GreyCougar | 1:39 a.m. Dec. 4, 2007
Thanks Dick for setting it straight. Until we can be consistent in winning the bowl games and defeating BCS conference teams on a regular basis, we have no room to complain. Respect must be earned, not merely rewarded. Kudos to Bronco and the entire staff, players and fans. C'mon Cougs let's take this Cougar Nation to the next level.
SJ Bobkins | 2:29 a.m. Dec. 4, 2007
The solution to putting on a crappy game, is entirely in Las Vegas's hands. PAY ENOUGH so the 3rd place team, will wish to come to Las Vegas. In 2005, California didn't want to play in the Las Vegas Bowl, but with some bad losses they had no choice. In 2006, Oregon didn't want to play in the Las Vegas Bowl, however with a end of year dive, they had no choice. The Las Vegas Bowl doesn't pay each team a million dollars, as yet, and stands in the bottom 20% in what it does pay, ($750,000 to $900,000). Pay Holiday money see what happens!
In all of Las Vegas, isn't it possible that there is so little interest in this game that they cannot build a nice, larger stadium of UNLV football, and all the other events that could be held? Sam Boyd is a small stadium build long ago, with reconstructions after remodeling until it's a mess, of slapped together changes. In one of the WAC championship games, they had old 1984 LA Olympic seats temporarily in the north end.
Pay more than you can negotiate for the 3rd place or even a better at large.
Max | 4:43 a.m. Dec. 4, 2007
I don't think the complaining was because UCLA is not a good opponent. Obviously they are better than BYU because they already beat BYU this season. The problem is that they have already played and will play again next season. I am sure UCLA fans aren't any more more excited about this game than BYU fans. Everybody knows that UCLA is a great school and great opponent. It is just not as interesting to see the same teams play so much.

"Iron-weld connected"
"Bolt-and-nail salad"
Is this woman the executive director of the Las Vegas Bowl or the president of Ironworkers Local 433?
As for the clever writing, Dick, it's not working.
Bob | 5:39 a.m. Dec. 4, 2007
She's "bright"? Well, at least she's got a leg up on Craig Thompson!
Marky | 6:03 a.m. Dec. 4, 2007
Sad but true. BYU has to play the games it has on the schedule, not the ones it dreams of. Should BYU beat UCLA in Las Vegas (not an easy task, by the way), they may have a chance to make some noise in the BCS next year. However, should BYU lose to UCLA, all of the limited respect that they have garnered thus far will evaporate overnight.
Anonymous | 6:16 a.m. Dec. 4, 2007
Your on target Dick. If I recall BYU was beat by UCLA earlier this season so to say UCLA is an unworthy opponent does not make sense. Beat UCLA on the 22nd and again next fall and than the cougars will have proven that they are ready to move to the next level. GO BYU!
Rudy in LV | 6:33 a.m. Dec. 4, 2007
I love BYU, but am I the only one that sees BYU letting down to what they feel is an inferior opponent that could very well be healthy again. To the level when they beat BYU earlier, as well as, a new coach that nobody has prepared for???
Cougar Passion | 6:44 a.m. Dec. 4, 2007
Agreed. Although all of us would prefer an opponent we haven't already played this season, hopefully Bronco has them viewing it as a shot at redemption. BYU needs to put together a fantastic game and make UCLA wish they had chosen a different bowl. Otherwise we're going to look pretty foolish for complaining about meeting the Bruins again.
Mississippi Coug | 6:48 a.m. Dec. 4, 2007
I agree, we cannot complain about UCLA or the Las Vegas bowl, but we can and should do something to fix the MWC. A conference that would concede that our best is only as good as the 5th place team in another conference is horrible and the TV deal, or lack thereof, is killing us (the whole conference)on the national stage. BYU does need to improve its post-season record, but win or lose in the Las Vegas bowl, we stand very little to gain and a whole lot to lose.
Jamie | 7:03 a.m. Dec. 4, 2007
It sounds just like a Cougar fan to complain about their opponent in a bowl game. There is no pleasing BYU fans.
BYU | 7:13 a.m. Dec. 4, 2007
Needs to win some bowl game before griping about opponents. If BYU had beaten UCLA earlier this year, I would be even more upset if I was a BYU fan but BYU does have something to prove in this game.

