Maybe somebody already said this, but there are too many posts to check it out.
This will save time and heartburn/antacids:
Two actual experts produced a DVD that answers people arguing both sides of these issues, and you can see clips at blacksinthescriptures dot com.
Or, you can go on in partial ignorance and extreme stress, at a wonderful time of the year.
big deal | 10:43 a.m. Dec. 15, 2007
To Veronica from Orem;

She said, OK for you cheap shot prevaricators to lie through your rotten teeth about your beliefs, just to make them sound mainstream. Admit it, you are all just a bunch of whining money grabbers - that's what mormonism is all about and that's why you perpetrate a century and a half of obvious lies.

This sounds to me like the perfect qualifications to be the President of the United States, or should Mitt Romney be held to a different standard than the last two, or any of the other front runners?

Haven't we met before? Don't you sell Razors?

Occam's Razor, in Logic, Physics and Metaphysics: The principle states that "Entities should not be multiplied unnecessarily."

Like this comment blog, for instance.
It could read, "Entries should not be...."

In Doctine and Covenants 78 the Lord expects those who follow Him to "be equal in earthly things so that we can be equal in obtaining heavenly things".

If we really put that one priciple into practice there would be less bigotry, less poverty, less racial profiling, less greed . . .and the list goes on.

Unfortunately there are members of every religous creed who simply can't seperate themselves from the fallacies of the society they were raised in. We are byproducts of our parents, teachers, etc. but we can rise above another's bias and prejudice in order to bless the lives of others not simply tolerate them.

Perhaps my perspective isnt clouded by the summery of this interview, or perhaps my perspective isnt clouded by the fact that I didnt grow up in this barren waste land A.K.A Utah. Since moving here I have notice that all Utahans (Mormon, Antis, and the rest of you) are ill informed either about why you are against the church or why you are a member. This is where I stop, to add to this mockery and misrepresent the church as a member or misrepresent an intellect that may belong to a another denomination because of personal reasons and not some superficial college kid state of mind would be a mockery of myself. With that being said, I leave you with a comment from above:

John from the UK: English Cleric Sidney Smith once said that 'the best way of dealing with a bad argument is to let it go on'
James Rupprecht | 11:10 a.m. Dec. 15, 2007
I suppose this is just a small taste of what the early members of the church had to endure in Missouri, Illinois, and other places. This guy isn't the first and surely won't be the last. Bigotry and religious intolerance is why people came to this continent in the first place. I have no doubt that this man's problems and issues run much deeper than his anti-LDS views.
FaithNoMo | 11:11 a.m. Dec. 15, 2007
Do we really have pull out the endless quotes of what Prophets and leaders of the Church have said to show the racism? You want to knock every door in the world to tell people they are wrong, but once someone says anything about your church you want to cry! Seems kind of funny to me! Can you really have it both ways?
Woody | 11:26 a.m. Dec. 15, 2007
Everyone needs to contact MSNBC (and NBC) to get this man fired, remember what they did to Don Imus!
Carl | 11:29 a.m. Dec. 15, 2007
Mormons would to well to listen to this man. He told the truth.

Lawrence O'Donnell, Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh, Don Imus, Laura I., Ann C., etc.; It is America. Please continue to vomit your hate speech. It is your right.

Re: Henry Drummond (9:38 AM 12/14);

Thank you for expressing your thoughts in this forum.

M. Hardy Crawford | 12:03 p.m. Dec. 15, 2007
Some people will believe anything they see and here or read. So, the three worst religions in the world are Judaism, Islam, and Catholicism. Believe it.
The Problem | 12:06 p.m. Dec. 15, 2007
Here is the problem as I see it for today's LDS Church:

The LDS Church of today emphasizes the Savior and his atonement, and a clean, honest, and family-oriented lifestyle. It is one of the most effective and active service organizations in the world. BUT - the first 100 years or so of the Church undeniably include a wealth of difficult and troubling doctrines/teachings/practices/events.

