Yes, National Treasure did pale in comparison. Nothing at all like the Part I. Part II isn't completely bad like most sequels. But it's pretty bad.
Barry | 6:09 a.m. Jan. 4, 2008
Hicks... get a life. It is a movie for crying out loud. Not a reality show.

Err... Barry, watching reality shows indicates you have a life?

Well, I thought part 2 was great and have heard the same response from many of my friends and family. I don't know what you were expecting. The acting was wonderful and the story line intriguing. I hope they continue to make these movies. Despite the fictional parts of the movies, a lot of American history, which has been researched by the writers of these movies. I got this information from watching interviews with the cast. It has made my children, and myself more interested in this Nations history. I hope for more to come!

I'd love to see the comeback of cartoon shorts in the theaters. What an idea!

I'm glad to see commentary on this short. It was wonderful, and we need more of them. I don't know how many kids really enjoyed it, but the adults in the audience were laughing (hooting!) out loud. We can all identify.

As for National Treasure, I though it was great too. Entertaining, PG, and some historical context thrown in too.

It's nice to be able to go to a show that you can recommend to your mom!

Chris:

Thanks for writing this great article! I haven't had more fun in a movie in years...watching that cartoon was a blast. It brought all my joy back from seeing it. Nothing more enjoyable than being part of something created at the highest level of one's craft and profession--which this was.
krj | 9:03 a.m. Jan. 4, 2008
I thought the short cartoon was outstanding. I hope that it means disney will continue in this direction. National Treasure was pretty good too
Loved it | 9:33 a.m. Jan. 4, 2008
The cartoon was awesome. I remember watching Disney shorts all the time just like that.

Thanks for writing this acticle!! I really LOVE Goofy & Gang and ALL of cartoon back on the screen was a GOOD MOVE!!
goofy fan | 10:15 a.m. Jan. 4, 2008
Although I love Goofy and the old cartoons, this one was too long. They could have shortened it by about two minutes and it would have been better. I love the return of Goofy, but it dragged a little.
George | 11:03 a.m. Jan. 4, 2008
Hey Goofy Fan - at 6 minutes this Goofy short is actually significantly shorter than ANY of its historical predecessors. Great job, Disney - Keep em' coming!
gonzo | 11:07 a.m. Jan. 4, 2008
I'm sorry but as a regular movie goer this cartoon almost ruined the whole experience for me. As goofy fan wrote it was WAY too long, and really I didn't find it humorous. Parts may have been, but it just went on and on and on and on. I'm all about the "short" film though, so try again Disney, but you didn't quite nail it as the journalist writing this article said. Make it shorter and more exciting for children and adults.
CarTune | 12:41 p.m. Jan. 4, 2008
I liked both goofy and Nat Tesoro 2

Heather | 12:59 p.m. Jan. 4, 2008
The Goofy short reminded me a little bit of Mickey's "Prince and the Pauper," how they brought the characters to life in their original and clever way. The same story people who worked on it (ie Joe Ranft and Roger Allers) also worked as story people on the early '90s Disney features, and some later moved on to Pixar. I think this Goofy cartoon is a good sign for Disney films to come.
Mimi | 1:11 p.m. Jan. 4, 2008
Programming Goofy with National Treasure gave many more adults an opportunity to see it than would have with Enchanted.

"the 2D look in this age of computer animation taking over is not dead."

Actually, is has never been dead. Underutilized and misapplied, yes, but not dead. Walt always emphasized that the medium is just the tool, that story is paramount. No amount of eye candy can make up for a bad story, and John Lasseter has certainly stuck to that concept. Disney and other studios just got so caught up in the magic and possibilities of 3D in the wake of Pixars's success that they let the story part get away from them. The glut of bad cartoons and cheap features done in 3D is everywhere evident. Having Lasseter at the helm of Disney feature animation is a move I applaud, and should herald many good things to come.

Actually, is has never been dead.

The Simpsons has been going strong for almost 20 years now.

