I wish Huckabee and Paul would drop out of the race and allow the voters to really decide who they want to represent them in November. It seems ridiculous that a candidate can pick up so many early votes in somewhat big states with only a 27 or 30% portion of the overall vote. This is especially problematic in states like Florida, which awards 100% of their delegates to the so-called "winner".

It appears to me that Huckabee will stay in long enough to deny Romney the chance to pick up the conservative voters who would never support McCain due to his past support of non-conservative policies.

If McCain gets the nomination, I will have to re-consider my support for the Republican party. I've felt alienated by a lot of Bush's policies (big spending, support for amnesty for illegals, etc...).

Based on how the party establishment is treating the more conservative members (Romney, Paul, Tancredo), it really seems that the conservative wing is being disenfranchised. I would be willing to vote Democrat during this upcoming election to send a message to the Republican leadership that they are not representing me anymore.

This debate proved that McCain has the ability to look at a lie and turn and give you three reasons why it is true. He is the slipperest eel since Bill Clinton slimed onto the scene.

Some of the backroom deals he is cutting with his fellow politicians like Huckabee, Guiliani, Crist, and Swartzaneger are especially troubling. Each of these clowns has been promised something to betray principle and throw in with McCain. Don't you just wonder what he has promised each of these people? Huckabee, Guiliani, and Crist have probably been promised positions within a McCain administration.
McCain owes a lot of political debts and we the American public will have to pay them if he is elected. Romney owes no such debts.

Romney is the only person who has run since Reagan who would be as good as or better than Reagan.

Another point is this so-called "flip-flopping". McCain changes his positions on an hourly basis but has the gall to accuse Romney of doing just this. Sure Romney changed a couple of positions because he was wrong. McCain "changed" his positions on amnesty to temporarily fool the public. Mitt, please save us from this awful man.

McCain is anti-Utah | 2:15 a.m. Jan. 31, 2008
Anyone who has a long enough memory will recall that Senator McCain called the money for the pre-Olympics work on I-15 "pork barrell." This coming from a man who represents a state with some of the finest federal highways in our country. I wonder which Washington insider voted for those Arizona highway funds? Perhaps Senator McCain, from Arizona?

Romney, on the other hand, worked to make the Olympics profitable, so the average Utahn wasn't paying for the Olympics for years to come.
McCain a smarmy lier. | 2:16 a.m. Jan. 31, 2008
I was also a supporter of Senator McCain for President. I am no longer.

For some reason I looked the other way when he stood smiling beside his mother while she vilified Mormons.

I cannot look the other way when he lies about Governor Romney's position on time tables for withdrawal in Iraq. He raised that point in a timely manner to let the lie hang in the air so he, Senator McCain, could win military votes in the panhandle of Florida. He is disingenuous, he is a lier, and our Governor supports Senator McCain who is using such tactics. It was the worst kind of dishonest, Washington insider politics.

McCain a porkbarreller | 2:21 a.m. Jan. 31, 2008
McCain is a senior Senator who was in the middle of the Republican pork barrelling which has spent us into record deficits. When retirees receive drastically reduced Social Security benefits because our taxes are going to pay off the debt, Senator McCain and his pork barrell buddies will be collecting nice, fat, Senatorial pensions.