Most individuals and organizations can separate themselves from (repent for) their past and expect other's to accept that if done in sincerety. But the LDS Church's claim of being the one true Church makes this more problematic. It is difficult to say "here is the restored Church/Gospel of Jesus Christ - but in considering it you really should ignore much of what was done or said by early prophets and leaders."

The LDS Church is really struggling with the reality of its past. Thousands have left the Church because of it, do not join because of it, and loudly citicize it because of it.

I truly wish there was a way the Church could honestly and effectively address the troubling aspects of its past. So far people or only asked to ignore it.
Shame on you M.H. Crawford | 12:19 p.m. Dec. 15, 2007
I think "M.Hardy Crawford" forgot to include in his lis of the world's worst religions - Christianity.
The finger-pointing and insults on this blog remind me of my favorite story where Christ bodily threw all of the "Christian" hypocrites out of the temple.
Anonymous | 12:31 p.m. Dec. 15, 2007
Mormons tend to be just as bigoted as everyone else, they just can't tolerate it against themselves. Look at the hatred they have towards people of different sexual orientations, they even have a history of oppression against African Americans as they distort the book to fit their beliefs. They are no different than any other organized religion, they all practice religious bigotry!!!!!!!
Matt Hansen | 12:31 p.m. Dec. 15, 2007
I was born and raised in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. I am not active right now, but I am quite familiar with the doctrine. And based on the doctrine of the church, O'Donnell made more incorrect statements than correct ones. This is a tremendous tax on trust for those who know that he was incorrect.

I believe it is our God-Given right to express our feelings and beliefs as O'Donnell did. I also believe that we are morally obligated to avoid "smearing". Especially when it is based on ignorance or intentional lies.

It is likely that O'Donnell really didn't do his research, and this will fall to MSNBC's bottom line. I believe most people will recognize O'Donnell's shortcomings which is bad for MSNBC. If I were MSNBC, I would end O'Donnell's contract because I want people to trust my brand.

Oh Well | 12:46 p.m. Dec. 15, 2007
With regard to true theology, a more ignorant people never lived than the present so-called Christian world Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses 8:199

This quote is very true to a point. I mean who is the presidental canidate that the religious right(mormons included) supported in the last election? George W. Bush. While he falls in line perfectly with the moral standards of the Religious right the country as a whole is floundering. Bush could end up being regarded as the worst president in American history. He won election cause he played on religious issues (gay marriage, stem cell research, and being a good christian). In regards to the quote above most memembers of the KKK were christian, people in high positions in the catlolic chruch did alot to cover up the child molestion, and look at whats been said about the southern baptist church and segregation until the 1980s. The only similarity between christians & mormons should be christ! As a mormon stuff like what ODonnell said used to angry me but it happens everywhere no point in getting mad but rather try to help give correct information.

