Deer Valley? | 8:46 a.m. Jan. 3, 2008
What is your source for the claim that skiers constantly rate Deer Valley the #1 resort in America? Every publication worth its salt has places like Whistler/Blackcomb, Snowbird, Alta, Squaw, etc. at the top. Most surveys don't even have Deer Valley in the top 25.

The only publication that ever puts Deer Valley near the top is Ski Magazine, but we all know Ski Magazine is not actually about skiing, but rather the skiing lifestyle. Ski Magazine readers are typically middle aged, upper-middle class, intermediate, SUV driving, stretch pants wearing housewives who care more about lunch and getting their lip waxed at a slopeside spa than they do about the actual skiing.

Next time do more research.....you'll see that people who care about things related to actual skiing (snowfall, lifts, terrain, parks, etc.) will give the nod to places that are best if you're there to actually ski.

Hey! Nothing wrong with bein' middle-aged. I drive an Outback, am an expert skiier, and yes DV's lunches are excellent. Hmmm. Maybe I'll go there today. Remember, it's a ski resort. If you want to know what the #1 ski AREA is it's Silverton.

Actually the best ski AREA is all over the Wasatch....it just takes hiking to access it. There are runs in Davis County that rival ANYTHING at a ski resort. The Tri-Canyon area is even better, but too crowded.

Enjoy your pompous lunch at D.V. Dave. I will keep eating taco bell and revel in the fact that I can smoke you down the mountain on inferior equipment and still stay warm without my "Bogner" jacket.

My vote goes to... | 11:57 a.m. Jan. 3, 2008
If voting has already started, I'd like to say that as a snowboarder who isn't into crazy stunts, just a 30-something female who loves to meander down the mountain at my own speed, Park City's Pay Day is my all time favorite. There's not a single foot on that run that isn't perfect. Thanks!

Pay Day!? | 1:20 p.m. Jan. 3, 2008
I think what you meant to say about Pay Day is "there's not a single foot on that run that isn't occupied by a 14-year-old snowboarder talking on a cell phone." How anyone can stand Park City is beyond me......I quit going there after the first year they offered $99 season passes to any student K-12. That was when it turned into something resembling a line to puchase N'Sync concert tickets. Now I won't go there even if I'm offered a free ticket.

Besides, how can Pay Day be considered a signature run? Nobody sits in the base lodge bragging about how they nailed Pay Day. I doubt Park City has a signature run......if it does, it's probably up in Jupiter somewhere.

I can't wait to try a mountain or two when I pick my son up from BYU this December (last time was Alta/Snowbird 25 years ago...). For now I'm "stuck" skiing Whistler/Blackcomb (rated #1 but not the best snow IMO), Kicking Horse ...... Revelstoke which WAS this crappy little resort last year but had the best Heli and Cat skiing in Canada. They just put in a lift to the top so now we can enjoy 6,000 vertical of ski terrain and with twice the snow Whistler gets (40-60 ft) - I'm told it's the best snow - why am I telling all you Americans this......the lines will just get longer!

I have flown out West once a year for the past 25 years. I have visited Whistler, Jackson Hole, Taos, Squaw, Snowmass, Steamboat, and Lake Louise. The best? Snowbird/Alta because it has the best combination of snow, steeps and convenience from the airport (45 minutes). I get Alta powder alerts by e-mail. 222 inches by January 3 and snowfall totals are running slightly below average? Are you kidding me. When you check out the powder shots on line, you just want to hop on a plane and get there ASAP!!!