I also think Kunzer-Murphy (what an awful name - and person from what I've heard) also needs to change her perspective of their "model" for this game. PAC-10 #4 or #5 isn't a team the MWC champ should be playing. A better model would be the MWC champ vs. the WAC champ. In most years, that will be two top #25 teams and generate a better game and event. The PAC-10 #4 or #5 in most years won't be that good and in many years, it will be a pathetic .500 team like this year's UCLA team.
Oregon Cougar | 7:15 a.m. Dec. 4, 2007
Why do we fans start complaining now? We knew the score before the season began. We go undefeated, we may get a BCS bowl. We don't win out and the best we could hope for is the Vegas Bowl. The worst thing to happen to BYU is UCLA fired Dorrell. DeWayne Walker (remember him?) will have those pesky little Bruins ready to play. If my memory is correct, we are 0-1 against them this year. We should be grateful the Vegas Bowl took us. At least we didn't end up playing Navy.
Roger | 7:16 a.m. Dec. 4, 2007
Well put. If the key to glory in the regular season is to get wins against weak oponents, you'd think the key to long-term glory is bowl wins against weak oponents. BYU should be thrilled for the opportunity to avenge its loss against UCLA.

It seems that BYU wants to play a better team so they won't be so embarassed when they lose.
Illinois Coug | 7:22 a.m. Dec. 4, 2007
Pack the stands and beat the Bruins. Wish I could be there.
As many have said before, this is a game we cannot lose. It would be devastating to everything done by the Cougars so far this year.

I'm just glad I get to watch the Cougs play one more time this year!!
Better bowl? | 7:22 a.m. Dec. 4, 2007
I just moved here from out of state. I don't understand why the BYU fans think they deserve a 'better' opponent. You LOST to UCLA!

There are good reasons why the MWC doesn't have better bowl tie-ins. To get the respect fans think you deserve, BYU should try all they can to get a better out of conference schedule, even if it means going on the road for all of the games.

By the way, Oklahoma beat Tulsa by 42 points.
ajarizona | 7:25 a.m. Dec. 4, 2007
So, because BYU's bowl record is dismal, as a Conference Champions, they are not worthy of playing anything better than a 6&6 UCLA team?
Stupid logic Dick. Kansas?

It's not a matter of dissing UCLA. It's finding the MWC teams right where they were thirty years ago.
Build up a bowl, then have said bowl, dump you like a led baloon. Remember the Fiesta and Holiday bowls?

Until the Mountain West Conference creates, owns, and controls it's own bowl, it will never change.

The league should start it's "OWN" bowl, set up an endowment and pay the Visitors 2 to 3 million per year, and then they would get the number 2 or 1 of some conferences.

If you have not noticed, the game today is all about money. The BCS was "contrived" to control the bowls and the money. It's against anti-trust laws and should be challenged.

But, until then, BYU and Utah should stop pussyfooting around and play hardball, get creative and put up the money to draw a higher profile team. Raise the money and get it done.

Do you really think the Vegas bowl could not get the 3rd PAC-10 over El Paso?
Utefan | 7:29 a.m. Dec. 4, 2007
Let's see......Cougar fans are whining about their opponent in the Las Vegas bowl because it's only has six wins??? Annnnd one of those six wins was BYU? Puhleeeze BYU....play 'em and beat 'em before whining about 'em.
UteFan | 7:41 a.m. Dec. 4, 2007
Supposedly this is an article about why BYU and its fans shouldn't complain about the quality of its bowl opponent, but then Dick has to go and disparage the quality of Utah's opponent in its bowl game - huh? How is the "Sagarin Rating" of Utah's opponent relevant at all to the point of what you're writing Harmon? It's as if you can't make a point about BYU without a dig at the U. Typical. The LV Bowl matchup, while contractually unavoidable, is an insult to BYU, Utah and the entire MWC. A BYU-Utah rematch would get more interest and be a better game - of course then Dick would have to point out that Utah's Sagarin rating is lower than the Y I suppose.
Forrest | 7:43 a.m. Dec. 4, 2007
The Cougs have already lost to UCLA. They will have their hands full. That's all I have to say about that.
Nice perspective | 7:46 a.m. Dec. 4, 2007
Thanks Dick for getting this information out there. I was one of the disappointed fans when UCLA was announced as the LV Bowl opponent. I know the system is broken, but I was really disappointed only because this is a rematch of a 2007 opponent and a preview of a 2008 opponent. I wouldn't have said a word if the LV Bowl had been able to invite Cal (who is also 6-6) because at least that wouldn't be a rematch.

