Official says United, Delta have discussed merging; airlines deny it

How many jobs will SLC lose, if this merger takes place? United won't want hubs in both Denver and SLC, and Denver's airport is more modern than SLC's "we never got around to updating" airport.

The one GOOD thing that could come out of this, by losing "hub" status, is that SLC could have a better mix of airlines, better competition, and more competitive fares.

Good Bye to the hub in SLC if this happens. Back again to the days of going to Denver for any travel east. Maybe good for the industry, but not so good for travel from SLC. (BTW... I noted in your story that the religion of all those involved wasn't listed.... Seems the DN is slipping)

If a merger were to happen between Delta and United, that would be bad news for SLC as United has a hub in Denver.

According to CNN (within the last five minutes), United and/or Delta has DENIED that such talks are taking place.

SLC airport can not handle the big arrival banks and departure banks. I have never though it was a good huge hub like what delta has done to it. If SLC loses it's hub status, that might slow the demand for companies moving to Salt Lake also. I wish airlines would move to more and smaller hubs. Of coarse I am sure there are reasons that I don't know. Currently there are too many airlines, any small downturn and they will all be hurting. Congress will turn around and bail them out. This is not how it should be.

Slow down people, this may not be bad for SLC at all. DEN can not handle much more departures than it has, so SLC may see the perfect fit. You cant take two hubs and make one with either location. I wouldnt sweat it, besides SLC has never been on the chopping block for Delta with any previous deals..

Mergers of giant companies in giant industries is almost always bad for consumers because it takes away competition. Competition makes companies think about how to win customers. Mergers lead to higher prices, poor service, and out of control spending.

- Mergers of oil companies are directly responsible for the high price of oil (which won't go away until we switch fuels).

- Microsoft acquiring everyone has led to more expensive, poorer-performing software.

- Public schools maintain a monopoly on education and look how U.S. schools are doing, especially on a per dollar basis.

Mergers in the airline business have already contributed to the problems consumers are dealing with today. Expect more of the same if this merger happens. If there's any justice left in America, the Supreme Court will block this on the basis of anti-trust laws.

There are about 10 guys who win if this merger happens (CEO's and big investors). The rest of us....not so much.

How can you possibly put Public Schools in the mix with Microsoft and Oil Companies???!
They (public school) gets it money from force not from voluntary trade.

Your arguements simply don't hold any water if you know anything about economics...
If anyone can bring oil to the market cheaper, they would...there would be untold profit in it!

If a software company could make something better than Windows and be able to support it and market it better than Microsoft, they would...think of the billions they could earn. Why haven't they???

Please don't bring your version of capitalism and economics that you learned in Public School to this forum.
