BYU parking ban is a no-go

The city doesn't want students renting homes in a particular area of town? What does that mean? Should the city ever be in the business of deciding which group of people live in which area? Can this really be the actions of a local government in a free society? Sounds like the social planners of Utah County are at it again. Way to go, comrades!

Jeremey Kidd, try to get into the real world. Cities and Counties already regulate who can live where through Zoning Laws. If a neighborhood is zoned for single unit dwellings, then homes in that neighborhood shouldn't have 50 students living in one house. Those type of laws are on the books. In a free society, a family has the right to live in their home without having undue problems. A bunch of students hogging all the parking infringes on the right of a family to live in their home without undue problems cause when anarchy prevails.

That being said, I live in Kearns and I have a family next to me that has 10 cars and about 20 people living in the house. They aren't students and don't rent. They park in front of my house all the time and I have to go over to their house and have them move their cars. It is very annoying to me and lowers my quality of life.

Think about that the next time you hog parking in front of someones home.

If residents living near the campus really consider students "A plague" they need to consider some things...
1. The benefits the students bring to Provo.
2. The parking problems around the football stadium on game day (most of whome are non-students).

Hey, the world is getting more crowded. In my lifetime cities will expand to a point where it's more feasible to start getting more dense.

How do they do it? Accessory apartments. And that means more on street parking it. We're just gonna all have to get used to it. Try driving in Los Angeles' first and second ring suburbs, and you'll see our future.

BYU students need representation on the Provo City Council. As a BYU alum, I am well aware of the city of Provo's disdain of BYU students. Many college towns throughout the US allow a student representive to sit on the city council. Provo should do the same. I loved BYU, but couldn't wait to get away from Provo.

Since I am on the subject of Provo, I think Provo cops need to stop harassing harmless, alcohol free, college students.

Since when do you have some sort of right to the street space in front of your house? You have some nerve to tell your neighbors to move their cars from a public parking space. I would have told you to get lost!

FYI Rant, Many of the city council members have children attending BYU. You obviously had a bad experience here, good thing you left! I have lived most of my life in Provo, attended BYU and lived along the no parking zone by Belmont. I asked for no parking signs installed--in my yard! I had 4 young children, I was tired of the students parking in front of my house, with their radios roaring full blast, with doors and windows open so that the entire block could hear while they held street socials after midnight.
When I was a student I tried to be respectful of those who lived around me. If you feel that as students you are somehow exempt from respecting the people you live around and that you somehow can park or live or do whatever you want just because you are a "student" grow up or um, LEAVE! Check it out, ALL CITIES HAVE NOISE, PARKING, & ZONING LAWS! No, really, they DO!
Also, watch the news, there are plenty of drunk BYU students causing trouble.
Students parking-365 days a year, Football-4/5 days a year, Educated people spelling it "Whome" priceless!

Hey, Mr. ARE-YOU-KIDDING-ME! BYU plays 6 home football games a year. And when you write "4/5" that means four-fifths not "4 or 5" as you seem to intend. I am also curious which news reports you watch that identify "plenty of drunk BYU students." The attack on other people's levels of education in a ridiculous on-line forum for responding to Deseret News articles always makes me smile! God bless all of us who ever have or ever will have to park in Provo!

Having any sort of parking permits and enforcements in a college town is utter foolishness. Not to mention any attempts to milk the students and legal residents for yet more money.

Provo thinks it owns BYU. Psshh. Provo wouldn't be as big as it is WITHOUT BYU.

Lest we forget COMMON SENSE: When one moves next to an airport, expect noise. Next to a farm, smell. Next to a large college campus, cars and parking problems. FACT: Over the years the Provo City Council has demonstrated disdain for students, such as now. Students seem to be "2nd class citizens," not worthy of full "human" status. ADVISE to students: Organize, elect one or more of your own to the city council. You have the power - exercise it! SOLUTIONS: How about the free bus passes that were so popular a few years ago? They create an incentive to not bring a car to Provo, and they minimize city traffic - Now that's being proactive! And what sense does it make to have students walking blocks to their homes at night when city streets are bare of parked cars? (Who "owns" those city streets anyway? - It's the taxpayers, and students pay millions in city taxes through their rents). BIG SOLUTIONS: Let's all try to be more neighborly, efficiently use public assets (streets), and treat students, permanent residents, and even landlords with full courtesy, respect and rights. We share the hive together, let's get along.
