I think Huckabee's votes would have gone to Romney, if Huckabee was not in the running. I also think those votes will continue to plague Romney by being bled off in the super tuesday states.

People, stop looking @ TV and believing everything
the media tries to "spoon feed you". There was
voter fraud in Florida w/Independents breaking down
the will of campaign workers w/words of "I want a
chance to vote" EVEN THOUGH THAT BREAKS FLORIDA LAW
so what do you expect when the law is broken??????
There's no difference between McCain and Clinton; the
philosophy is the same!!!!!!!!!! Stand strong, vote
wisely, and be prayerful!!!!!!!!!!
Pre-emptive war in scripture | 10:56 a.m. Jan. 30, 2008
No pre-emptive wars in scripture? You must be forgetting the entire Book of Joshua.

Not that I'm condoning or justifying anything, I'm just saying that political issues are rarely cut-and-dried with easy answers, even with answers that can be found in the Bible.

I read some of these comments and can not believe why any of the readers would support John McCain. I have lived here in AZ now for a while where John McCain was a senator. He is a horrible politician and someone who will do the same things George Bush has done, 1)fail to provide a solution to all the illegal immigrants in our country. 2)fail to fix the health care system. 3)spend more money on a war that has no end in sight becuase of lack of leadership and 4)continually dig a whole for our economy to where we can't get out. I frankly don't know if any presidential canidate can overcome these four problems but I have no faith at all in John McCain after seeing him act the part of politician here in AZ.
CB | 11:11 a.m. Jan. 30, 2008
I will not vote if McCain is our candidate. I would rather see the Demo's screw up this nation, than someone who calls himself a Republican, having demonstrated by his un-conservative behavior that he is anything but. McCain will be another Dole, he will look tired and old and in the end he will not be able to keep up the pace needed.
I'm amazed at the ego of men who can't look in the mirror and see and accept that there is a 'season and time' and frankly McCain is beyond that point. If he really cared for this nation, he would accept that, step down and make way for the next generation.
No Way | 11:26 a.m. Jan. 30, 2008
McCain is just an older Geroge Bush. If you want four more years of that vote McCain!.
whatever | 11:22 a.m. Jan. 30, 2008
Romney has never lied (don't always believe the media bias) and Romney has never spoken badly about any other candidate (like McCain and Huckabee have). He has only shown differences in their policies. If McCain, the hypocrite that he is, gets the Nomination I will still vote for Romney as a write-in, but I believe that McCain will stumble (in a big way). It's just a matter of time.
Return to Michigan | 11:32 a.m. Jan. 30, 2008
My vote goes to Romney, but I say if he doesn't become our president, he should move back to Michigan and run for governor. His expertise in business could really help out his home state. Just a thought. We Michiganders could use him.
russ | 11:41 a.m. Jan. 30, 2008
to Wayne Perry: Huck's votes would not have gone to Romney. And never will. Huck represents a very conservative Christian wing of the republican party. Almost loners in our society. He represents people who know they and only they are right on every important social and political and religious issue. Along comes Mitt, who represents another set of people, who really know that only they are right on every important social and political and religious issue. Unfortunately, Mitt's group has said that only they are the chosen people. Insultingly so at ever doorstep they can.

That kind of sets Huck's people on fire. It makes their backs straighten out and puts determination in their step. Not even in a bad dream would I ever think that Baptists and like-Baptists would rally around a guy who when serving a Mormom mission told people that his way was the only way to the top celestial kingdom.

Huck's fan club will stay home before they push for Mitt. Some will go to McCain due to the military record (fighting communism). Mitt does not have one, remember. Huck's people are never going to be Mitt's people. True believers do not change.
Obama | 11:40 a.m. Jan. 30, 2008
Disenchanted Republicans,
If McCain gets the nomination give Obama a chance. He could be what America needs!
Sarah | 11:54 a.m. Jan. 30, 2008
I'm LDS, but will not vote for Mitt Romney. His stance on many issues (immigration, war, torture, abortion, stem cell research, etc.) either doesn't currently conform with LDS teachings, or hasn't until just recently, and frankly, his petty behavior throughout this entire campaign isn't something I want to endorse with my vote.

