"What does it tell you about a society where building prisons is a growth industry?"

Perhaps it says that perpetrators are now being prosecuted. Perhaps it says society is now addressing issues that have long been "winked at" and hidden. Perhaps it says that some behaviors may always be with us and need to be identified and dealt with even earlier. Just a few thoughts.

Hey anonymous, No it means that we need to address the underlying causes of mental illness, addictions and the reasons that we continue to lock non violent offenders away with mandatory sentencing, while violent criminals get out early. We need to look at the California Proposition 36, they have found ways to lower the recidivism rates of addicts from over 70% to 23% since 2001. This is a significant savings to their state as these people are returned to soceity as productive members rather than locked away for decades. do some research before you spout your opinion that is misguided. Fortunately there is a pilot program that is being explored, Utah DORA.
