law in Acts chapter 5, you might find it a wise course to reign in your hatred and refrain from your collusions, lest haply you also be found even to fight against God. Mitt won our precint in Alabama, his values have resonated with honest men and women across the conntry. I look forward with anticipation for him to resume his campaign. But first we need to fix the pharisee problem in America.
Anonymous | 2:08 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
This is the best thing that could have happened for the Republican party. Had Romney won the nomination, his escapades with Bain Capital would have become national news. How many poor working stiffs, conservative or not, would have voted for him once they understood that much of his fortune came as a "corporate raider", buying, selling, companys and company assets without much if any regard to the human cost. Oh well, some say "that is just the way it works" Well, if that is the way it works we might as well bring back the "Robber Barons". Come to think of it, maybe we already have!
Some Registered GOP | 2:09 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
and former Mitt supporters and donors:

For a man who was supposed to be fighting for a cause, you caved in. You let us down and we won't forget it. You will no longer have our support in future campaigns. You are through. As for McCain, we cannot support the man or what he stands for. Our support is now behind Obama as the lesser of two deomocratic evils. YOU LOSER.
Bruce Van Orden | 2:09 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
Finally, Brother Mitt is out of the race. He will gradually fade from daily public view. We Latter-day Saints can go back to "Blessed are the peacemakers" and "Inasmuch as ye do these things unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye do them unto me" and "We believe in being honest and true" and "Renounce war and proclaim peace" and "Render unto Caesar that which is Caesar's and render unto God that which is God's." This foray of a suddenly transformed rightwing Republican Mormon into presidential politics hurt us badly. Now we can get back to what the mission of the Church really is.
James | 2:05 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
A vote for Obama means a vote for brining the troops home?

Sweet, he's got mine!

On a more serious note, since you are so quick to raise the fear flag by shouting "Terrorists!", can you explain why terrorist recruiting has increased since we've been in Iraq?

Or maybe you can explain Bush's statement that catching Bin Laden is no longer his concern.
Bryce | 2:10 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
Mitt Romney lost out because he "flip-flopped." Many of you posted similar ideas, that he listened to his advisers rather than being "honest with himself and not careen to the hard right for the sake of politics".

What you don't see is that, as a Mormon, Mitt Romney has lived a life of not being "honest with himself." He has been told by someone else what to believe for 60 years! His ability to think for himself has never developed to maturity (or at all).

Like most Mormons, he was indoctrinated with the idea that you don't take a stand on any absolute value; instead, you listen to what an authority says, then you pray for confirmation.

But that process is heretical (in the religious sense), irrational (in the logical sense), and a far cry from enlightened and independent thinking. That is the source of his "flip-flopping," and that is the cause of his demise as a political contender.
ROBERT | 2:09 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
Poor Flip Romney, he couldn't buy or flip-flop his way into the presidency. Maybe he can buy his way into the ex-campaign crying hall of fame?
Sorry to all of you who put their faith into a flip-flopper.
Suspend? He quit! | 2:09 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
He didn't suspend his campaign, he ENDED it.
Suspends means temporarily stopping.

I'm not a word smith, but he isn't going to pick this campaign back up and start running again this year. So he quit!!!

Even he he does decide to run in the future, like 2012, it is a new campaign and doesn't warant the "suspend" title.

Besides, all we can do is hope and pray that a real Republican will rise up and run by 2012

In my view Mitt was the best of the worse, so I voted for him in the primary... but with reservations.

I suppose the only good news from McCain running and perhaps gettig into the white house is that HE owuld NO longer be our Senator rom AZ.
Susan | 2:15 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
Romney's speech was awesome! Americans need him more than they will ever know.
me | 2:16 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
I just think if republicans win this time we all can and should move to one other island. It will be such a mass. I did not like Romney in the first plsace, so I am happy he is out. And his speach today was so bad that I wanted to turn. He just sould go somewhere where nobody can see him. He sould be ashemed at his speech. BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Romney
joh1223 | 2:11 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
Barry Goldwater. Ronald Reagan. John McCain. Which does not belong?
Redbud | 2:11 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
What does "suspend for now" mean exactly? Could Romney throw his hat back into the arena if decides it would be in the best interests for our country?

I'm happy you are so perfect. As for us we are voting OBAMA. Sorry about Mitt, he was a nice guy :(

Can you imagine all of our tax dollars going to build more temples? bye bye Mitt...Go Obama
realist | 2:20 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
It's time to push for Obama. Another Clinton white house is enough to make even the strong weak. Hilary Clinton does not really have what is best for America as her main objective. Hilary Clinton is in the race for Hilary Clinton.

McCain's lack of presence in the Senate, shows his lack of leadership, and his lack of interest in our nation. I understand his past contributions to America, but recent actions speak louder than events that took place 35 + years ago.

Put politics aside, the only candidate that is putting America infront of themself, is Obama. Face it, he is much better than either McCain or the real Clinton.
