Romney opens up about President Hinckley, Mormonism

either way, it is sad that Mr Romney must make religion an issue. Even that DN puts a clearly partisan article in under LDS Newsline is a sad commentary and the exploiting of President Hinckleys death.

All but one of the comments on this story were deleted because after further review they were found off topic.

Romney no more exploits the death of Hinckley than any other political or other influential leader who comments on Hinckley's death. Senators, House Memebers and others made similar comments to Romney and didn't get accused of "exploiting" Hinckley's death. People in Romney's position are expected to make comments about special people in their lives or the lives of others. When the Pope died, comments were made there as well, without the accusation of exploitation.

Everytime I turn around, there is some nucklehead who tries to turn everything into partisan politics and anti someone.
Let's forget the politics folks and mourn a great spiritual leader, a gracious man, a wonderful devoted father, instead to all of this hate talk.

I really liked this article, it was tastefully done in showing how normal we Mormon's are and it also was nice to have that comparison of the Prophet and the Pope. I respect that Romney will be at the funeral and I respect that there is more positive dialog about the Mormon church, win or not, Romney has earned my respect.

I thought this was a good article. I am glad that Romney is not shying away from mentioning his Mormoness. I think this gives him a better chance, people will learn it one way or the other, but if he is open about it than it will seem more normal.
To the people who gripe about how this article is in LDS newsline, LDS newsline is not the Church News, it is meant to have articles that relate to the church, they do not have to relate much, no one is forcing you to read an article if you don't like it, and this article was clearly labeled truthfully as to waht it was.

I am pleased to learn that Brother Romney will take time from his campaign to attend the funeral service for our beloved prophet Gordon B. Hinckley. To do so demonstrates loyalty, integrity, and priorities in the proper order. I pray the cameras will focus on those taking part in the service and allow the Romney family to pay their respects privately as members of the church.

I definitely agree with the messages from CM, Anonymous, Mojules & others....Mitt Romney simply acknowledged his appreciation for President Gordon B. Hinkley- as a wonderful leader who has been an inspiration not only to him, but to others around the world. The timing...well, we never know when it's our time to leave this eartly life...it just so happened that Prophet Hinkley's time was now...and Mitt Romney happened to be engaged in a political campaign for the highest position in this great country of the United States of America! Only our Heavenly Father knows of the heart and mind of each of us, as it is not our place as human beings to be the judge.

I am very happy that Mitt Romney and family attended the funeral. It is only respectful as others have said, that we pay tribute to those of high importance. President Bush even sent message of thoughts and prayers that was read by Pres Thomas S. Monson, we are a democratic nation with Love for Mankind, why else would would send our men and women to other countries, if we did not believe in our thoughts and traditions of a FREE Democracy? As others stated earlier when the Pope died we don't condemn others if they are Catholic, and their belief. President Hinckley served many years in serving others in Countries, just like President Bush has done, as other presidents. We don't condemn the leader we had that was Catholic (President John F. Kennedy). As he served well, just as any of the others if we but believe and have faith in Our Country. We all have our love and devotions tied with GOD if we are Christians. Let your conscience serve you, not religion.

I was pleased that the Romney family attended Pres. Hinckley's funeral. They came to show their love and respect, and I expected no less from them.

It was interesting that the writer said that it showed Romney's "stature" in the Church that he attended the funeral. He failed to mention that the funeral was held in the 21,000 seat Conference Center--lots of people with "stature" in the Church by his standard, I guess. He's actually just trying to provoke a backlash against Romney by evangelicals. He's an extremely vocal McCain supporter, anti-Romney journalist at Politico.com.

All of which means little to those of us who love Pres. Hinckley and will miss his wisdom, inspirational guidance, and hearing his touching testimony of the Savior.

I do think Mitt is the best candidate in the race for the presidency by far. We are fools if we pass up this outstanding, talented, and decent man. He has so much to offer, and we need him badly to straighten out the mess in Washington, and keep the nation safe.

These are dangerous times, folks. Donate, volunteer, vote! We need Romney in '08!