BOB IN TEXAS: Where are you getting your ignorant information: I am a student of the South Bainbridge NY 1826 trial. Joseph Smith was cleared of all charges because of the testimonies of the family members of the Josiah Stowell family and Josiah himself who had hired him! Josiah continued to be a strong advocate of Joseph Smith until he died in May of 1844. Ironically just a month before Joseph was murdered. Get you facts straight you ignoramous, then you can criticize!!
Joeson | 2:21 p.m. Dec. 15, 2007
The real issue is the actual doctrine of the LDS church. There have been many stories and opinions but what is the doctrine of the church. We don't know it and don't teach it. Until now. Darius Gray and Marvin Perkins have put out a DVD that details all of the scriptures on the issues. It is amazing and answers all of the questions without debate by using the scriptures. It's called Blacks in the Scriptures.
Eric Nisonger | 2:27 p.m. Dec. 15, 2007
Are we really in the 21st century? I am appalled that they let people shoot their mouths off with no reprocussions. More than likely, he will get a raise for his bigitry, half truths and outright lies. What he doesn't know about the Church of Jeaus Christ of Latter-day Saints would fill the library of congress! If we are not in the last days, I do not know what we are doing having to listen to this jerk. Send him home, unemployed!
Romney Attributes | 2:36 p.m. Dec. 15, 2007
I believe Romney has a nice combination of the political attributes found in George Bush Sr. and Bill Clinton - moderate, reasonable, intelligent, compassionate, and diplomatic. Maybe a bit too opportunistic but no one's perfect. Unfortunately though, 100 million evangelical voters will just be too much to overcome. I think that, after Romney, the candidate with those same type of attributes is probably Obama.
He Will Fade Away... | 3:33 p.m. Dec. 15, 2007
O'Donnell sounds so passionate against a religion that would still welcome him to one of their sacrament meetings. I wonder if he has the guts to call Mohammed a criminal and a rapist? Hey Larry, let's see how passinate you are. Go ahead. You spout off in 'righteous indignation' when there is no harm or threat to you. This is not original behavior. It's called mob-mentality. And for those who keep saying that he has a valid point, just wait, your religion will be next. What you believe or think about religion has no bearing on this. Everyone should be disgusted and alarmed by this guy.
CharityAngel | 3:36 p.m. Dec. 15, 2007
So, you can list this guy as a supporter of the "Patriot" Act, since he too would love to crush our first amendment rights. I have no problem with someone speaking out, but when it is outright untrue, then they call that something else altogether. Attitudes like that create more division and more hate in our nation, which only weakens us as Americans. When it comes to a president, we should be looking for whoever will preserve the Constitution, and undo those unconstitutional actions that have taken place in the past. I hope that Americans will back the Constitution and not attack someone's religion, it is their right to worship.

Saddened | 3:39 p.m. Dec. 15, 2007
I am saddened not only by his comments, but of the need for some to lower themselves to his standards.
Sure, I have a strong testimony of the theology of my church, but I sure don't go knocking down others for theirs.
Let's not lower ourselves to the man's level. And remember, just because it's on the internet,in a movie, or some history book doesn't make it true. Only the Spirit can lead you to where you are supposed to be.
If nothing else, simply agree to disagree.
both crazy | 3:47 p.m. Dec. 15, 2007
Glad the right wing Christian representative fessed up to Christian tolerance of slavery. It just proves why neither religion should be part of the White House.
book censorship | 4:00 p.m. Dec. 15, 2007
I've heard a lot about the best-seller, "The God Makers" but can't find it anywhere in Utah. There is a rumor that it has been banned in Utah. Can they do that?
A Detroiter | 4:28 p.m. Dec. 15, 2007
occam: You said "The fact is, the LDS Church favored white people over black people until the mid-seventies."

Please keep in mind as well, that so did much of the nation.
Otherwise, we'd not have hero's such as Martin Luther King Jr and Rosa Parks.
Perspective | 6:35 p.m. Dec. 15, 2007
President Hinckley recently shared this story in General Conference, which may help in putting into perspective the comments of Mr. O'Donnell.

"Once a man who had been slandered by a newspaper came to Edward Everett asking what to do about it. Said Everett, Do nothing! Half the people who bought the paper never saw the article. Half of those who saw it, did not read it. Half of those who read it, did not understand it. Half of those who understood it, did not believe it. Half of those who believed it are of no account anyway (Sunny Side of the Street, Nov. 1989).

So many of us make a great fuss of matters of small consequence. We are so easily offended. Happy is the man who can brush aside the offending remarks of another and go on his way."

I love the perspective of Prophets and Seers.
OurActions | 6:37 p.m. Dec. 15, 2007
Intolerance.....hate-speech.

This time it may be toward the LDS Church, ....another time...Jewish...or Catholic...or?

A rose by any other name...................this my friends is not sweet but ugly and harmful.

Intolerance and hate-speech are what they are.
The question remains...do we as thinking citizens sit by and allow this to take place?