He's a slug, and he'll "gun boat politic" our country into debt and ruin. While other countries are working to become economic powers, McCain still sees our country as a military super-power, and those of his ilk will waste our money and our young men making enemies across he globe.
Smit with Mitt | 3:00 a.m. Jan. 31, 2008
Mitt did a great job tonight. I have always been a McCain fan until tonight. He has twisted the intent of what Governor Romney was saying regarding timetables, as he was grasping at straws. I thought McCain was more honest than this. McCain has flip-flopped on many more issues. There is a LONG way to go and Mitt is still my choice. We are lucky to have someone of his brains and calibre to run for President.
Okie | 3:09 a.m. Jan. 31, 2008
I really feel sorry for our country to think that McCain could be our President. I will not vote for him. He is so sure of himself. And I didnt like his snide, rude comments at the debate last night. Romney looked and acted like a Presdident. I am proud of him for taking McCains remarks and proving him wrong. I like Mitt Romney, even though I don't agree with everything he says. he is nearest to being a President that we have running in the race on either side of the parties. WE may not get him but I will vote for him.
mindzeye | 3:28 a.m. Jan. 31, 2008
McCain is a mean-spirited, lying old codger who loves to play on the usual sympathies voters have for war vets. Romney and Huckabee are far more qualified to be president. I'd rather vote for Barrack or Hillary than McCain because they are openly Democratic and McCain is a closet Democrat.
Anonymous | 3:42 a.m. Jan. 31, 2008
Romney is smart, strong, confident and has America's best interest at heart. Every one of these candidates have changed thier minds on issues over the years but McCain insists on portraying Romney as the only one who has done so. And since when did stating facts about a candidates record become an 'attack'? McCain outright lied about Romneys record last night and Romney categorically corrected McCain on those lies. McCain looked bad last night.
Bob G | 4:33 a.m. Jan. 31, 2008
Vote RON PAUL and save the american people.
If you want to save the country, the USA, vote "RON PAUL" for President. John McCain and Mitt Romney support the presence of illegal aliens and open border policies for the illegals to penetrate and victimize the American people. Ron Paul is the only candidate that wants to reagin the soverignty of the United States and also put government back in the hands of the people, not a business owned government that we have had for too many years. We are seeing the results of business in control of government and the economy, now we need some real leadership and backbone in government that we can get with RON PAUL at the helm. He is being backdoored by the news media and political manipulation because he stands for the people which none of the other candidates espouse, democrat or republican.
Too bad | 5:16 a.m. Jan. 31, 2008
It's really a shame that the American people have decided it's okay to vote away someone's liberty. I'm still amazed that so many are sucked into the mass delusion that it is just for one man to take the fruits of another man's labor. That's what most people vote for today.

I will never understand why McCain thinks he has a right to put words in Romney's mouth. Why can't American voters see what a crock this man is?

In my entire life, I have never voted for a Democratic Presidential candidate, but I will this year should McCain come out with the nomination. This man is completely unimpressive and too OLD to be president.
russ | 6:23 a.m. Jan. 31, 2008
The McCain-Romney square off last night reminded me of a basketball game late in the contest. (Huck and Ron need not apply anymore... they can go sit on a bench). McCain has taken the edge, the lead, and has decided to make Romney play his game: national defense, support for more war, etc. Smiling, ducking, running. Lieing. McCain has the ball and he does not want to give it up. He has old "MO" on his side.

You see this when a team gets ahead by a few points and then changes their game to keep the ball, wait, patiently wait for the other team to foul, etc. Wait for your opponent to make a mistake.

Is Romney powerless against this new strategy? His adviors know that he is in trouble. So look for a hard foul, or a couple of 3 pointers to try to catch up. Coming from behind is very difficult on the political field of basketball.

McCain also is a senior, very senior actually, and he knows what to do. Mitt, warm up the 3 point shooters, and change your press. Otherwise, the tournament belongs to the senior experienced team.

Rah! Rah sisboombah!!
Ex McCain supporter | 6:32 a.m. Jan. 31, 2008
I have to admit, I used to be a fan of McCain. But I have not appreciated his tactics of late, trying to twist the words of Romney. It's unbecoming and almost childish. Romney took some shots earlier and he's paying for it now but he never came across as a puerile miscreant. I could have voted for McCain before but my vote is now going to Obama. I'm too liberal for Romney but I respect him and appreciate what he could have done.
Republican_I_Think | 6:32 a.m. Jan. 31, 2008
I Think I'd vote for Obama before McCain. If the choice is between two liberals, I'll take the one who is less a part of the good old boys club.
Oh Goody | 6:39 a.m. Jan. 31, 2008
Wow, I can't wait for McCain to run against Hillary. Talk about the lesser of two choices. I've been saying that DC is broken for years and the people in America want to stick a career politician in there to fix it? Yeah, doesn't make sense to me either. Oh well, I guess I'll sit back and watch the economy rot and my taxes go up. Yippy.