McCain's track record is more consistantly conservative than any of the other GOP candidates in the race, yet he's seen as the "liberal" choice. Could that possibly be because he actually sticks to his convictions and doesn't change his policies based on what is popular at the moment? Look up the voting histories, and you'll see that McCain is the most conversative voter in the group.

He's currently the only Republican that I, as an LDS woman who pays attention to what a candidate has and is currently saying, rather than what his or her religion is, feel comfortable voting for. Florida made the right choice. The only way I would vote for Romney is if it came down to a race between Hillary and him. I would happily vote for Obama, who is the most liberal of the group, before Romney. He's not what I'm looking for.
whatever | 11:55 a.m. Jan. 30, 2008
No one should vote for Obama. He clearly (as seen during the State of the Union Address) has no respect for the "office" of the president. You can differ on policies and opinions, but for heaven sake be respectful and patriotic.
Mc | 12:05 p.m. Jan. 30, 2008
Russ, if what you say is true, why did exit polls yesterday show that Romney got more of the Evangelical vote than Huckabee did? Seems like Evangelicals have more religious tolerance than you give them credit for.
GO MCAIN !! | 12:06 p.m. Jan. 30, 2008
Mcain 08 .. John MCain for PRESIDENT 08!
It's Over | 12:16 p.m. Jan. 30, 2008
Queue the fat lady. Romney is done.

I think it is funny that commenters are saying that McCain isn't conservative enough blah, blah, blah. That makes me chuckle. Have you read and watched the videos of what Romney said to get elected in Massachusetts, or is that Taxachusetts I always get confused? If you have read and seen what he said you know that he was a liberal candidate with an "R" next to his name on the ballot.
Rob | 12:17 p.m. Jan. 30, 2008
This is sad! Over and over people are claiming that they will vote Democrat in 2008 because they would rather a Democrat screw up the nation than a Republican. I don't want anyone to screw up the country - regardless of party. Put loyalty to the nation ahead of party loyalty. Also, if you think there is no difference between John McCain and Hillary Clinton, you just haven't been paying attention - or you are just crying in your beer.
To Romney and Moses | 12:22 p.m. Jan. 30, 2008
to (Romney and Moses) "Search for it. It's on the Internet. I can't tell you where." That had to be the best comment of the day. Do us a favor, don't have any children
re: sarah | 12:26 p.m. Jan. 30, 2008
you must of gotten excommunicated or got some issue bringing the church up. we, if not all have study the history and issue. perhaps you should dig a little deeper regarding mccain foul mouth and dishonesty. and if you were on the top of your game explain why the democratic candidates continue to validate mccain as the leading republican candidate. that is because they would wip his butt back to his friend juan in mexico in the general election. remmeber this man has ran for the white house before. tell me why he did not win? and when you are looking for a job next year please remember that you voted against Mitt.
St. John | 12:28 p.m. Jan. 30, 2008
good one (To Romney and Moses) May he spare us from any more critical thinkers, I mean idiots, like himself
Anyone but Romney | 12:29 p.m. Jan. 30, 2008
Romney won't win anyway. I'm sure that one of his proposals is to ban all rated R movies, ban all beer, etc.

Laughable you mormons who want Romney as president.
Scott | 12:23 p.m. Jan. 30, 2008
Romney is hardly beaten. In fact he is just warming up. Florida reired military voted for McCain but the US is in dire straits economically and only Romney can get us back on track. You will see the swing in the next few weeks.
re: To Romney and Moses | 12:27 p.m. Jan. 30, 2008
Good one, may we limit the offspring of those individuals with such an I.Q. as the person with that comment. Or at least take away his vote
russ | 12:28 p.m. Jan. 30, 2008
To Mc: I saw that show too and did not believe what they said and here is why. The definition of what is and was and who is an evangelical is open. I have lived in the south. How did they ask the question? Most Christians in the south think they are evangelical! Did they have to prove it to the surveyer? How? I am evangelical, but not like Huck or some others. I will not vote for Huck because he easily crosses (no pun intended) the line between religion and secular. His ad with the cross light was insulting to even Baptists. Are Mormons evangelical? Hmmmm. Good question. No, the hard core Bible thumping southern evangelicals will not go to Mitt.