The LV Bowl is doing a good job given the current system/contracts and limitations. I was very surprised to get an email back from Tina Kunzer-Murphy when I voiced my disappointment about the rematch. She sent a brief email saying they had no choice other than to take UCLA. And as Dick points out, it was UCLA who wouldn't back down. Although I still think a rematch is not in UCLA's best interest either.

I'm sure Bronco will rally the team and they should avenge the loss from earlier this year. I can't wait to see BYU destroy another Pac-10 team in a bowl game again. Go Cougars!
can we finally shut up & win? | 7:46 a.m. Dec. 4, 2007
Here's one article of Harmon's that I agree with every word. As a long time fan, BYU has had a horrific bowl record and we have ALWAYS complained about our opponent. And lost. To put it in perspective, we would have to win for the next 9 years (until 2015) just to have a winning bowl record. Let's start beating some good teams in the season and 6-5 bowl opponents in the post season, then we can complain - in about 15 more years!!!
Texas Fan | 7:59 a.m. Dec. 4, 2007
What can be proven by beating the 5th rated team in the PAC-10? How is this moving the Cougars up to the next level? Yes, there is a contract in place that requires it--it is a poor contract. The Las Vegas Bowl needs to make changes so it is not tied to the 5th ranked team in the Pac-10. Again, the bowl system stinks. Most people (the fans) prefer a college football playoff system not the money/power system currently in place.
Ralph | 8:05 a.m. Dec. 4, 2007
Has anyone figured out yet that playing in a bowl game is no big whoop anymore? Say nothing of who you play? There are 32 bowl games. 64 teams go bowling. There are 119 division one football programs. That means that anyone that can pull on a pair of shoulder pads has a 54% chance of getting to a bowl game. You don't even need to have a winning record to get to one. Neither BYU or UCLA, Utah or Navy have a chance of playing anyone substantive. Let's face it, with the exception of a handful of bowls, they mean absolutely nothing. It's about the money and the recreation. Let's just go to Vegas and San Diego and have fun supporting our teams !! Go Cougs! Go Yewts!!
Jack from Ark | 8:06 a.m. Dec. 4, 2007
BYU will never get the chance with out going undefeated hopefully with the Topsy turvy season someone will recognize that a playoff is really the only answer if you really want more than a popularity contest. Follow the money, the fifth place UCLA will share with the PAC ten more than half the bowl dollars the whole MWC will receive. How will you ever get parity if there is such a huge dis-parity in dollars. The only reason BYU can compete is because of the great success of the booster organization and the Church. We are a strong conference and deserve more. We have shown as a conference we can stand up to many opponents. Do we win them all, no but neither has the rest of the conference leaders this year. If it's just about the money we don't have a chance. If it really is about the best team then lets prove it on the field. Other than that GO BYU GO BLUE
Crowton haters | 8:07 a.m. Dec. 4, 2007
Hey just wanted to point to all you people that wanted Crowton run out of town that his current team will be playing for the national championship while his former team will be playing in the Las Vegas toilet bowl. Kind of like how Norm Chow had an enormously successful career at USC after BYU ran him out.
lucyb | 8:10 a.m. Dec. 4, 2007
Great article, and it was spot on. Bronco will have the team handle the situation with class, which is the example we fans should follow. Go Cougs.
Nevada | 8:11 a.m. Dec. 4, 2007
Mr Harmon has identified the problem. "Mr Holmoe has no tollerance for..." & no idea how to rectify the problem. Better athletes, better conference, and better leadership throughout the conference. But since no one can see the Zoo play and no one but Zoobies will watch or attend the so called Bowl game it only worsens.
Sagarin | 8:12 a.m. Dec. 4, 2007
Why mention the Sagarin rankings? I'm a fan of the computers, but they don't tell the whole story here. UCLA's computer strength came from its early wins before it lost all of its good players to injury. The team BYU is getting is just a shell of the team ranked #37 by Sagarin.
BlueCougar | 8:13 a.m. Dec. 4, 2007
Dick, Could you please stop praising "head cheerleader" Tina and talk about football.
