Perhaps he could be completely honest about it and tell the Michiganians that their state is ushering in the new Depression.
The manufacturing sector of America's economy is clearly an end of an era.

Mitt's the Man | 2:23 a.m. Jan. 15, 2008
Mitt's the man to turn things around for Michigan. They will only benefit by voting for him today. He has an impressive record that proves he will do it. Good luck Mitt! You have my vote!

If Mitt fights for the auto industry like he fought for a woman's right to chose and gay rights (pledges he also made), then the auto industry is done for.

Thanks for the pessimism | 5:49 a.m. Jan. 15, 2008
To Anonymous:

It's people like you that will sit on the sidelines and cry that our economy is a lost cause. You, like most democrats (which I'm sure you are), are wrong! Let's elect leaders who will quit stifling our economy with tax increases and government regulations, and you'll see that our economy can rebound and be the envy of the world.

It's time for the silent majority to stand up and throw out the bums who won't make the tough decisions! Go Mitt.

Sounds synical, Problem is Walmart is much more to blame for this mess than Michigan. People have been in a Walmart Depression for a very long time it has little to do with cars.

Michigan is the first state to find out the full effects of NAFTA and the unequal trade arrangements with China. No Michigan resident can compete with either Mexican or Chinese wage structure. Add to that the "union busting" drive by conservatives and jobs have fled the state to the world economic low-wage sectors. Michigan is just the first state to see its manufacturing sector go abroad. Others will soon follow the trend despite promises of presidential candidates.

Mitt Romney already has won in one state and has the most delegates. How is it that the Deseret News leaves this postitve detail out of this story?

I kind of hope that Mitt becomes President. Then I can measure how much of this hyperbole in Michigan was just plain, unashamed pandering to people who have been hurt by Bush's economy. Not once was ush mentioned. Hmmmmm. Not once did Mitt mention that Detroit's designers were getting skunked by Toyota, etc. Not once. And to blame Washington... how trite. How full of hot air. And to not have gas mileage standards set by government? Then bring on $5 a barrel oil. Take out your wallet and leave at the gas station. Thank you, thank you. If the Koreans and the Europeans and the Japanese can build a car with high miles per gallon, why can't Detroit? Whoa... does that qualify as being unpatriotic to point that out?

Well, maybe pandering is where it is at. The race is tight. It is his home state, he continues to wear blue, and he has gathered the grandchildren for the photo op's. Yeah, I guess he has a chance after all. It's gonna be close.

And then what? Not SC for sure. Or Florida. Hmmmm. California? nah... problems on the horizon.

Is it the government's fault that the U.S. auto industry designes, builds, and markets cars that sell poorly?

Oh my gosh - I'm so glad there was another Mitt Romney story this morning. I woke up with this horrible nightmare that there were other people I could vote for this election coming up on the 5th of February. I was horrified. My church leaders discourage choice and I have tried to avoid it. But looking at deseretnews.com I have been calmed by the fact there is only one candidate. I can't wait to vote for him.

That first comment is so typical of all the Anonymous people in this country. They love to fault, to pull down, to deflate, to look for the dark lining. If something looks good then there is bound to be a chink in the hairdo somewhere. Let's find it and destroy them. Right. That seems to be the point of being Anonymous. No responsibility.

Let's turn it around. Let's choose a fighter. Let''s get someone elected that can rebuild. I wonder who could do that for America. Someone positive. Someone business minded. Sounds like a job for Super Mitt, able to rebuild in a single term, or two. Sounds like a good time for him. Go Mitt.

Let's see now. Mitt is a conservative Republican and he is going to have the Federal Government fix the Auto industry. The Auto Industry that has been destroyed by it's own unions. Wow! Mit seems to be a man for everybody, Democrats, Rebublicans, Socialists... I'll bet he could do it and not even raise taxes. He is the greatest candidate yet.

don't worry - be happy | 7:47 a.m. Jan. 15, 2008
The economic situation is and always has been controlled by 1% of the disgustingly rich who manipulate the whole scenario. (I thought EVERYBODY knew that?)
People today are losing their buying power by leaps and bounds and are left playing the "my political party is better than yours" stupid game instead of recognizing the situation for what it is.
To them I say, max out all your credit cards "keeping the economy afloat" if this makes you feel patriotic or something. I'm paring down, getting out of debt and telling my children "you really don't need that BMW to be happy in life."

Why is it taking so long for America to wake up and care for the American manufacturing industry in general? Greed has taken American jobs to China. Corporate American has benefited from hurting blue-collar jobs.

Its about time for America to punish multi-national corporations for taking American jobs oversees. Lets tax corporations for taking jobs elsewhere, lets tax boards, presidents, and executives for taking jobs. Lets reward business for bringing jobs back.

Most readers are educated, bright, and have jobs. Let us push the alarm bell now that if our manufacturing dies America's economy dies too.

If we don't have jobs and economic stability we don't have social stability. Free trade is not fair trade. The Republicans, Democrats, and greed have betrayed America.

Bring back American jobs, bring back a kinder America.

I am concerned that no politician is prepared, capable or able to fight for American manufacturing.

Mitt Romney may be just like Bush--unwilling to help America's manufacturing society.

Protectionism Works | 8:06 a.m. Jan. 15, 2008
The biggest economic misunderstanding is that tariffs were a major cause in the depression of '29. This is untrue. Tariffs protect a nation's industry when foreign countries dump their cheap products in another nation. McCain and Washington people sat back and watched this happen and our auto industry is being overtaken. Steps should have been taken to protect American manufacturing jobs and they were not. Gee, think it could be the lobbyist buying out our government. I am convinced that the American gov't today is corrupt on all accounts. We give money to dictators, prop up regimes, and then we end up paying a fortune in money and lives. Meanwhile, companies set up shop in foreign countries and produce cheaper products. Granted, states like Michigan need to cut taxes and unions need to understand the market economy. However, America should not subsidize the growth of emerging nations at the expense of middle income jobs.

I think Mitt can do the job.

I can't wait to see the look on all your silly faces when your boy Mitt loses in his own home state.

Maybe then (although I doubt it), you'll get it through your thick skulls that he's not going to be in the race for president.

Oh, the anticipation as the hours tick on by.

I hope you sent him lots of money! :)
