If he had put his name on the registry, as he knew he needed to do months before the birth, the child could not have been placed in the Nielson home.

Again, LDSFS placed this child according to the law. You want to rewrite adoption law, be my guest. But the way this adoption was performed is extremely similar to over 90% of adoptions in the US. Paternal grandma and grandpa just usually aren't as selfish.

"Ummm, I knocked up my girlfriend during a one night stand, ummm, I don't know, maybe several months ago, pretty much abandoned her, didn't do anything during the pregnancy, and I know I forfeited my rights and all, but my mom wants me to take the kid anyway."

"Okay, here ya go."

No-one has the right to take away a man's child just because of some stupid piece of irresponsible law. I imagine that most of these comments are written either by people who are not adopted, or people who have adopted others.Natural parents and adoptee rights ignored, as always.
Go look at the Australian model for adoption. It is the only decent one I have ever seen. It puts America to shame as a corrupt, cruel system for all sides of the adoption triad.

I went through LDS Social Services and would NOT recommend them to anyone. It was the biggest mistake I have ever made. I have seen the ads on BYU TV channel and they are very manipulative. It shows that the LDS Church is not pro-family as much as they claim. Babies belong with their natural families and infertile couples do not have a right to babies of unmarried mothers. And the LDS Family Services won't help those who want a reunion. Stay away from LDS Social Services. I wouldn't recommend them to anyone. There were options I was not apprised of and the needs of the couple was what counted not the needs of me or my baby.

Okay, so the biological father didn't meet the deadlines? Maybe there should be some required contact with biological fathers before adoption can proceed. As a dad, I would be completely destroyed if I had fathered a child who was subsequently put up for adoption without giving me the chance to step in and take over. True, I was around for both pregnancies and births, and so I am likely a more responsible person than the father in this case... but, the bond I have with my children is a powerful thing, and if I didn't get to see them every day...

I guess my point is, the laws should probably be fixed to acknowledge the fact that a father should have rights too. As far as the whole "he should have been more responsible" argument... It takes two to tango. so his irresponsibility was likely matched by the birth mother's... yeah, she carried the baby (and kudos to her) but she was just as responsible for the baby's conception...

In this case, yeah, they should probably leave the baby with the adoptive parents, but future "oops" dads should have some say in the matter. Fix those laws.

its disgusting that the lds family services would steal a baby from the father that wanted to be in his babies life they coursed the mother into deceiving Mr. Thurnwald so that he would not be around and she could quietly go to the hospital and give the child up to the lds family for adoption this has ruined his life it has hurt his family and all for the "holier than thou" adoption agency that preys upon mothers getting pregnant out of wedlock to give up their babies! They dont care that the father wanted to be with his son all they care about is bringing more souls into the church and services lds families that cannot procreate. And shame on this family who knew the father wanted his son they are selfish and evil! FYI the attorney is the one who filled out the document PEOPLE gets the facts before you judge the mormon church preys upon unwed pregnant mothers to give up their babies for adoption!