Blood Runs Blue | 8:16 a.m. Dec. 4, 2007
I agree with GreyCougar. Thanks Dick for the informative article. BYU still has lots to prove and this bowl is an opportunity regardless of UCLA's current record. It is still UCLA! I believe the players understand the importance of taking care of business in Las Vegas better than some of our fans. We purchased our bowl tickets months ago. We are not opting out of this chance to see our team perform. Thank you players and coaches for a job well done so far this year. Go Cougs!
Anyone with long memories? | 8:31 a.m. Dec. 4, 2007
The only thing consistent about BYU's football program is their poor play in bowl games (only 2 convincing wins in 25 tries) AND the whining of fans about their opponents. Remember 1979 and Indiana?? Before last year, we hadn't won a bowl in over 10 years!!!
IdahoCougar | 8:32 a.m. Dec. 4, 2007
Amen! To both Dick Harmon and Grey Cougar above. Lets not forget BYU Fans this is a team we dominated statistically in September and still lost the game. Before we start ripping the bowl president(My apologies to you Tina, if you read this.) lets think about the fact that the lact of respect we get and the MWC gets is due to the conference president and our horrible exposure problem. When we can showcase the kind of football BYU is playing right now and do it consistently, then we have the right to start whining about who we draw in a bowl game. I hope the team and coaches are taking UCLA as seriously as I am. Go Cougs!!!!!!!!!
Tina found out | 8:40 a.m. Dec. 4, 2007
Tina just found out what MWC fans have known for years: BYU fans are incredibly petty and immature and somehow believe the college football world revolves around Provo.
So she gets a flood of calls and emails from BYU fans complaining that somehow UCLA is beneith them. Last September UCLA wasn't beneith BYU, they were much better.
Grow up BYU fans! As GreyCougar put it, you have to earn your respect, it's not simply given to you.
Mark-Blue (cougar)Fan | 8:55 a.m. Dec. 4, 2007
An oportunity for both teams to do well! Go Blue. A great job by Las Vegas Bowl staff who should not let some BYU fan's comments detract from this fabulous moment.
Vegas Ed | 9:00 a.m. Dec. 4, 2007
If BYU gets cocky they'll lose. Who can forget when everyone was so mad BYU was forced to play a horrible Texas A & M team, who proceeded to literally kill Ty Detmer and the whole team. I think it was 65-14 and Ty Detmer's career when they dislocated both his shoulders on cheap shots. I still am thrilled with every Texas A & M loss.
Oklahoma Cougar | 9:02 a.m. Dec. 4, 2007
My oh my....how far we think we have come that we are actually belittling the Las Vegas Bowl officials because the Cougars are playing UCLA....a UCLA team that whooped us pretty good this season if I remember, and that can probably do it again if the Cougars go in with poor attitudes

This is UCLA, after all...a program with a great history...not Steven Henegar Beauty College

Stop the complaining and start preparing for a great game.
Answer is | 9:03 a.m. Dec. 4, 2007
BYU needs to just beat the pants off UCLA. I mean run up the score.
I were a BYU coach, I would motivate this game as a lack of respect from the big boys of the BCS.
derek r | 9:17 a.m. Dec. 4, 2007
I am excited to see BYU play UCLA and a PAC 10 school. Wouldn't it be nice to see teams like UCLA on the BYU schedule every week. Let's make Las Vegas and UCLA sober!
GO COUGARS!!!!
Re:Crowton haters | 9:24 a.m. Dec. 4, 2007
I never hated Crowton. I think he is a good guy and an amazing offensive minded coordinator. Now, as a head coach, he couldn't get it done and deserved to be run out of Cougartown. He never understood how to run this unique program at the Y. He acted arrogant towards opposing coaches, BYU fans and you can't do that. He didn't respect or embrace the past like Bronco has but that's why he had to jump ship. LSU is playing for the National title because of their amazing defense. While the offense is talented and fun to watch, it's the Tigers defense that has carried them this far. But, I'm happy for Gary and his family but in no way shape or form would I want him in replace of "The Man" Bronco Mendenhall. Bronco is the most dedicated, sincere humble coach I know of and he is a fantastic head coach and leader. GO COUGS!!!
BYU is ripe to be upset | 9:27 a.m. Dec. 4, 2007
Good to see so many Cougar fans realizing that we will get beaten if we don't play well in this game.