Unfortunately, in the very near future in this race we will see more mud than that found in a pig sty. In fact, it will begin to resemble a pig sty. And Huck's people will stay home rather than vote for Mitt. The water will get very muddy indeed. Sad, but true.

But hey, this is not a game for the weak. It is very serious politics. Not tiddly-winks.
re: To Romney and Moses | 12:36 p.m. Jan. 30, 2008
Good one: I need your phone number ( Romney and Moses ), I have something to sell you.
Romney and Moses | 12:33 p.m. Jan. 30, 2008
The reason my original comment on searching for Romney's comments on the Internet is so vague is because the DNews doesn't allow URLs or Web site names to be posted in comments, so I can't direct you to it. But if you go find it, you will see a clear video of Romney telling a reporter that God hasn't spoken to anyone since Moses "and maybe some other people." To refer to Joseph Smith, Gordon B. Hinckley and others as "maybe some other people" looks suspiciously like being ashamed of his religion for the sake of political expediency.
Common Sense | 12:44 p.m. Jan. 30, 2008
It has been interesting reading the comments about Senator McCain. If we are to believe what has been written then this man is both Clinton and Bush rolled up into one. To me, this is very confusing since Bush and Clinton are polar opposites. Which is it? Is he another Bush or another Clinton.

So far the attacks against him have been vague, emotionally based (he's not Mormon Romney!), or bringing up comprimises that he made in order to get things done. McCain did what he thought was right, despite politics or polls. When Romney did this, he was hailed by people of our state as a great man. When McCain does it, he is a traitor. Why? Are we so blind that we condemn a man just because he isn't Romney?

The time has come for us to face facts. McCain is the only one who can win for the Republicans. He has a tendency to put what he thinks is right above what is popular (something Bush claimed to do 4 years ago and was embraced by Utahns for). He has shown that he can comprimise and bring the divided country together again. Isn't that what we want?
Sarah | 12:47 p.m. Jan. 30, 2008
As a federal employee, I don't ever be out of a job regardless of who I vote for. Secondly, I have never had any form of Church disciplinary action taken against me, nor do I have "issues" with the Church. Thank you for just reinforcing all the negative stereotypes non-members have about us. You disagreed with me, so you insulted me and my spirituality. Well done, you must be proud.

Romney has voted pro-abortion in the past, McCain has not. Romney has voted to use aborted fetuses in stem cell research in the past, McCain has not. Romney supports using torture against mostly innocent detainees in Guantanamo, McCain does not. Just last week, the Church leaders asked for kindness in the immigration issue, remembering that there are children of Heavenly Father at the other end of the legislature. McCain does that, Romney does not. Both candidates have run ads that to supporters "only tell the truth", but to detractors, spread false accusations. The national, ap, and foreign presses largely claim that McCain is the only GOP candidate who can win the national election. Not Romney. And I don't care what type of language McCain uses in private, only in public.

Once again...don't always believe what the media tries to sell you. The exact quote was:

"Pre-Eminent Mormon Scholar Says Governor Romneys Comment Doesnt Contradict LDS Church. Jan Shipps, one of the pre-eminent Mormon scholars, says Romneys comment doesnt contradict LDS Church beliefs because he mentions that God spoke to some others, and he didnt just leave it at Moses. (Thomas Burr, Comment Appears At Odds With LDS Faith, Salt Lake Tribune, 12/22/07)"
Hannity NOW on KSL | 1:20 p.m. Jan. 30, 2008
Hannity knows which way the wind is blowing -- after trying to urge Huckabee to drop out, and relentlessly attacking McCain as a "liberal", Hannity is now admitting fault and praising McCain as Reagan's heir.

If Hannity throwing his support behind McCain in light of Florida's primary result isn't the proverbial writing on the wall as to Romney's campaign, I don't know what is.

This fight is OVER for Romney, and the Republicans have found their Nominee.

Hear and see for yourself the wonderful Mitt Romney bashing the orgin and central belief of his very own church.

