Great article Lee. I think one reason for the many nasty headlines is that they are written by anti- Romney people who are hoping that by shouting gloom and doom about the Romney campaign they can create a self fufilling prophecy and effectively scuttle the Romney campaign.
First, Romney was the all-but-inevitable winner in Iowa in New Hampshire. Instead, in Iowa, Romney took enormous financial advantages, plus the fact that the other front-runners abandoned Iowa, and lost. Where he should have easily won big with a huge war chest, heavy TV campaigning, and massively superior ground operations, Romney lost big to a small-time candidate. In NH, Romney became the first Massachusetts candidate to lose the state. Second place, especially at those margins, are big losses, not wins.
Second, calling or even betting on an election based on 20-odd delegates makes little sense when the winning number is over 1200. It's like calling a basketball game after 30 seconds of play. 99% of the nation has yet to vote.
Finally, Romney who was the clear money front runner is struggling to keep his head above the water in his home state of Michigan. He even showed enormous weakness in having to pull his South Carolina and other market ads, while his staff reassured donors that their money would be returned.
Romney is NOT doing well.