I loved the short. It was retro while having a contemporary theme. It moved well, lots of great gags, and I bet you would have to watch it two or three times to catch them all.

Disney's "Princess and the Frog" will be a 2D feature, and I'm really looking forward to that. I'm betting a sequel to "Enchanted" will be made and at least some of that will be 2D.

I couldn't disagree with Chris more on this being an enjoyable and funny cartoon. I can't tell you how many times I rolled my eyes. In an age of over-consumerism, why pollute the field with even more images of having to have the biggest, best, and brightest? If the Jones' weren't hard enough to keep up with! I felt the cartoon didn't live up to the legacy of the original Disney cartoons and hope I don't see more of them attached to upcoming films.
Aaron | 3:31 p.m. Jan. 4, 2008
Jed, you apparently failed to notice that the cartoon was rather overtly mocking keeping up with the Joneses and other foolish parts of American culture. If you're going to the movies to learn how to be thrifty, you're at the wrong place, because you're giving your hard-earned money to Hollywood's cash cow. Lighten up.
BORED | 3:35 p.m. Jan. 4, 2008
Wasn't that awful!? I could understand if it was before a kids movie, but who above the age of 12 really wants to watch a cartoon before the movie. Just start the movie!
Boring | 3:40 p.m. Jan. 4, 2008
I found the short boring and quite annoying after 15 minutes of previews. I went to see a movie, not a cartoon. The short dragged as previous commenter's said . I hope every movie I see doesn't have cartoons at the beginning. It is fun on the Pixar movies... but I think that is the limit of the shorts place.
Embarrassed | 3:59 p.m. Jan. 4, 2008
I can't believe you actually yelled "They nailed it!" as an adult in relation to a cartoon. I hope you weren't part of the couple giving high-fives to each other during the movie, but considering you yelling out "they nailed it!" over a dumb cartoon leads me to believe it was you.
I'm over 12 and.... | 5:02 p.m. Jan. 4, 2008
I loved it! Way to go Disney!
You've got to be kidding | 5:54 p.m. Jan. 4, 2008
The Goofy short was 1.5 stars, at best!
Terrible | 6:14 p.m. Jan. 4, 2008
Should I be concerned about you YELLING "They nailed it!" that's just odd--and for one thing disney does not "nail it." Look at how much naughty stuff they put in their movies. Who cares about "gooofy" anyways?!(Look it up...)
total1096 | 9:27 p.m. Jan. 4, 2008
I thought it was great. Reminded me of going to the movies as a kid. A cartoon is a lot better than 25 minutes of MTV style movie trailers.
tracyb | 9:48 p.m. Jan. 4, 2008
i also thought that it was fun! lighten up, people! don't we go to the movies to sit back, relax and enjoy? it was hilarious and everyone in the theater was laughing. it is refreshing to see a good, clean movie with no questionable material and an exciting, fun plot and the goofy toon was an added bonus! if it was too silly for you, i suggest skipping the disney fare altogether.

Mr. Lassater learned his showmanship from Mr. Jobs. What a wonderful thing putting the Disney back in Disney. We should applaud this clean, fun form of family entertainment in this world of decadence. Bravo!

"How to Hook Up Your Home Theater" was the best film of 2007.
JPox | 2:32 p.m. Jan. 6, 2008
I loved the short!
I'm glad they did not advertise the short because most audience goers would probably have showed up late to miss it.
Putting it in front of National Treasure rather than Enchanted is good too. Disney wants to expand to a broad audience rather than films geared towards kids.
Cartoons can be enjoyed by everybody in my opinion.
Keep it up Disney Animation!

i couldn't stop laughing, since i used to sell and install this stuff at best buy. Every bit of it was true to the t. Good going disney
mooftay | 8:06 a.m. March 28, 2008
I vote with the people who loved it. BOTH the Disney cartoon at the beginning, AND the movie. I still chuckle when I think about the packing peanuts! (see, YOU smiled just now too) Frankly, I get a little tired of having to sit through 10-15 min. of commercials for upcoming movies. The cartoon was a refreshing change.