Hopefully Bronco will be able to convince the team they can be beaten, instead of believing this bowl game will be a walk in the park.
Re; Vegas Ed | 9:31 a.m. Dec. 4, 2007
Ty Detmer was not injured on cheap shots in the 1990 Holiday Bowl. He was injured because of being hit on legal plays. Claiming they were cheap shots is ridiculous.

Besides, once one shoulder is dislocated, why would anyone continue playing that qb and then complain when the second shoulder gets dislocated? Blame the BYU coaches for two dislocated shoulders, not the aTm players.
Honestly | 9:32 a.m. Dec. 4, 2007
Just play the hand you're dealt. What an opportunity to exact a little revenge for a loss we were so convinced that should have been a win. Another chance for Max to overshadow B. O. So what if we play them again next year. We also play Utah, San Dengo State, Wyoming, etc. next year. So what. When you strap on the helmet, it doesn't really matter who is on the other side of the line. That's my Bronco keeps saying it is about the game and our performance, not the other team. If UCLA fans don't buy into the game, that jsut means more tickets for us. I believe he will have them ready to play, and if not, they will pay the price in Spring ball. I believe the Edwards era looked upon bowl games as kind of a reward for a good season. That's one "tradition" I hope has been dumped.
David | 9:35 a.m. Dec. 4, 2007
I also think the tv deal is terrible. But I am not sure about the complaints that it has hurt our reputation nationally. I am actually quite pleased with the national respect BYU is getting this season. We are ranked 17th in the BCS after beginning unranked and losing 2 games we shouldn't have. And I guarantee you if we beat UCLA we will start off in the top 20 next season. I'd say we are currently getting as much national respect as we deserve.
chester blue | 9:36 a.m. Dec. 4, 2007
Harmon's analysis of certain BYU fans was right on. We can't think we're great until we consistently beat BCS schools or at least win 60% of those games. I don't mind playing UCLA because they are a talented team even though our record states we're the superior team. The Bruins will come ready to play and I'll be there cheering on the COOGS. A revenge matchup sounds fine to me because now we can prove that the poor officiating and dumb penalties we earned lost us the game. Let's just enjoy another great season and a chance to be in a bowl game period and prove we're the better team.
Alwayzwrite | 9:53 a.m. Dec. 4, 2007
Sad but true. It's a sad day when BYU's big date for a post season bowl game fires their coach for being a loser. Cougar fans from Idaho and Utah (just count the pickup trucks) will fill the mini-stadium at the worst known venue in post season college football, and the "Y" will still get beat. Winning the MWC crown is little more than winning the intramural football crown at any other "major" football school.
Please correct | 10:19 a.m. Dec. 4, 2007
Navy's Sagarin rating is 74, not 94.
Respect? | 10:19 a.m. Dec. 4, 2007
Honestly, where do the rest of you BYU fans think BYU should be ranked this year? At 10-2, with the strength of schedule we had this year, I think #17 in the BCS is pretty generous. BYU, in my opinion, isn't a top 15 team this year.

We have no signature wins and we lost to Tulsa and UCLA, neither of which is a top 25 team.

If we are honest, aren't we getting about the respect we deserve nationally?
RE: Re Vegas Ed | 10:21 a.m. Dec. 4, 2007
Even the commentators were saying what cheap shots they were and that their D was intentionally doing what they did. It may have been legal be/c no flags were thrown but that doesn't mean it wasn't cheap.