No to John Mcain | 6:53 a.m. Jan. 31, 2008
As a lifelong Republican I can honestly say that John Mcain as President scares me more than Hillary or Barak Obama. At least with either of those two in power, the opposistion on the right will be galvanized. The liveral democrats ability to further any of their socialist agenda will be limited. With the RINO John Mcain we will be on a slippery slope toward Socialism, Meximericanada, limited free speech and a multitude of other liberal policies that he has championed during his tenure as Senator. Mcains claim that he was a soldier in the Reagan army is laughable. NO TO JOHN MCAIN!!

After watching the debate last night...if McCain is the nominee, I don't think I can in good conscious vote Republican or Democrat.
Kyle from AZ | 7:22 a.m. Jan. 31, 2008
If the Republicans put up John McCain the Senator from my home state for President I will leave the Republican party as that will be acceptance that the entire party has shifted to the left. A shift I cannot stand by and accept.
Enough | 7:29 a.m. Jan. 31, 2008
McCain and Romney need to start talking about the issues. I already know how they feel about each other and the "lies" each have told about each others positions. What I want to know is how are they going to fix the infrastructure, how they are going to address the growing number of people without health insurance, how they are going to address social security, etc. If they keep it up and then continue it when they are facing a Democrat, I will vote for Obama. There is no way to know where he stands either, but at least he gives inspirational speeches. Come on John and Mitt, I want to be a Republican.
Mc Cain...Lies | 7:31 a.m. Jan. 31, 2008
McCain is a liar. I can not believe the lies he spins about Romney setting a date to pull out of Iraq, EVEN AFTER the debate where he clearly stated he wanted to pull them out but only where success was gained. McCain has stepped to a new low. How can WE trust a president that lies at any point to get ahead. If you want a dishonest president, nominate McCain. He has out spent his days, it is time for McCain to expire. He is not old, he is ancient. He knows it, that is part of the reason he lies.
Fight for what's right | 7:38 a.m. Jan. 31, 2008
So, what are we going to do? Are we going to give up or will McCain's antics dishearten us and prevent us from letting people know what Mitt really stands for? Let everyone in your address book know that by voting for Huckabee they are really voting for McCain.

If we want conservative values, vote for Romney. Don't let McCain split the vote. Remember, "A house divided against itself cannot stand." The Republican party divided against itself will not preserve the conservative values the majority of us espouse. Our children's future is grim if we do not defeat McCain and the democrats.

Those of faith, fast and pray for Romney and his advisors that they will know how to overcome the wiles of McCain and that people's hearts and eyes will be opened to what is truly in McCain's heart.
Gretzky | 7:35 a.m. Jan. 31, 2008
Hillbillary will win the nod for president. the Deathstar machine is up and running and the rebel forces have no idea at the publican premises. McAint will not win the presidency. Romney is clearly the best choice but Huckabee and Paul have prevented him from succeeding due to Huckabees bigotry and Paul's silliness.
Makes Sense | 8:00 a.m. Jan. 31, 2008
I can see why liberals and moderates are all endorsing McCain. Its a win-win situation. It doesn't matter who wins the election. Obama, Hilary or McCain, there will be a Liberal in the White House. Go figure? What is the Republican party thinking?
Fracturing | 8:07 a.m. Jan. 31, 2008
John McCain is a man who takes a one-line quote, add his perception and agenda, call it truth, and then spin it to conservative Americans and call it truth. I cant stand the man. By the way the John, what is wrong with running the Fed. Government like a business? What is wrong with making a profit? Is not a good leader also a good manager? Does not every program, i.e, battle need a plan? Should not our military presence in Iraq have plans time tables to measure progress? Oh, I get it, John, wander aimlessly and continue spilling soldier blood. Also John, you who wants to be commander-in-chief; Ronald Reagan, who you staunchly say, you are like, never wore a uniform. He was an actor, for heck sakes. McCain makes me want to hurl. But, is Obama or the Bhillary Clintons a better choice? What are our choices? Where has conservative thinking gone? What has happened to the Republican party? What is truth?. What are we, Americans, going to do about this mess? How have we, Americans, conservatives, Republicans, allowed this chaotic fracturing to occur?
McCain is a DEMOCRAT! | 8:21 a.m. Jan. 31, 2008
How can we see this any differently. You know how they say that Romney is the least favorite among his party, I can not see why, unless the Republicans have more Democratic values than we think. McCain seems to be the most liked my the other candidates, but Romney is the brightest nominee. He would change the country, McCain would fizzle faster the nastiest soda. He is everything we hate about Bush, and that is what he would be like if made president.

