Our family loves SLC. I'm sad to read the negative comments but, I tend to think that people who like to complain and that have negative comments are usually more vocal than everyone else. I like the suggestions of Family, Hope and Beautiful. This is a fun place to live and a great place for families.

I find Utah quite "the place." I grew up outside of Utah, a non-mormon. Moved here to Utah with an open mind. I jumped into the PTA, cub scouts, got to know my neigbors (yes, I invited them to dinner at my house first) and ended up being baptized into the LDS church. After 10 years I only have one regret...I should have moved here earlier. My word - POSSIBILITY.

I'm a catholic. I've lived 12 years in California, 3 in Texas, and 5 in Colorado. I moved here to Salt Lake City 4 years ago looking for a good job, good snow, and a good school (go Utes). I found all three, plus one thing I wasn't expecting - a lot of unwarranted hatred towards the Mormons. I don't believe their teachings but they're a lot nicer people than the Mormon haters I've run into on the bus and up at school.

I also have lived in Utah and it's always like coming home when we visit there; we hope to return some day. On the lighter side, I would recommend "dry" - both in climate and in the social scene (even the snow is dry). I'm also sorry to read about all the negative words that have been suggested. But my more serious nominations would be "giving" or "faithful." That was our experience while living there.

I like Theresa's "HOME", and I've never lived in Utah

I found 'judgemental' to be the best so far. There's a huge divide here, and which side of it you're on pretty much will thereafter determine how you're defined and dealt with. I toyed with selfrighteous, but I suppose that's two words. Someone tried 'plastic'; it too captures some of the artificial reality everyone tries to project here, from edited movies to plastic surgery to antidepressants, one thing about reality, we like it modified.
The mountains are grand, though, aren't they?

SLC's word should be SMOG.

To all those who say to move out of Utah if you dont like it. Well, i did just that a few years ago and have been much happier. I like living around normal people who enjoy life and are not stuck in some weird place mentally and spiritually. You folks give good advice, more people should do it, they would be glad they did.
assumers! | 8:23 p.m. Dec. 31, 2007
to: MoveOn, et al: you assume that if someone complains about Utah, that they hate it here. Count me in as a complainer, but I do it because I LOVE Utah. It pains me to see it not meeting its potential (pollution, trash, ugly buildings, disregard for environment, contention, etc). I complain because I want to see Utah better. If I didn't care, I would simply move on, like ou suggest.

I was born in S.E. Idaho and visited SLC frequently. I attended BYU and then worked in SLC for a time. My current employment brings me to SLC regularly. The words that mean Utah and SLC to me are: family and anchor.
Utah is Great | 11:06 p.m. Dec. 31, 2007
After living in more than ten states over the past 25 years, I call Utah:

Magnificent

or

Inspirational

Wouldn't want to live anywhere else. Always surprised at those who hate everything about Utah yet they live here. If its so bad - there is a big country out there that would be happy to have them.

I agree the word is Home! Living in and out of Utah and born and raised there it is still "home"

Home is where one hangs their hat.
Everything else is an attachment.

That said, I like GRANDEUR. Those who don't care for the state, get outside. Ski, bike, hike, camp, explore. It will change your opinion of the state.

UTAH THE MOST BEAUTIFUL! | 11:23 a.m. Jan. 3, 2008
Utah is one of the most beautiful places in the whole world. Although, I could do without stereotype LDS. A nice place can become dark when surrounded by arrogance.
Stereotype LDS | 12:02 p.m. Jan. 3, 2008
And the funny thing is, the arrogant Mormons have nothing to be arrogant about.

There are some good MORMONS. I am a nice guy. I treat everyone fair. I have some friends who are nonmembers. I am not a stereotype.... I don't care for that stuff. I just like being myself and I am not perfect. Some Members don't like me for this, but that's ok. I'll survive. Utah is a nice place.

I have personally been to many states and none of them are comparable to Utah's Natural Beauty and there are so many recreational opportunities that I can go within a matter of minutes away. I would associate Utah with one word: OPPORTUNITY.
something to learn | 6:30 a.m. Jan. 4, 2008
One can learn a lot from a group of people who in classic Aryan-like fashion spend the bulk of their time setting themselves apart from the rest in the community.
What a person can most learn from this is -
COMPASSION