Or do we recognize and understand that this is about the freedom of all of us?...all religions and groups to be free of hate-speech and hate crimes toward us.

Do we allow any presidential candidate to be the target of hate-speech toward his religion or beliefs?

Do we take actions to insure our freedoms?

Do we make our voices heard by those doing such things and stand up for the rights we all have...to be free of hate-speech? I don't care what denomination you are...this is your battle....
OurActions | 7:18 p.m. Dec. 15, 2007
Perspective...thank you for your comments.

This however is not about the slander of one man...it is about a direct and hateful attack on members of the LDS Church.

It is about a public display of hate-speech, and a public display of attack on one of our presidential candidates for his beliefs.

Sitting by and taking the passive road will not be a title of liberty unto us or anyone else. There most defiantly is a time to "Stand for Something".

The Ostrich approach most likely will NOT maintain your personal freedoms.
Re: Why Worry | 7:42 p.m. Dec. 15, 2007
Why Worry (at 4:00)did you really just compare this commentator's speech about Mormons to the persecution of the Jews in the Holocaust? Give me a break

don imus says three words, and was banned from tv for months....the repentance process for him was painful and personal.....and so were this guys, these folks who speak out of hate and ignorance are filled with a spirit that is evident in there persona and there physical apperance, what we can do is continue live our faith and have the love of the savior, love those who revile against us..eternal perspective should always rule our thoughts.....
Lake | 8:38 p.m. Dec. 15, 2007
O'Donnell is a complete bigot. He deserves to be fired. And in the meantime, his own bigoted words -- memorialized on the Internet for years to come -- will follow him like a plague.
don | 8:55 p.m. Dec. 15, 2007
O'Donnell is correct, pure and simple. Wake up and read the history of Joseph Smith and the visions he was dreaming of having. He was a fake and a phony.
Also he was a free mason got got much of his fake writings from there. Dont believe me just read the history for yourself
RE: don | 10:13 p.m. Dec. 15, 2007
ha ha don you apparently have fallen upon some secret writings that no one before you has ever read. everyone knows Joseph Smith was a free mason and everyone knows that non-LDS people say he stole teachings from them. If the free masons have truth LDS people seek it and the same goes for every other teaching on earth. if its true its a part of LDS belief. youve shared nothing new with anyone today with your comments. and apparently youre a Joseph Smith scholar as well... i'd be surprised to learn if you've spent more than a few months of hard study about the person you claim to know.
Self Slander | 11:00 p.m. Dec. 15, 2007
The only thing O'Donnell has done is slander himself. He is a bigot, plain and simple, and he has left this as his personal legacy. Let the world examine and judge his remarks for themselves. May the LDS crowd follow the example of the Savior and turn the other cheek, and pray for those that despitefully use you, and love your enemies, and may the Lord forgive him for he knows not what he does.
RE: don 2 | 11:07 p.m. Dec. 15, 2007
Exactly.

Don, my man, go get ROUGH STONE ROLLING by Bushman, an active Mormon. You'll get all the facts there, plus more you don't know about. You can be shocked, appalled, horrified. And then realize that there's nothing you can say that Mormons haven't heard already. Being shocked and horrified isn't anything new, however, Jesus seemed to have the same effect on the established religion of his day as well.

Tolerance people... | 11:08 p.m. Dec. 15, 2007
I am LDS.

I truly wish that those not of my faith would have tolerance but expect that I will be disappointed by some.

(I thank those good people that might disagree with the doctrines of my faith but are tolerant and even kind. Many have made substantially valid and mature comments in this messy list of blogs).

I truly wish people of my faith would have tolerance but expect that I will be disappointed by some.

(I believe many who profess to be of my faith damage not only their own credibility but that of their religion by making such immature and personal comments...TOLERANCE people or you are no better than those that attack!!! Besides, their attacks only hurt those weak in their faith. Be strong.