Michael: I'm no fan of George Bush and his spending policies. The Far Left has no solutions to our energy problems other than to say conserve. We have our own resources that could be used. By the way, you didn't mention nuclear. Could you be part of that Far Left?
The rock | 1:59 p.m. Jan. 30, 2008
Not all is lost...Romney needs to win Missouri, (58 delegates), CT (30d), Montana (25d), Delaware (18d), and UT (36d) next week to offset some of the delegates in the WTA states (winners take all) in NY, NJ and AZ possibly going for McCain. He has to be very competitive in CA and the Midwest and remain strong the rest of the way.
McCain a senator from a border state, did he enacted a bill to secure the border? If there ever was one, did he fight to enforce it?
power to the people | 2:38 p.m. Jan. 30, 2008
Updated scorecard

McCain 97 delegates
Romney 74 delegates
Huckabee 29 delegates
Paul 6 delegates
Giuliani 2 delegates

Who's on first?
What is on second
I don't know is on third &
Today is catching ;)
dingo | 2:45 p.m. Jan. 30, 2008
for us TRUE reagan conservatives senator mccain is simply unacceptable. there is NO difference between a mccain presidency or a democratic one, none. he has never met a tax cut he liked (his voting record backs that up), he has never met a conservative issue he has not at one point bashed (once again look at his record), he has never met a democrat he did not agree with (again look at his record) and the judges he will appoint will be at best moderate and look what that has gotten us. is romney perfect NO, but as a TRUE conservative i will not vote for somone who is no better than a democrat. the best we can hope for is a brokered convention. God help this party if the stand for nothing moderates like mccain get control. in the end the GOP will be no better than the DNC a pandering soulless body begging to be liked by everyone and respected by none, and the moderate republicans like mccain and his ilk will have killed the reagan legacy for all time.
Wyoming Sharon | 3:02 p.m. Jan. 30, 2008
I have yet to hear any media comment about who is the true flip-flopper. McCain has flip-flopped on the tax-cuts, imigration - if you do your research you'll find more. It seems to me he's the one who has flip-flopped for political expediency. Romney "changed his positions" for entirely different reasons. Are we labeled flip-floppers if we smoke & then don't; drink and then don't; change employment; dislike asparagus, then love it; etc, etc. I think McCain changed his mind several times on who he wanted to be married to. Which brings me to another point. Put pictures of Ann Romney and McCain's wife side by side. Who reflects grace, dignity, and character and who looks like...well... maybe a barby doll type (oh that will get some response). What kind of person we are is reflected in our countenances from my own personal experience of 60+ years. The "First Lady" carries tremendous responsibility and I choose Ann for the job!! The media is rampant with comments from demo's that the repub. candidate they fear most is McCain. Anyone who buys that garbage needs a chick-up from the neck-up. Poor America the Great...are we losing you?
Wyoming Sharon | 3:10 p.m. Jan. 30, 2008
I meant "check-up from the neck-up". Sorry I hit the wrong key!
What is wrong with a moderate? | 3:14 p.m. Jan. 30, 2008
Who cares that McCain is a moderate, I think that this is exactly what our country needs right now. Only thing conservatives and liberals have accomplished is dividing our country even more. They put their party and agendas ahead of our country's needs.

I hear some people from each side who actually consider each other enemies. Imagine that, considering your fellow American is an enemy because they have different view points then yours.

This country needs to get balanced and the only way to get balanced is to get back on center. Obama, Hillary and Romney can't accomplish this, only McCain can. He has the resume that shows he can work with democrats and republicans. Some may see this as a weakness but I see it as one of his strengths. Time for you people to start voting for what is best for this country and not what is best for your party.
St. George | 3:20 p.m. Jan. 30, 2008
I say the whole of Utah shows the GOP establishment we will not stand for the bigotry of those like Mike Huckabee.

If Romney does not get the Nomination----then we should all 100% VOTE FOR HILLARY. After all she is the next best candidate in this field, she would be the first woman president, and she would take us in reverse from the Bush ruiness policies of the past 8 years.