MITT ROMNEY -
Loyal, Intelligent,
Hard Working, Solver of Problems both Economic and Moral,
Affluent enough to not be beholden to any special interest group.
Young enough and willing enough, to handle the job as President. (He even looks Presidential)
Near perfect as a man could be!

AND ALL THIS IS PROVEN not by political manuvering...but by past record.

WAKE UP AMERICA!

just joe | 8:20 a.m. Jan. 31, 2008
I think those movers and shakers who are behind McCain, have agreed to pay Huckabee's bills in order for him to stay in, with or without Huckabee's knowledge---just to keep Romney from the nomination.
Frustrated American | 8:28 a.m. Jan. 31, 2008
The way I see it, if the American people are stupid enough to elect the RINO, liar, scumbag McCain, they have it coming. All we hear is about how awful things are going in Washington, yet they are willing to elect someone that has been a part of the problem for far too long.

I don't agree with John McCain on many policies, however, the thing that really bothers me is the way comes right out and lies, and also does it in such a sneaky manner, like 2 days before the Florida primary. Also he is constantly saying how we shouldn't elect someone who flip-flops. Sure Romney has changed positions on a couple of issues, but he isn't changing positions on a daily basis like McCain often does.

I will not vote for Hillary or Obama. However if I really had to, I would rather vote for them than McCain. I don't agree with anything they stand for, but at least they stand for something. McCain on the other hand is a sheep in wolf's clothing.
Mark | 8:33 a.m. Jan. 31, 2008
I was listening to Sean Hannity on KSL and Hannity all but endorsed McCain. The Republican Party is closing ranks around McCain.

Huckabee is NOT keeping evangelicals from voting for Romney. They'd vote for McCain over Romney. Look at the polls, folks.

McCain leads in the polls when matched up against Hillary Clinton or Obama. He could really win this thing.

Most Americans don't trust Mitt Romney. I don't think it is his religion as much as it is his political record and personality. Mitt Romney has a great family and business record, but lacks the common touch. I don't know if Mitt knows who he really is. He is NOT a conservative, so he comes off as disingenuous.

McCain is a moderate, but he knows that and we know that. He also stood up to the Bush admin. on torture, has crossed party lines on various issues, etc. But Americans KNOW McCain. They don't know Romney.

Romney governed in the most liberal of the states. He has executive experience, McCain does not. McCain was not straight talk with his answers last night, why? He has no clue about the economy, he did not offer new ideas about expanding the economy, or formulate fresh ideas about getting the country out of this recession. He simply is narrowminded, his answer was disappointed and the Dems will devour and slap him for his lies and ill tricks if he gets the nomination.

Mitt Romney is the only Republican candidate who can beat either Obama or Hillary. McCain looked silly and was caught in his lies. Romney looked more presidential and is more Reagan-esque than any other candidate.
ScottAZ | 8:55 a.m. Jan. 31, 2008
To Makes Sense....you exactly right. Not once have I seen a clip of Romney 'correcting' McCains lies last nighton any of the stations. The night before the debate on Hannity and Colmbes Chuck Norris (Huckabees cheerleader) on and doing nothing but trashing Romney as a flip flopper and accused him of trying to buy the White House. No issues were debated. And THAT was on Fox! Its worse on the main stream media outlets. You better believe the Democrats want McCain running for the Republicans.
Anonymous | 8:55 a.m. Jan. 31, 2008
I can't stand this McCain character and his tactics. He is so hypocritical! Romney has clearly stated differences between him and his opponents. I think that makes McCain feel insecure. He's so defensive about the so-called "attack ads" that he feels that he needs to return and make personal attacks on Romney. I can't see a man with his lack of tack and self-control or with his pathetic sarcasm in the white house. Well, I guess I can if we want things to get worse. He will lead this country further down the hole it's going into, not out of it. I'm with the people that say that if it's between McCain and Obama, then it's Obama.