VERONICA, you have every right to remain living in Orem and I hope you find tolerance not anger in your own heart. My little brother hates me and disowned me as his brother due to my being a member of "the cult". My heart aches. He is intollerant, venemous, angry, judgemental and unforgiving. None of which are Christlike attributes. I love him, miss him and hope that one day to reunite as brothers.

To: The Problem | 11:26 p.m. Dec. 15, 2007
Religion must be followed through FAITH! It seems those few who would discredit the church, or not understand why it's history has played out as it has has little faith. The church was started by men who had weaknesses as we all do. They were also led by faith and had to interpret the scriptures and revelations as they saw them. Luckily, Joseph Smith, who was not perfect, was one of those rare individuals who had exceptional faith and who had a specific role to play. I believe he is no different than the early prophets of the scriptures.

In regards to the history of the church, who are we to judge? I have no doubt it will all be sorted out in the end and will make sense. Blind faith you say? Perhaps, but I choose to follow what I know is right, not because someone else told me, but rather that I have found out through faith and prayer on my own. My testimony is strong and can't be shaken by a few perceived inconsistencies that none of us fully comprehend or understand.

"Be still, and know that I am God..."~Psalm 46:10
Who is this guy? | 12:13 a.m. Dec. 16, 2007
I've never even heard of him and thankfully I know I will never hear of him again. He is a bigot. Don't like him, don't want to. Met people like him before and don't like them either. Free to their opinions, but when you open the airwaves there are elements of accountability as you represent a program/station. He should be held accountable or at least have a discussion with the opposite side (one he will never do, because ranting like he did is only possible without opposition.)
Re: OurActions | 12:13 a.m. Dec. 16, 2007
I fully agree that hate-speeches are not something we should sit by and idley allow to steam-roll our own beliefs and standards. It is EVERY person's inherent right to defend and protect their body, their family, their religion, their mind, their freedom, their health, their home, their friends, their very lives! But what is a person to do in a situatio such as this? What to do, indeed.

To All Commentors:
Lashing out in anger and bitterness for what has caused offense to be taken, is not the better path. Calmly and boldly taking action CAN co-exist. You won't find positive-offense when words & actions are full of negative defenses... there is almost always hurt found by one or more persons. THINK BEFORE YOU SPEAK! You may find your very words attacking YOU at some point. Your words are the actions you set in example for YOUR loved ones! Do you want them to read what you've said to one another? Do you want to repeat the prideful hate? No doubt, appologies from Mr. O'Donnell should be made! Perhaps from the network as well. Having that much against a particular person, or Faith... what happened to cause such executionary behavior?!?
History out in the open | 2:34 a.m. Dec. 16, 2007
1)Educators and history textbooks for the past century and a half have predominately omitted an objective discussion about the American-born church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
2)Just think if for over the past 50 years even, if children had learned about "Mormon History in America" as thouroughly as they learned about "The Trail of Tears" or "The Underground Railroad" or "The Boston Tea Party" that those children would now be adults and would be more open to accepting Mormons as part of the "Melting Pot" that makes up this nation.
3) State history is taught in elementary school and there are many states that should include historical information of the arrival, settlement, contributions, conflicts, and departure of Mormons. This would not have to be in conflict with "separation of church and state" as it is a matter of HISTORY. (PS. I grew up in California and never learned of the contributions of the Mormon Battalion until I was an adult.)Question:How do Utah schools teach state history? (straight forward or PC?)
4) History-it helps us not repeat mistakes. History-it helps us understand people and their cultures, which should help promote tolerance.
5)It's time for "Mormon History" to be taught.
L. G. Kirkpatrick | 6:21 a.m. Dec. 16, 2007
1. To "Mike, 8:08 A.M., Dec. 14,2007" and "Bill, Tooele, 8:35 A.M., Dec. 14, 2007": You asked that we forgive Mr. O'Donnell. I cannot forgive him; forgiveness is only due if the offender apologizes for his miscreant and abberant behavior, makes a sincere effort at repentance and rehabilitation, refrains from repeating those actions, and asks for forgiveness. Maybe some day I'll see the error of my ways and change my mind, but don't hold your breath.
2. To "Chad 8:40 A.M., Dec. 14, 2007": You state that Mr. O'Donnell's actions were "entertaining". I must admit my deficiency in NOT finding such behavior to be entertaining. Would you find it entertaining if Mr. O'Donnell made similar remarks in reference to your faith (or to any other faith)? Would you find it entertaining if like-minded remarks were made to an ethnic minority? I would hope not.
And these remarks and the spirit in which they were made are also not "sick" -- my wife was sick (she's dead now) and suffered from depression and other mental problems -- and she never did or would have made remarks like Mr. O'Donnell's. His remarks were not sick, they were slanderous and inflamatory."
Mr. Law | 8:02 a.m. Dec. 16, 2007
This is the first fair article covering leftist journalists' anti-Mormon bigotry I have seen from the Deseret News, ever!