No Romney nomination = all Utahns vote HILLARY
re: sarah | 3:44 p.m. Jan. 30, 2008
well it sound like an adulterous man heading to the white house. we will be looking for another blue dress soon. oh yeah did you know mexico is also voting for mccainn. yes everyone is a child of god so, lets get all of the plane, cars, boats and other type of transportation and bring them here. wait should not the saints of god stay in their own country and help build the kingdom there? sarah are you afraid that Mitt will get rid of your job because he wants to get rid of useless government program? of course not you want to keep on collecting hard working americans money through taxes.
re: sarah | 3:51 p.m. Jan. 30, 2008
"lets protect our border" said mccain. took him 25 years to get it right. does that sound like a smart man to you?
Re:Robert from NC | 3:58 p.m. Jan. 30, 2008
Peace? What does Mitt know about foreign affairs? I don't think the Olympics count as it was a sporting event and didn't have a whole lot of Middle Easterners.

Wake up and smell your tithing. As much fun as it sounds a Mormon isn't going to be elected president.
russ | 3:57 p.m. Jan. 30, 2008
Very fair question: what is wrong with being a moderate? Is it supposed to be "my way or the highway" about political matters? George Jr. has used that focus from day one and look where we are today. My goodness. My goodness.

I am sure that many things in life are really done best in moderation. How much salt do you put on your food? Should I boil the egg for 20 minutes? If a little fertilizer is good, more must be fantastic. Speed the car as fast as it can go? Never never think that the other guy has a point?

Moderation might be the key to having a great nation in the future. Ike was a moderate, no? Good repub? History says so-so. But the nation moved forward, and incomes went up, and... well, maybe we need an Ike? In retrospection, Ike comes out pretty good. Radical? No. Conservative values? No. Liberal? No? A leader for 8 years of prosperity? Yup.

hmmmmmmm. that is interesting. Hmm.
Anonymous | 4:01 p.m. Jan. 30, 2008
"God hasn't spoken to Man since Moses" said Romney. Took him just one statement to discredit his entire church.
dingo | 4:09 p.m. Jan. 30, 2008
RE: Whats wrong with a moderate?

the problem with moderate republicans is they dont stand for CORE conservative values. senator mccain sold out the first ammendment to "get along", he has strongly opposed every meaningful tax cut passed by republicans to "meet the democrats in the middle", his amnesty bill would have opened the borders and destroyed any hope of national security we have (the country rose up against that one and who opposed the country learning the truth? the democrats). instead of forcing the democrats hands on judicial nominations he engineered the gang of 14 instead of fighting on principle so he would be "respected". this is bad policy for the country. give up and dont fight so we can compromose on CORE conservative values.

that is the fundamental problem with republican moderates they do not take a hard stand on core republican beliefs. they need to be liked and needed to the point of selling out the things that make this country great, the rugged individual spirit, and the drive (the things reagan made alive again after pres carter) to be the best and believe in the individual.

God help the GOP if moderate republicans take control.

If Romney doesn't win | 4:20 p.m. Jan. 30, 2008
If Romney doesn't win I might as well vote for Donald Duck cause the any demoquack will do just about the same quality job.

That having been said VOTE DONALD NOT HILARY IF MITT LOSES!
Ted Owens | 4:38 p.m. Jan. 30, 2008
I just love reading the Romney apologists bash McCain. "Sore Loser" never had more meaning. McCain will win the GOP nomination. And if people aren't too sick of Bush to vote Republican, he'll win the White House. He is the most qualified, principled and ethical person in the race. Romney should read the writing on the wall that's been evident since before he began his quixotic quest.
Anonymous | 5:09 p.m. Jan. 30, 2008
And just how many years did it take Romney to figure out, "God hasn't spoken to Man since Moses"
(his direct quote) Does that sound like a good Mormon to you?
To : St George | 5:19 p.m. Jan. 30, 2008
If McCain gets the nomination I will not vote for Hillary but definately Obama.. Either way Utah should turn to a blue state just to show McCain that he stinks and has no idea what it means to take care of Illegals. For someone who lives in a border state to have NO CLUE he sure talks like he does. Like I said before he's a PATHOLOGICAL LIAR. The sad part about that disease is he actually believes what he says. Now that is just scary. Can you imagine how many people and how many countries all over the world he will offend with his stupid jokes(that only he finds funny) and his nasty language? If you thought Bush was lying to get a war started what do you think McCain will do? He sold a big fat lie to the military in Florida and they bought it. I hope Romney destroys him tonite in the debate. McCain is so jealous of Romney it's just not funny anymore. Romney is a smart educated man, and McCain is..... Well lets just not even open up that can of worms.