Romney on the other hand is very impressing. He shows that even though he's getting the heat from all the candidates, that he can handle it with exceptional composier. He's stong under fire, and I think he has the leadership skills to run this country. He makes plans and sticks to them. He doesn't give up. He's smart.

I just hope that McCain isn't the front runner for the race. We would be in serious trouble if he were elected president.
jvw | 8:50 a.m. Jan. 31, 2008
I've always voted republican; but if McCain gets the nomination, I will vote for Obama or not vote at all! I am tired of politicians! Romney seems to be the most upfront politician in a long time. I am also tired of the media giving unequal time to the candidates. The broadcasters need to report the news and quit giving their opinions...yes, I am LDS, but that is not why I support Romney. My mother is not LDS; but supports Romney too!
Ken Baguley | 8:57 a.m. Jan. 31, 2008
Let's face it. McCain lied, causing Romney to defend himself. McCain has nothing to offer except his old unaccomplished experience as a Senator. He did help with the surge...For that we must be appreciative...It works. Is that enough for us to see through his lack of presidential ability? Come on! Romney has a thorough background to get the job done. He's had to battle the press and his competition. Jealousy! Night and day you torture them.
Get a grip | 9:01 a.m. Jan. 31, 2008
First let me say I support Romney because I am a fiscal conservative and I think he is the best economic choice. However, McCain is not a bad alternative for the Republican party. You all talk like it is always a conservative vs. liberal battle. I disagree. The vast majority of us are somewhere in between. McCain is not a liberal. He is a consistent moderate who will support some issues by leaning to the right and some to the left. Everything is not just black and white. Complex problems require compromising solutions which can work for both sides. The most important thing is to find people who can get work done in the polarized Washington environment. I think Mitt could, but I know McCain can. I hope Mitt wins, but I can support McCain if is the nominee.
To Mark | 9:11 a.m. Jan. 31, 2008
You are right on the money. If a conservative paper in his home town won't endorse him, should I? I am an UN-AFFILATED conservative;I will vote for a Democrat before I would vote for Mr. Romney and it has nothing to do with religion.
About Sean Hannity | 9:17 a.m. Jan. 31, 2008
Re:Mark

It sounds like you only caught the first half of Sean Hannity yesterday. I didn't actually hear the show, but I heard all about it from my husband. He told me how Hannity got on and basically endorsed McCain and went into the reasons why and how the party was evolving.

Well it comes down to it that Sean Hannity was actually putting on an act to make a point about how badly American will be heading if McCain gets the nomination.

His overall point was that the true conservatives need to be stronger than ever in order to keep our country headed in the right direction.
Get a grip | 9:21 a.m. Jan. 31, 2008
You so called "conservatives" who will vote for Obama over McCain show how irresponsible you can be if you don't get your way. Rather than maintain some balance of power in Washington, you would rather hand control of Congress and the White House over to the democrats if your guy can't get the nomination. That will really help your cause. A lot of damage can be done in four years, so keep up your stubborn and unforgiving stance and you deserve what you will get.

Mr. Get A Grip | 9:39 a.m. Jan. 31, 2008
By stating that you are a fiscal conservative you are implying that you are a social liberal, and as one brilliant conservative mind once noted that you cannot be a social liberal and a fiscal conservative. They are a contradiction of terms. The I am somewhere in the middle philosophy (Centrist) is the one currently implemented in Washington. These liberal light policies are the cause of complex problems because they do not recognize the fact that the true nature of legitimate government is limited. Conservatism is the mandate of freedom and liberty. Anything more or less than this leads to tyranny and misery for all. John McCain has adopted this philosophy along with the majority of the rest of Washington. Let the state of current affairs stand as a witness of that philosophy. All liberal or liberal light (Centrist) philosophies fuel the fire to destruction to a slower or faster degree, but it is inevitable that our freedoms go with it in direct proportion.