I may have missed some, because I'm not a regular reader, but it's nice to see something praiseworthy for once.

Bravo!
KHR | 8:35 a.m. Dec. 16, 2007
O'Donnell could care less about Blacks, Mormonism, or Bigotry. Its all about ratings. His "Big Love" show is a Big flop and this is a cheap attempt to generate interest in its subject matter.

Here are a few recent comments from Robert Bianco USA Today concerning the series.
From what I can tell, the goal of Love is to prove that life can be just as mundane, colorless and boring with three spouses as it can with one or none. Mission accomplishedThe cast is undoubtedly talentedBut nothing they do breathes life into these characters or their problemsI'm guessing it won't take more than 15 minutes for people to remember that Grey's Anatomy is playing over on ABC, and to move on over themselves.
My advice? Save the quarter-hour and skip straight to Grey's Anatomy. No matter how many spouses you have, life's too short to waste it on Love.

Are you willing? | 8:56 a.m. Dec. 16, 2007
For all those who would shoot down the doctrine of the LDS church similar to Mr Odonnell, I ask you this...

Are you willing to shoot down Islam in the same fashion?
How about Hinduism, or Bhuddism?
What about Catholisism, 7-day Adventists, or Jehovah Witnesses?

Why are you not willing to go on those message boards and attack those religions? I believe that you're scared. Scared of the fight that you would truly be in for (physical & spirutual) should you open your mouth or keyboard against those people.

LDS people are not perfect and can be ignorant about other people's views at a times. However, that does not justify the mean-spirit comments on this board ,or the public forum.

Is Grambling racist because it caters to african-american students? How about the NAACP? How about Augusta National? There are plenty of fingers that could be pointed elsewhere as well.

Just my humble thoughts...As someone once said, "remember the reason for the season."
Tim | 9:24 a.m. Dec. 16, 2007
To the "pro" mormon faction here. As a non-mormon and if I were considering joining your faith, and I then read your hateful comments; I would conclude that Mormons are truly hypocrites. I would tell your missionaries to get honest employment.

Bye for now! Wow....such hate!
News? or Views? | 9:31 a.m. Dec. 16, 2007
I do not want to fire this commentator. He certainly was ill informed and spewed hatred and lies regarding a religion he obviously knows little about. I think he should go to a religious and cultural sensitivy class taught by two Mormon elders. He then should perform lots of research into the Mormon faith due to his desire to address his concerns regarding a presidential candidate who happens to affiliate himself with the Mormon Faith.
Once he has obtained that information he should cross reference the Church of Jesus Christs of Latter Day Saints beliefs, doctrine, scriptures against the New and Old Testament. He then may be informed enough to address the topic of his concern.
If that seems like too much effort to grasp what it is we believe and its foundation, then perhaps he should leave his obvious bias and hatred off the newscast. Whatever happened to reporting the news instead of making it?
