Winder is a good Sheriff who has inherited the bad legacy of an arrogant fool, Aaron Kennard. If Kennard hadn't thumbed his nose at the cities for all those years, Winder would have to deal with this problem today. Thanks, Kennard, you have given us 17 Mayberries.
Kennard not the problem | 5:09 a.m. Jan. 13, 2008
Anyone suggesting Kennard is the problem in this is nuts. Kennard had a deal that the cities had expected, Winder's first move was to axe that deal. Why? Because it would have cut his powers as Sheriff.

Winder wants the power of being Sheriff, something Kennard was fine with giving up in order to stop the bleeding. The arrogance is Winders, not Kennards.

Winder is worried that in the near future all he will be in charge of is the county jail

Having gotten poor service as a Magna homeowner for 16 years, I would hire my own police force in a minute. I spent a whole night trying to get an officer to respond to a complaint, and a week trying to get them to investigate a theft/forgery. The insincere apologies received after the fact did me no good. Cottonwood wants good service, and in my opinion and experience, that isn't what the Sheriff's office is used to providing. The new Chief in Cottonwood will have to answer, in real time, to people that can demand a resignation.

I am for Metro Police without question

Winder wants what the cities are taking from him - control of their own police. The only way a Metro type organization will work is if it is attractive to cities with their own forces already - UPD (that Winder killed and that this bill is NOT the same as) was more of a "stop the bleeding" not a true shot at a Metro force.
It's obvious Winder does "not know what to do" as quoted. He's not alone - many have shot for a Metro Police concept in SL Valley and failed. I don't know the answer either, but will jump behind anyone that comes up with a solution. Until then (and after too) it's incumbent upon each cities' leaders to provide the best services for their citizens - be it as a seperate agency or part of a group.

A Metro Police Department in SL Valley is WAY over due! Some of the best police departments in the country are Metro departments, just look at Las Vegas. Why? Because you get more resources and less overhead. More indians and less chiefs. We are paying 17 police chiefs anywhere from 80-100k a year. Just think if you only has one chief. How much money would we save? Do the math. Not only that but you would have specialized teams and detectives who were more experienced and trained at handling specific types of incidents.

I could go on and on about the benefits of a metro department because there are a lot. It is amazing to me that there isnt a bigger push for this, what it all comes down to is politics and greed. People need to stand up and demand this service. This bill is a waste of time and energy. We need bills promoting an entire consolidation not just some half A**ed attempt. The state needs to step in and do the responsible thing since the cities arent willing to.
The difference | 8:37 a.m. Jan. 14, 2008
The difference between Winder's plan for a UPD and the cities is basic. Winder feels the sheriff should be in charge of every officer, with no input from the leaders of the cities. Obviously, those leaders have problems with that, because when there is a problem with the police, who do you call? Not the sheriff, your mayor.
CH representatives realized this, and that was one of the driving forces to creating their own force. If Winder had tried to be more like Kennard, who understood what the cities concerns were, then CH probably would have never left, and we would already have a UPD. Don't be surprised if Holladay tries to join with CH in creating a joint force for both cities.
I agree we need to come up with a solution. But that solution has to come close to meeting the needs of all involved. Good luck to whomever can come up with a model that works for everyone. Compromise will be the key to success. This bill might help because it will make it so one person can't kill the whole thing.

I am surprised at all the cry babies! This isnt about Sheriff control, it's about local Mayoral power at the expense of the citizens.
There is abosolutely No Way a small local enforcement agency like CH could ever handle an emergency of more than one traffic accident at a time, let alone manage their own SWAT,Ivestigative Services,K-9,domestic violence, quality annual training and the variety of other services a Sheriffs consolidated deparment can offer. CH will be way over $5 Million to start up costs for their small department and will still not have all the other necessary services to protect their citizen in case of a real tradegy!!!
Mayors' should be Mayor's they are risking their citizens by treading on ground they know nothing about!!!!!!!
